Salomon SAVERY (Amsterdam 1594 - 1678)
Etching wand engraving, after 1630, signed at lower left. After Jacques Callot. The engraving refers to the celebrations for the Feast of St. Luke, October 18, in the village of Impruneta, which Callot had the opportunity to participate in 1619. Guido RENI (Calvenzano 1575 - Bologna 1642)
This handsome map of Iceland was based on information from a Dutch navigator named Joris Carolus in about 1620. The map shows the influence of both versions of bishop Gudbrandur's previous maps, a coastline resembling the Ortelius version, and Mercator's selection and spelling of many place names and has been itself hugely influential for over 130 years. Latin text edition. The island's topography is dominated by huge mountains and volcanoes and its shoreline a rugged labyrinth of fiords. It is richly embellished with title and distance scale cartouches, compass roses, rhumb lines, a sailing ship and two sea monsters.

Incisione in rame, coloritura coeva, in ottime condizioni. 1630. Christoffel JEGHER (Anversa 1596 - 1652/53)
1630. Xilografia, firmata in basso a destra. Woodcut, signed on lower right. Magnificent work, printed on contemporary laid paper, with complete marginal line, a repaired tear on verso and horizontal signs of print, otherwise in good condition. This composition has been conceived by Rubens, master of Jegher. As a very skilled pupil, he was always in charge of the realization of woodcuts depicting the oils masterpieces that the Flemish artist meant to publish. The woodcuts realized by Jegher, which bear a very strong and excellent stroke, give the illusion of a pencil drawing. This particular work is among the best ever realized by Jegher, maybe drawn after a precise model, either a painting or a drawing, provided by Rubens himself, who also published it. Probably after a design by Rubens and made under his supervision (described under Rooses 680, p.164). T … [Click Below for Full Description]

BLAEU, Willem Janszoon.
Amsterdam, c.1630, blank verso. 380 x 495mm. A very fine impression. Brazil, orientated with north to the right. The title cartouche is of two indians, an inset map shows the area around Salvador, and vignettes copied from de Bry show a hammock, goats, a battle and cannibals cooking lunch. The plate was engraved by Jodocus Hondius Jnr, son of the Jodocus who purchased the Mercator plates. When he died in 1629 many of his plates were sold to Blaeu, much to the chagrin of the Hondius firm run by Henricus Hondius and Jan Jansson, who were forced to rush the engraving of new plates. This is a very early example of Blaeu's printing, probably a working proof: 'Septentrio' and 'Meridies' in the lateral borders are engraved with open letters; and 'Amstelodami Guilielmus Blaeuw excudit' is crudely engraved. 1630. Anet (7 copies); STCN (2 other copies). Genealogy of the seven noble houses of Antwerp and chronology of the magistrates of the city. The second part of the book lists the magistrates of the city, with most of the lists starting in the 13th or 14th century.Johannes-Baptista Christyn (1630-1690) was a Flemish lawyer, diplomat and statesman. He wrote several genealogical, historical and judicial treatises, the most famous being the Jurisprudentia heroica (1689), a judicial study on the nobility in the Spanish Netherlands.Decorated paper on the boards slightly damaged and faded, otherwise a very good untrimmed copy.

Probably after a design by Rubens and made under his supervision (described under Rooses 680, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bermuda map - Blaeu
1630. Mappa Aestivarum Insularum, alias BarmudasPublished by Willem Blaeu in Amsterdam approx. 1630. Blaeu based his work on John Speed's very accurate map of 1626-1627. It shows the island divided into tribes and lots. Below the map itself appear the names of the first proprietors and the number of shares assigned to each. A splendid cartouche shows Neptune astride the Royal Arms holding a ship. The miniature map below the cartouche shows the correct proportion of the island to the coast of the mainland. Further adorned with scale cartouches, coats of arms and compass rose with a fleur-de-lys. The map is superimposed over a map of the Atlantic with the coastlines of Britain, North America and Hispanola showing the location of Bermuda. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 40,4 x 53,1 cm. MOSCOW: 1630. [CHURCH SLAVONIC]. Ustav, sirech tserkovnoe oko. [The Order of the Church Rites]. [Moscow: Pechatnyi Dvor, 1641].Rare edition of this major work on the order of liturgy, in a Russian binding. Derived from the Typikon of the Byzantine rite, the Ustav was first published by the Pechatnyi Dvor in 1610. It presented the prescribed order of the rites of the Russian Orthodox Church. 'The book was fundamental for the life of the Russian Orthodox community in that it ensured the correctness of the liturgical activity; it also included several important additions to the rules of conduct for both believers and priests' (Pozdeeva). Printed in 1200 copies, this fourth edition became the reference work for the Old Believers' rites. The binding decoration displays composite features originating in the Moscow region. The upper board bears the stamps with the title typical of the Moscow printing press bindery, whilst the grille de St Laurent on the lower board recalls the style of the bindery of the Trinity-St Sergius Monastery. PRAETORIUS, Johann.
ADB XXVI, pp. 520-529, no. 33; Caillet 8951; Faber du Faur 764; VD17 23:741244G. First and only edition of a curious collection of material on the history of superstition by the prolific and versatile, but later unjustly overlooked author, Johann Praetorius, the partly Latinized name of Hans Schultze (1630-1680). "Praetorius had an open eye and a sharp ear for all wonder stories, witch tales, and accounts of ghosts and sorcery current among the people. He indefatigably collected all information on remarkable subjects and happenings, and was fond of popular gossip, even of the uncouth type ... [The Philologemata] deals with the superstitious belief that a finger [thumb] cut off from the hand of a hanged thief serves as a good luck charm, and with vagabonds, diving rods, etc." (Faber du Faur). The thumbs-up woodcut on the title-page therefore has a more sinister meaning than one might first think.Title-page with subtly restored fore-edge margin, some usual minor browning and pages 6-7 printed unsharp, otherwise in very good condition.

1630. FAMOUS MAP OF THE SEVENTEEN PROVINCES IN A RARE SECOND STATE ?Novus XVII Inferioris Germaniæ Provinciarvm Typvs de integro multis in locis emendatus à Guliel. Blaeu.?
Europe - Willem Blaeu, 1630
1630. FAMOUS MAP OF EUROPE 'Europa recens descripta à Guilielmo Blaeuw', copper engraving published by Willem Blaeu in 1630. Coloured by a later hand. Verso: Latin text. Size: 41 x 55,8 cm. This classic map of Europe is done in the carte-a-figures style with vignettes on three sides and with Latin text on verso. Blaeu's carte-a-figures maps were issued separately from 1617, and then used in an atlas in Blaeu's Atlantis Appendix in 1630. The upper frieze has nine bird's-eye views of Amsterdam, Prague, Constantinople, Venice, Rome, Paris, London, Toledo and Lisbon. The side borders contain the costumes of the noblemen and women of ten European nations: English, French, Dutch, Castilian Spanish, Venetians, Germans, Hungarians, Bohemians, Polish, and Ottoman Greeks. The map is embellished with sailing ships, sea monsters, bears in northern Russia, and lions in North Africa and Neptune riding a dolphin and holding his trident. A beautiful map produced at the height of the Golden Age of Dutch mapmaking. For European mapmakers their own continent contained few mysteries or secrets by the seventeenth century. However, the mythical island of Frisland still appears between Iceland and Greenland. Blaeu's carte-e-figures maps of the world and the four continents are some of his most desirable. Reduced versions of the set of five wall maps he published in 1608, each example features a border of vignettes of principal cities, as well as depictions of pairs of figures in the national dress of the kingdoms and peoples of each continent. Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638) was a prominent Dut … [Click Below for Full Description]
