Burggrav, Johann Ernst.
Frankfurt, Kaspar Rötel for William Fitzer, 1630. 8vo. 144, (3)-15 pp. All edges red. Unsophisticated wrappers. Second edition thus, the first to contain Ribola's appendix. This work on sympathetic magic constitutes "a curious booklet, the first edition of which appeared in 1610 or 1611. It gives an account of a lamp fed with a liquid made from human blood, which burns as long as the person lives from whom the blood is taken, and goes out at his death" (Duveen, p. 109). "Ouvrage remarquable par la bizarrerie des idées qui y sont exposées" (Rosenthal 3082). Also contains Paracelsus's "Cura morborum magnetica, qua vera Theophrasti mumia significatur", as well as the "Alexipharmacum". The separately paginated appendix is the "Tractatus de facultate metallorum germinatrice secundum hermeticos" by the Munich Benedictine monk and alchemist Petrus Ribola. - This copy lacks the blank leaf K1, as do those at the BSB Munich and in Prague. Outer edge untrimmed; light worming to lower corner; insignificant browning. A good copy; rare. VD 17, 12:657571X. Brüning 1516. Ferguson I, 131 (note). Kopp II, 367. CALLOT, Jacques [1592-1635].
c1630. Meaume's Fourth State (although our borders are wider than 3 mm.; we do not have access to Lieure). The view shows many boats on the Seine with the Louvre and Tuileries in the right background and the Tour of Nesle on the left. The Tour of Nesle, demolished in 1665, was a medieval watchtower on the left bank, guarding the upstream entrance to the city. Parisians crowd the banks. It has been suggested that the activities shown in the print were part of the celebrations welcoming King Louis XIII on his return from the siege of La Rochelle. It was probably drawn by Callot during his visit in 1629. Through his invention of a chip-resistant ground for copperplates and his skill in making repeated bitings of a single plate, the great French Baroque printmaker greatly improved the technical and the aesthetic possibilities of etching. He produced more than 1,400 finely detailed etchings, his subjects ranging from soldiers, clowns, drunkards, dwarves and beggars to court life, landscapes and religious scenes. "No one ever possessed in a higher degree the talent for grouping a large number of figures in a small space, and of representing with two or three bold strokes the expression, action and peculiar features of each individual. Freedom, variety and naïveté characterize all his pieces. His Fairs, his Miseries of War, his Sieges, his Temptation of St. Anthony and his Conversion of St. Paul are the best-known of his plates." (Encyc. Britannica, 11th Edn.) Lieure 667. Meaume 713. Russell 18. etching. 159 x 337 (platemark) (sheet: 170 x 346 mm.). laid paper. signed 'Callot fec … [Click Below for Full Description]

BIBLE
imprinted [by Felix Kingston] for the Company of Stationers, 1630. Two works in one. 24mo. 1) ff. [264] A-Y¹². 2) pp. 330, [vi]. Entirely ruled in red. Roman letter, some Italic, typeset music in Psalms. First title within typographical border, woodcut ornament of cupid with wings, woodcut printers device on verso of last, small floriated woodcut initials, woodcut printer s device of angel over a skeleton on second title, EW Collins, the Museum, Bramber on fly. Age yellowing, first title a little thumb soiled in lower outer corner, occasional mark or spot. Good copies, crisp and clean in a very unusual contemporary silver embroidered binding made entirely of silver stump work with a semée of sequins over white silk and canvas, covers with stylised floral pattern around a central flower, spine with alternate floral motifs, all edges gilt, edges and joints worn, white silk soiled. Two rare bibles, the New testament an early imprint by the printers to the University of Cambridge, in a striking embroidered binding, entirely made up of silver stump work in a decorative floral pattern, over a white silk ground. It is most unusual in that it contains no coloured silk embroidery, relying entirely on the densely worked and unusually raised silver stump work to create a strong overall floral design, which is most effective. The stump work is very well preserved, and, though the silk is soiled, it is a very decorative and must have been made for a rich patron. It is quite similar in make up and design to British library, Shelfmark C109r4, from 1630 which uses the same technique of an … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Willem Jansz], [Amsterdam]. First edition. Illustrated title page. Papered spine. 20 p. First edition of the earliest publication of eyewitness accounts of the Batavia disaster and mutiny at the shores of Australia in 1629. One of the earliest accounts of any European landing on the Australian continent. The pamphlet contains two letters written by survivors of the shipwreck of Batavia and the following bloody mutiny at western Australian coastline in 1629. These eyewitness' letters antedates the first edition of Ongeluckige Voyagie (1647, Amsterdam), the account based on Batavia's Commandeur, Francisco Pelsaert's journals, which is considered as "the first Australian book, the earliest record of any European landing on the Australian continent" and the "first published account of any voyage of Australian discovery" (Hordern House) by seventeen years, thus it can be accepted as the earliest printed document about the disaster (Stow, 1972) and one of the earliest publications of Australia. The letters - which have not been reprinted since their initial appearance (Stow, 1972) - are two of the only four eyewitness accounts which were printed and preserved in various contemporary and near-contemporary pamphlets (Dash, 2002), and they both contain new information about the affair, which is considered as "the greatest dramatic tragedy in Australian history beside which the mutiny on the Bounty is an anaemic tale" (Mutch; Drake-Brockman, 1963). The other accounts are the above mentioned Ongeluckige Voyagie and an anonymous pamphlet (Droevighe tijdinghe van de aldergouwelijckste … [Click Below for Full Description]

PRAETORIUS, Johann.
ADB XXVI, pp. 520-529, no. 33; Caillet 8951; Faber du Faur 764; VD17 23:741244G. First and only edition of a curious collection of material on the history of superstition by the prolific and versatile, but later unjustly overlooked author, Johann Praetorius, the partly Latinized name of Hans Schultze (1630-1680). "Praetorius had an open eye and a sharp ear for all wonder stories, witch tales, and accounts of ghosts and sorcery current among the people. He indefatigably collected all information on remarkable subjects and happenings, and was fond of popular gossip, even of the uncouth type . [The Philologemata] deals with the superstitious belief that a finger [thumb] cut off from the hand of a hanged thief serves as a good luck charm, and with vagabonds, diving rods, etc." (Faber du Faur). The thumbs-up woodcut on the title-page therefore has a more sinister meaning than one might first think.Title-page with subtly restored fore-edge margin, some usual minor browning and pages 6-7 printed unsharp, otherwise in very good condition.

PRAETORIUS, Johann.
Ad 1: Hardin, German Baroque writers, p. 317; VD17 23:287507Y (3 copies); cf. G.S. Williams, Ways of knowing in early modern Germany; ad. 2: VD17 23:247385M (5 copies); for Praetorius: ADB XXVI, pp. 520-529; Faber du Faur, pp. 199-200. Rare first and only edition, one of two issues published in the same year, of an astrological treatise by the prolific and versatile, but later unjustly overlooked author, Johann Praetorius, the partly Latinized name of Hans Schultze (1630-1680). "Praetorius had an open eye and a sharp ear for all wonder stories, witch tales, and accounts of ghosts and sorcery current among the people. He indefatigably collected all information on remarkable subjects and happenings, and was fond of popular gossip, even of the uncouth type" (Faber du Faur). The treatise was written during the Anglo-Dutch Wars and Praetorius makes an astrological prediction that the Dutch will be victorious over England. The book is dedicated to the States General and Williams notes that "Waibler suggests that Praetorius meant to curry favor with the Dutch Estates by offering his services in an exceedingly humble manner, not expecting any reward". As the book is bound with the arms of the States General it seems likely that Praetorius himself presented this copy to them. With library and deaccession stamps. Browned and foxed throughout, but still in good condition. Binding very good.
