[Click Below for Full Description]

RAIGNAULD Henri
Parigi, 1629. Incisione in rame, in ottime condizioni. Rara. Rare map of Malta and a part of Sicily, based upon Matteo Perez d'Aleccio's map, which appeared in J. Badouin's rare Histoire des Chevaliers de l'Ordre de S. Jean de Jerusalem, published in Paris in 1629. Raignauld's map derives from two of the most important 16th Century maps of Malta, the maps of Antonio Lafreri (1551) and Matteo Perez d'Aleccio. D'Aleccio was an artist who was the official painter for the Order of the Knights of St. John at the time of the successful defense of Malta from Turkish attack in 1565 and was charged with illustrating the defense of the island. He painted a number of frescoes and other … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cambridge, England: Very good for the Bible's age. See full description below. The King James Version was first published in 1611, and first edition copies start at about $100K. This is one of only three first edition "Cambridge" printings (1629), published 18 years later, I've seen anywhere for sale. The other two were offered at $29K and $25K. This one was purchased from one of the two or three most reputable antique Bible dealers in the country, and this is the finest copy of a first edition Cambridge KJV that he had ever seen. Ironically, the retooled leather cover says, "Book of Common Prayer," but this may reflect the title on an earlier spine, as well as the Anglican tendency, so often pointed out by Separatists and Non-Comformists, to hold the Prayer Book in higher esteem than the Bible itself. It also reflects the first of the five sections of this volume, all under one cover: 1) Book of Common Prayer 2) Old Testament 3) Apocrypha 4) New Testament 5) Metric Psalms (the Anglican "hymnal" of the time) Please note -- The first two pages at the beginning of the Book of Common Prayer section are reinforced by thin Japanese paper, with small worn traces at the fringes. There are a few pages with some faint damp staining on the edges, without offense to the pages as a whole. The general Title Page is possibly a fine facsimile on sympathetic cotton linen paper, but it is also possibly original (as the "match" is nearly perfect, if it is a replacement). On the verso of the New Testament title page is an ancient family birth, baptism, and death register -- historic! On the w … [Click Below for Full Description]

The map is based on the first state of Smith's map, 1612, and is slightly larger and more expertly engraved. The firts state of this plate was published by Hondius. The map is, in part, famous for its depiction, upper left, of Chief Powhatan, waving his tobacco pipe, and seated, as the caption says, in state when Capt. John Smith was delivered to him prisoner. It represents not merely one of the decisive moments of the sixteenth century, but a moment whose influence is still felt all over Europe." The Council was convened in 1545 by Emperor Charles V in an effort to reconcile religious strife with Protestantism, however, dominated by the papacy, at its conclusion in 1563, the Council placed in the hands of the papacy an instrument which determined the evolution of the Roman Church for the next three centuries, culminating in the 1877 pronouncement of the dogma of papal infallibility. Sarpi, a "devoted and honoured servant of the Venetian Republic"; recognized the full force of the acts of Council, which in turn motivated him to issue this work, his "masterpiece"; it later formed the nucleus of opposition to the papacy of Pius IV.
He painted a number of frescoes and other works, … [Click Below for Full Description]

King Philip IV was seduced by the general idea of legally asserting once and for all the legitimacy of the Spanish possessions in America and financed the first book on justice, but not the second on the forms of government, which appeared in 1639. The author had been a judge in Lima since 1609 by Royal appointment. The Viceroy of Peru appointed him Governor of Huancavelica, a mining outpost of key economic importance to Spain, an office he was to fill during his eighteen years in Peru, as well as Procurator to the Supreme Council of the Indies (Real y supremo consejo de Indias). THUCYDIDES
1629. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Thomas Hobbes was an English philosopher often considered to be the founder of political philosophy of the 17th-century. He helped develop many of the modern day thoughts on society and political order, particularly 'representation' of governmental power. Hobbes also took a special interest in classical Greek philosophy, so much so, that he sought to publish a translation of Thucydides' 'History of the Peloponnesian War.' Until 1629, no English translation of the work had existed. Hobbes' was the first from a Greek manuscript. The extensive work covers a brief overview of Greek history and includes explanations as to why the Peloponnesian War began in the first place. Thucydides focus seemed to be primarily on military aspects of the war and how the war influenced social and cultural themes. [Attributes: First Edition]
