MARTINI, Matthaeus
for Capar Closemann, 1630. 8vo, pp. [16] 365 [41] Roman and italic letter. A good, well-margined copy, vellum stub in early English hand, in fine contemp. English calf, border triple-ruled in blind, slightly worn at foot of spine, all edges speckled red. "price 1:4" on verso of fly, on t.p. "W.K. p. 1:4" and "Will: Kemp" in contemp. ms. Third edition of a medical treatise published in 1616 and 1625, concerning sicknesses of mesentery, or the lining between the bowels and the back wall of the abdomen, by Matthaeus Martini, a physician from Eiselben. The treatise describes causes of obstruction in this area of the body, offering dietary remedies like citrus, and concludes with practical remedies for purging the body of its illness, sometimes literally, as with Martini's recipe for vomitus provocatio. It also links the illnesses of the lower body to the mind; Martini argues that diseases of the mesentery are symptoms of melancholy, cold and dry black bile, so warm and moderately dry climates are recommended. The second part takes up more than half the volume, and considers the mesentery in terms of 'the history and management of the mental condition of hypocondriacs', melancholy. Following a poem about imbalances of the humours, which the mesentery and bowels are first affected by, Martini provides a compendium of remedies from Galen, Hippocrates, Avicenna and others, to the fruits of his own research. He concludes with an extensive index. A similar position was taken by Robert Burton, who lists the mesentery among the chief causes of hypochondriacal (or 'windy') melancholy in … [Click Below for Full Description]

DU MOULIN (Pierre);
Rarissima. Taken from "Theatrum celebrorium" by Janssonius. Very rare. Amsterdam Amsterdam Dimensioni in mm. 510 X 410

ANONIMO

Barclay, Jean
Ex officina Elzeviriana, Lugduni Batavorum [Leyde] 1630 - 12mo, 118x72 mm, contemporary full ivory vellum binding with flaps, handwritten title at spine, double blind-stamped rulers at boards, initials "I.E.W.W." and date "1633" blind-stamped and gilted at front board; p. [40], 705, [15]. Chalcographic figured title-page. Xyl. head-pieces and initials. Second Elzevirian edition in Latin of this famous work by John Barclay. Argenis is a historical allegory about the religious conflict in France under Henry III of France and Henry IV of France, and also touches on more contemporary English events, such as the Overbury scandal. The tendency is royalist, anti-aristocratic; it is told from the angle of a king who reduces the landed aristocrats' power in the interest of the "country", the interest of which is identified with that of the king. Originally published in Latin in 1621, the Argenis was translated in English and issued in 1625 in London, G. Purslowe for Henry Seile (First English edition). John Barclay (1582-1621) was a Scottish writer, satirist and neo-Latin poet. The literary effort of his closing years was his best-known work the "Argenis", a political romance, resembling in certain respects the Arcadia of Philip Sidney, and the Utopia of Thomas More. The book was completed about a fortnight before his death. Provenance: Initials "I.E.W.W." and date "1633" blind-stamped and gilted at front board. Ex libris label glued at first paste-down, dated 1719, with the coat of arms of Johann Martin von Meyenburg (1689-1743), Postmeister in Schaffausen (Switzerland). A burlesque comedy, the work is presented "as a dialogue between two characters (and Faeneste Enay) interspersed with various accounts. According to a tradition of the comic story, the two speakers form a pair constituted around a major opposition between being (Enay) and appearance (Faeneste) on which are grafted correlative oppositions: Catholic (Faeneste) against Huguenot (Enay ), courtier (Faeneste) against provincial (Enay), etc. Within this series of oppositions revolve various forms of satire: social satire of the courtier-conscious "appearance", political satire of courtly manners and intrigues of upstarts, religious satire of Catholic dogmas and practices. BLAEU, Willem (1571-1638).
Amsterdam: William Blaeu, [ca 1630]. Single sheet, float mounted and framed (16 x 21 to the neat line, full margins showing the platemark). Fine engraved map of the world surrounded by vignettes of planets, the elements, the seasons, and the seven wonders of the ancient world, all with original hand-colour in full. A LANDMARK MAP OF THE WORLD BY THE MOST CELEBRATED MAPMAKER OF THE 17TH CENTURY Using Mercator's projection and first issued in 1606, this fine map remained in active circulation, for over 50 years. It is celebrated as one of the supreme examples of the mapmaker's art and in this issue, the fourth, was published in his "Atlas" from 1630 onwards. Showing both "Beach" and New Guinea as peninsulas of the great south land Terra Australis. The most striking characteristics of Blaeu's map are the superb border decorations. Along the top are allegorical representations of the sun and moon and the five known planets, while each side has four panels illustrating the elements and the four seasons, and along the bottom are seven vignettes showing the seven wonders of the ancient world. Blaeu maps are immediately recognizable by the beauty of their ornamentation. Whereas 16th century publishers had decorated their maps with strapwork designs in black and white, Blaeu's maps were embellished with decorative swags, symbols, coats of arms, city views and large pictorial cartouches, and were handcolored in the Baroque taste.
