Francis Quarles
1630. A compilation of Quarles' works. The overall title page with details of the publisher is missing, but there is a dedication to King Charles I which was clearly specially written for the work, which makes it likely that it was published in the 1630's (it makes no reference to Civil War). Each work has a separate title page or a large heading, and retains the dedications etc written when they were first published. The first text is 'A Feast for Worms' totalling 64 pages, which has a note for the Reader and has pages 13-36 misbound out of sequence. The second is Pentelogia, a short text covering pp 65-70. The third is Hadassa with a separate title page, preface to the Reader, introduction, dedication, and the History of Esther, running to p 147. The fourth is Job Militant with half title page, proposition, dedication and text running to p 231. The fifth is the History of Sampson with no title page but starting with 'To the Reader' and text to p 232. The sixth is Sion's Sonnets with a separate title page, note to readers and sonnets to p 369. The seventh is Sion's Elegies with a title page, note to the Reader and text through to p 431. There is an Epitaph - Her Epitaph - after the end page of the Elegies. In original full leather binding with raised bands. The binding is worn with split joints and wear to corners, edges and spine. The contents are in good clean condition and appear complete bar the initial title page and any preliminaries before the dediction to King Charles. There is some browning to page edges. In about his 30th year, after a decade of study, Gregory returned home, adopted the monastic life and was later, against his will, ordained a priest and consecrated to the see of Sasima. In 379 he was summoned to Constantinople, where he delivered a series of brilliant orations the following year. ÒHis eloquent preaching in the Church of the Anastasis was a great influence in restoring the Nicene faith and leading to its final establishment at the Council of Constantinople in 381Ó (Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church). Indeed, St. GregoryÕs later reputation as one of the great theologians of the early Church rests chiefly on these orations which include an elaborate treatment of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. He is best known for his early maps of the New World and Europe, for re-establishing the reputation of the work of Gerard Mercator, and for his portraits of Francis Drake. He helped establish Amsterdam as the center of cartography in Europe in the 17th century. He was born in Wakken and grew up in Ghent. In his early years he established himself as an engraver, instrument maker and globe maker. In 1584 he moved to London to escape religious difficulties in Flanders. While in England, Hondius was instrumental in publicizing the work of Francis Drake, who had made a circumnavigation of the world in the late 1570s. In particular, in 1589 Hondius produced a now famous map of the bay of New Albion, where Drake briefly established a settlement on the west coast of North America. Hondius' map was based on journal and eyewitness accounts of the trip and has long fueled speculation about the precise location of Drake's landing, which has not yet been firmly established by historians. Hondius is also thought to be the artist of several well-known portraits of Drake that are now in the National Portrait Gallery in London. In 1593 he moved to Amsterdam, where he remained until the end of his life. America noviter delineata (North America / New World / Exploration / etc.) Issued 1630 [1661], Amsterdam by Cloppenburg, Joh. & Jansson after Hondius for Gerard Mercator. Likely engraved by P. van der Keere (see Burden). This 1661 re-issue of the 1630 Cloppenburg engraved plate was issued by Jansson for an edition of Cluverius Geographius, (perhaps undocumented).*Charming and scarce antique early to mid 17th century miniature map of the Americas. Reverse blank. Title within simple scroll cartouche lower left. Tall mast sailing ships, sea monsters, fictitious features like bogus islands of Friesland & Brasil in North Atlantic ocean and the mythical Lake Parime, rumored location of El Dorado, fabled city of Gold. Outline of both countries inaccurate and distorted. North America juts endlessly towards Alaska, but with no indication of it. The entire interior of America is essentially blank and unknown, aside from the east coast, which is also shown distorted. Incorrect mountain ranges across the mid-west, Great Lakes shown totally wrong, joined, etc. Paper evenly moderately age toned to fine mellow patina. Overall the map is clean, well preserved and very attractive. Original fold line as issued. Sheet measures c. 11" x 8". Engraved area measures c. 10" x 7".*Burden, Mapping of North America, 224. calling it "uncommon". Noting several issuances, but not this 1661 Cluverius by Jansson. Koeman, Atlantees Neerlandici, v. SELLER, John
J. Seller, London, 1630. Miniature map. Copper plate engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 4 3/4" x 5 3/4". This charming miniature map of the Kingdoms of Tesset, Darha and Segelomess covers the northwestern part of Africa includes Morocco and parts of modern day Western Sudan, Algeria and Mauritania. Depicts part of the Barbary Coast including the Canary Islands. Incredibly detailed, the map notes several important cities, towns, waterways and beautifully rendered topography. During this time, the Barbary Pirates operated in this area, despite of which Morocco managed to trade sugar, tobacco, gold and leather with France and England. The map is in good condition with minor toning, especially along the edges. John Seller (c. 1630-1697) was an English instrument maker and cartographer and in 1671 he was appointed Hydrographer to the King. Seller instigated the first English maritime atlas, in an effort to compete with the successful Dutch maps at the time. This map is a nice example of his work.
