Very scarce first edition of this illustrated encyclopedia of all the parts and implements of fortification, one of the few Italian standard works on the subject published in the 17th century. P. P. Floriani (1584-1638) from Macerata was an engineer employed by pope Urabnus VIII. When Floriani inspected the Valletta front he wrote that these could not be adapted to the artillery warfare prevalent at that time. Warfare was changing and artillery was increasingly being used. A second edition of this important book was published at Venice in 1654, a third one at London in 1725. - Contemporary vellum, back on three raised bands, ms. title on spine.

Rome: Giacomo Mascardi, 1630. 210 x 150 mm. Limp vellum c. 1630, title in ink on spine. Minor dampstains throughout, light toning and occasional foxing, but very good.First Edition of the First Book to Contain Images of Organisms as Viewed through the Microscope. The book?s striking full-page image of a magnified bee (p. 52), showing minute details of the antennae, legs, sting, head and tongue, ?still has the capacity to arouse the wonder of modern experts? (Freedburg, p. 189). On page 127 is a smaller illustration of a magnified grain weevil, including a detail of the tip of the insect?s snout and mandibles. These remarkable scientific images are found, oddly enough, in Francesco Stelluti?s translation of the works of the Latin poet Persius, dedicated to the powerful Cardinal Francesco Barberini in an attempt to gain the Cardinal?s patronage for the Accedemia dei Lincei. The ?Academy of Lynxes,? one of Europe?s first scientific societies, had been founded by Stelluti, Federico Cesi and Johannes Eck in 1603; Stelluti?s edition of Persius was intended for the most part as a means for advertising the Accademia?s activities. ?Whenever he possibly could, Stelluti took a word or phrase in Persius?almost any word or phrase?and used it as an excuse to refer to one or another aspect of the natural historical researches of the Linceans. The most insignificant reference in the elegies sparked long and short excursuses on the Linceans? work? (Freedburg, p. 187). An obscure reference in Persius?s first satire to what may have been the ancient town of Eretum gave Stelluti his pretext for including the bee images, since the former Eretum was now Monterotondo, seat of the Barberini country estate, and the Barberini family had adopted the bee as its emblem. Stelluti?s weevil image was likewise prompted by a mention of that insect in another of Persius?s poems.Stelluti?s bee image is similar, but not identical to, an earlier image showing magnified views of a bee, published as a broadsheet in 1625 under the title Apiarium; this broadsheet is extremely rare, with only two or three copies recorded. The Apiarium was intended to form part of a projected encyclopedia by Cesi, but this project was never realized. In 1624 Cesi had been sent a microscope by Galileo, another Lincean, and it was most likely this instrument that Cesi and Stelluti used to prepare their pioneering images of insects under magnification.         Nova Reperta.

Antwerp - Beautiful impression of the frontispiece to "Nova Reperta", ca. 1630. Johannes Stradanus or van der Straat, (1523-1605) was a Flemish artist but spent most of his life in Florence. Stradanus sent his original drawings of "Nova Reperta" ("New Inventions"), a Renaissance celebration of recent discoveries both scientific and geographical, to Antwerp where they were first engraved and published by Phillipe Galle circa 1600. This edition was republished by Galle's grandson. The frontispiece shows an array of discoveries and inventions, being welcomed by a female figure (Modernity), while a male figure turns away (representing the Old Order). Specific objects represented include the Americas, a compass, a cannon, a printing press, a clock, tools of alchemy, a Mulberry tree (used to harvest silkworms), a saddle with stirrups, and logs of the guaiacum tree, which was thought to cure Syphilis (also newly "discovered" in the New World). Light scattered foxing, minor tape residue to edges. Slight abrasion to top center. View. Uncolored engraving. Images measures 7.5" x 10.5".

        All the Workes

London: by J[ohn]. B[eale]. [and others] for James Boler,, 1630. Beeing Sixty and three in Number. Collected into one Volume by the Author: With sundry new Additions, corrected, revised, and newly Imprinted, 1630. Folio in sixes (298 × 197 mm). Bound without initial blank in mid 19th-century dark blue morocco by Bedford, spine richly gilt in compartments, raised bands, sides panelled in gilt with gilt arms in centre, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Engraved title by Thomas Cockson, surrounded by nautical instruments, vignette at top showing Taylor entertaining a passenger, another below with Taylor's portrait; numerous woodcuts in the third part of the text. The Britwell Library copy; subsequently in the library of Walter T. Shirley II, with his bookplate. A few leaves apparently supplied from another copy, a very few minor paper repairs, but an excellent copy, exceptionally large, retaining many uncut edges, larger all round than the Pforzheimer copy, itself described as very large. First edition of the collected works of the self-styled Water-Poet. "Not all the pieces here included have survived in early separate form. Neither are all of Taylor's works issued prior to the date of this collection contained in it. The selection is, nevertheless, a comprehensive one" (Pforzheimer). The choice to publish the collection was Taylor's: "an extraordinary decision for a popular rhymer who was placing himself in the company of Shakespeare, Jonson, and Daniel (a friend). It was an act of defiance and self-assertion, however, rather than triumph or celebration. Taylor had no grand patrons, and pointedly dedicated his volume to 'the world', with dispirited comments on his failure to win recognition ... Having successfully constructed a comic persona as the rhyming waterman, it was an impossible challenge to be accepted as a serious poet. His achievement was none the less impressive" (ODNB). In his verse Errata, Taylor claims that the book took four different printers to produce, although internal evidence suggests only three. The printing was probably done piecemeal because Boler did not acquire the copyright to most pieces, merely permission to include them in this collection.
