APPIER-HANZELET, Jean
Finely engraved title & 133 engraved text illus. (many full-page). 4 p.l., 264 pp. 4to, cont. vellum over boards (a little warped), remains of green silk ties. Pont-à-Mousson: I. & G. Bernard, 1630. Second edition, enlarged with additional illustrations, of an important and early book on military technology and pyrotechnics. The first edition appeared in 1620 under the title Recueil de plusieurs Machines militaires. For that edition, Appier collaborated with the famous mathematician and surgeon, François Thybourel (fl. 1620), but after a dispute with his co-author about the priority of their names on the title-page, Appier presented our edition as entirely his own work. "The Pyrotechnie is an entirely new work. The plates are bold and instructive."-Ferguson, Books of Secrets, II, 3rd Supp., p. 45. The text is presented in the form of a dialogue between a general and a captain, in which the captain offers important advice stemming from practical experience. Appier instructs the reader on the transportation of ordnance, accurate aim, aquatic fireworks (see p. 253), the creation of smokeless fire, and ruses de guerre. "The beautiful engravings by Appier show the 'state of the art' of defensive and offensive machines of war, including rockets, mortars, and numerous explosive devices, as well as a wide variety of recreational fireworks."-Neville, I, p. 40. The images, designed by the author, also depict the construction of many kinds of bridges including pontoon and drawbridges, gun turrets, platforms and ladders for sieges, machines devised to destroy castle defenses, the proce … [Click Below for Full Description]

PURITANISM. HARRIS, Robert.
Printed by the Assignes of Thomas Man, etc. [i.e. John Haviland], London. 1630 - Early (possibly second) edition. First published in 1618. 12mo. pp. 26. Full plain leather (probably nineteenth century). Robert Harris, 17th century preacher, was a staunch puritan and parliamentarian. During the final decade of the 15th century, the patronage of the rectory of Hanwell, where Harris preached, passed into the hands of the Cope family. Soon the district was noted as a stronghold of Puritan influence. According to Charles Keyser, the church's historian, Samuel's Funeral "was issued in pamphlet form, and was treated as a Bible amongst the early Puritans in Banbury and the neighbourhood.". No copy of this has been preserved in the Church at Hanwell. Later Harris was turned out of Hanwell by royalist troopers who threatened to shoot him, but under the Commonwealth he rose to be Master of Trinity College, Oxford. One of the most important figures in the history of Puritanism, he is best remembered for The Way to True Happiness: 24 Sermons on the Beatitudes. This item is a very rare and important Puritan text: "Be, with Hezekiah, a good Churchman. Repair God's home, and let it never be said that our Churches lie like barns, and that Our Father lets down what Pater Noster set up." STC 12807.Short split at head of spine. The title-page has been professionally repaired at the edges. The page edges are a little chipped and rubbed throughout. Very good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
