PAPA GUIDO
excudebat Stephanus Gamonetus, 1630. Pp. (4) 595 (37). Unito a: PAPA GUIDO.  Commentaria in statutum Delphinale. Pp. 74 (6). Due parti in un volume di cm. 33,5. Marchio tipografico al frontespizio bicromo, bellissimi finalini xilografici. Graziosa legatura settecentesca in mezza pelle; dorso a 5 nervi con titoli e ricchi fregi dorati agli scomparti. Tagli rossi.

- (It is to defend the knife). A bird's eye view of Den Bsoch with Sint-Janskathedraal (Sint Johns Cathedral) near the river Dieze (the Netherlands), with in the foreground a dog and hedgehog on a book with sword. This delicate engraving originates from 'Thesauri Philo-Politici' / 'Thesaurus Philopoliticus' / 'Politisches Schatzkastleins'. This work was originally created in the period 1623-1632 and consisted of 16 parts, first published separately and then together in 2 books of 8 parts ea. Altogether it had 830 prints. Later editions were published in 1637-1638 by Paul Furst (titled 'Sciographia Cormica') and in 1678 by his widow (titled:'Sciagraphia Cosmica'). Complete editions are scarse. The primary objective was the poetry and accompanying emblems with a moralising symbolism. The city views were secondary and mainly served for decoration. There is no particular tie between the poetry and the city. The city views were mostly engraved after popular engravings at the time from the works of Guicciardini, Braun/Hogenberg, Munster and others. The Poetry consists of a aphorism or theme in German or Latin at the top, a 2 line relating poem in Latin below the image and a 4 line relating poem in German below. In the engravings there is always a foreground which illustrates the theme and a city view in the background. Etching / engraving on hand laid (verge) paper. Made by an anonymous engraver after 'Daniel Meisner'. Author: Daniel Meisner (1585-1625) was a Bohemian / German poet. Very good, given age. Small stain in lowe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Francis Quarles
1630. A compilation of Quarles' works. The overall title page with details of the publisher is missing, but there is a dedication to King Charles I which was clearly specially written for the work, which makes it likely that it was published in the 1630's (it makes no reference to Civil War). Each work has a separate title page or a large heading, and retains the dedications etc written when they were first published. The first text is 'A Feast for Worms' totalling 64 pages, which has a note for the Reader and has pages 13-36 misbound out of sequence. The second is Pentelogia, a short text covering pp 65-70. The third is Hadassa with a separate title page, preface to the Reader, introduction, dedication, and the History of Esther, running to p 147. The fourth is Job Militant with half title page, proposition, dedication and text running to p 231. The fifth is the History of Sampson with no title page but starting with 'To the Reader' and text to p 232. The sixth is Sion's Sonnets with a separate title page, note to readers and sonnets to p 369. The seventh is Sion's Elegies with a title page, note to the Reader and text through to p 431. There is an Epitaph - Her Epitaph - after the end page of the Elegies. In original full leather binding with raised bands. The binding is worn with split joints and wear to corners, edges and spine. The contents are in good clean condition and appear complete bar the initial title page and any preliminaries before the dediction to King Charles. There is some browning to page edges. He was brought up in Amsterdam, and studied law at the University of Leiden before going into partnership with his father in the 1630s. Although his father Willem had cartographic interests, having studied under the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe and having manufactured globes and instruments, his primary business was as a printer. It was under the control of Joan that the Blaeu printing press achieved lasting fame by moving towards the printing of maps and expanding to become the largest printing press in Europe in the 17th century.By the 1660s the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (or Atlas Maior as it had became known by this time) had expanded to between 9 and 12 volumes, depending on the language. In 379 he was summoned to Constantinople, where he delivered a series of brilliant orations the following year. ÒHis eloquent preaching in the Church of the Anastasis was a great influence in restoring the Nicene faith and leading to its final establishment at the Council of Constantinople in 381Ó (Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church). Indeed, St. GregoryÕs later reputation as one of the great theologians of the early Church rests chiefly on these orations which include an elaborate treatment of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. He is best known for his early maps of the New World and Europe, for re-establishing the reputation of the work of Gerard Mercator, and for his portraits of Francis Drake. He helped establish Amsterdam as the center of cartography in Europe in the 17th century. He was born in Wakken and grew up in Ghent. In his early years he established himself as an engraver, instrument maker and globe maker. In 1584 he moved to London to escape religious difficulties in Flanders. While in England, Hondius was instrumental in publicizing the work of Francis Drake, who had made a circumnavigation of the world in the late 1570s. In particular, in 1589 Hondius produced a now famous map of the bay of New Albion, where Drake briefly established a settlement on the west coast of North America. Hondius' map was based on journal and eyewitness accounts of the trip and has long fueled speculation about the precise location of Drake's landing, which has not yet been firmly established by historians. Hondius is also thought to be the artist of several well-known portraits of Drake that are now in the National Portrait Gallery in London. In 1593 he moved to Amsterdam, where he remained until the end of his life.
