FORE-EDGE PAINTING.)
London: by Bonham Norton, and John Bill, Printers to the Kings most Excellent Majestie, 1629. Folio (328 x 220 mm) in sixes. Contemporary calf, sides with frames in gilt and blind, fleurons at corners, enclosing gilt centrepiece with initials "MB" either side, skilfully rebacked with original flat spine laid down, gilt bands and ornaments, relined, old gilt edges at head and tail, gilt removed from the fore edge to allow painting, lacks ties. Boards a little scuffed and with a few wormholes and some surface loss to upper edge of rear board and corners, the occasional blemish to contents, a good copy. With a hand-painted watercolour by John T. Beer on the fore edge. Engraved titles, 34 full-page genealogies, double-page map of Canaan woodcut initials and head- and tailpieces. Double-column, ruled in red. An attractive example of the work of the fore-edge artist John T. Beer (1826?-1900), a successful Merseyside clothier and book collector, who turned to fore-edge painting in his retirement, producing more than 200 fore-edge paintings and painted bindings between 1884 and 1900. Beer used books from his own collection and he did not gild the fore-edges, though he cleaned and fanned the pages before adding his illustration; the closed book therefore shows a slightly foreshortened version of the scene, with the correct proportions only appearing when the pages are fanned open. His collection was sold at auction by Sotheby's in November 1903. Beer has titled this painting "The Finding of Moses" on the front pastedown. The front pastedown is relined with paper at a later date and … [Click Below for Full Description]

THUCYDIDES
1629 1st English ed Thucydides Peloponnesian War Thomas Hobbes Greek Philosophy Thomas Hobbes was an English philosopher often considered to be the founder of political philosophy of the 17th-century. He helped develop many of the modern day thoughts on society and political order, particularly ‘representation’ of governmental power. Hobbes also took a special interest in classical Greek philosophy, so much so, that he sought to publish a translation of Thucydides’ ‘History of the Peloponnesian War.’ Until 1629, no English translation of the work had existed. Hobbes’ was the first from a Greek manuscript. The extensive work covers a brief overview of Greek history and includes explanations as to why the Peloponnesian War began in the first place. Thucydides focus seemed to be primarily on military aspects of the war and how the war influenced social and cultural themes. William Camden
William Camden, Remaines Concerning Britiane, 1629 4th edition, printed in London By Adam Islip for Symon Waterson. In Very Good Condition; rebacked, retaining gilt-ruled calf boards, with the newer spine divided into six compartments by five gilt bands, with a red morocco letter-piece in the second compartment from the top, and with the leaf edges red speckled. Externally the boards and spine are lightly scuffed in general, with splits forming on the newer spine, with the board corners bumped. Internally the leaves are generally clean and amply margined leaves, with some small stains and foxing, with general toning otherwise. Complete in All Respects; The volume is paginated as follows: [4], 9, 8-346. The volume collates as follows: A-Y6. The volume measures about 18.5 cm. By 14.5 cm. By 2.5 cm. Each leaf measures about 180 mm. By 140 mm. William Camden’s Remaines of a Greater Worke, Concerning Britaine was a collection of themed historical essays, conceived as a more popular companion to Britannia. This was the only book Camden wrote in English, and, contrary to his own misleading description of it in the first edition (1605) as being merely the "rude rubble and out-cast rubbish" of a greater and more serious work (i.e. Britannia), manuscript evidence clearly indicates that he planned this book early on and as a quite separate project. Remaines subsequently ran into many editions. The standard modern edition, edited by R. D. Dunn, is based on the surviving manuscript material and the three editions published in Camden's lifetime (1605, 1614, and 1623). Editions published … [Click Below for Full Description]

BETHENCOURT (Jean de) / [BERGERON, Pierre]
Paris, Michel Soly, 1629. 1629. [Click Below for Full Description]

SAUBERT, JOHANNES. - [MAGNIFICENT EMBROIDERED SILVER-THREAD BINDING - 1630]
Nürnberg, Endter, 1629. 8vo (ca. 15,8x10 cm). Truly magnificent contemporary embroidered German silver thread binding - from 1630 - of claret satin over wooden boards. The figure of Faith, with crucifix, within an oval frame to front board and the figure of Justice, with scales and sword, within an oval frame to back board. Both "frames" are richly decorated with birds, insects, and ornamentations, and both boards are sprinkled with tiny sequins. The embroidery is remarkably well preserved, is in very high relief, and is wrought predominantly in silver tread, with green, red and blue threads intertwined. Both figures are standing on green bases, and the "filling" of the frames are red. The birds are blue. The spine is divided into four panels, by three broad silver bands. Each compartment is richly decorated, again predominantly in silver thread, with red, green and blue threads intertwined, and in high relief. The four lovely, large ornaments are, from the bottom: a basket of fruit; an ornament introducing a scallop shell; fruit-composition (apple, pear, grapes); another decorative ornament. All edges gilt.

The thread of the arms of Faith on the front board, and of the most protruding parts of Justice on the back board are a bit worn, and the satin on the very edges of the boards is worn, so that the edges of the wooden boards are visible. But all in all, the binding is in splendid condition, and the embroidery is clear and in high relief. The delicate burgundy satin background is almost completely preserved, as are all the tiny sequins sprikled out over the bindin … [Click Below for Full Description]

VIÈTE, François [& VAULEZARD, J. L. (translator)].
Paris: J. Jacquin, 1629/1630. Very rare first edition of the first French translation and exposition of Viète's In artem analyticum isagoge (Tours, 1591), the earliest work on symbolic algebra, here bound with a first edition of Vaulezard's translation of Viète's Zeteticorum libri quinque (Tours, 1593), which gives examples of the application of his ‘analytic art' to problems from Diophantus' Arithmetica. The third work is a scathing criticism of a slightly later translation of the Isagoge by Antoine Vasset, a response to criticisms Vasset had made of Vaulezard's translation in his own work. “The most important of Viète‘s many works on algebra... [In artem analyticem isagoge] also introduced the use of letters both for known quantities, which were denoted by the consonants B, C, D, and so on, and for unknown quantities, which were denoted by the vowels. Furthermore, in using A to denote the unknown quantity x, Viète sometimes employed A quadratus, A cubus ... to represent x2, x3, ... This innovation, considered one of the most significant advances in the history of mathematics, prepared the way for the development of algebra” (DSB XIV 19).

Perhaps the most important part of the work is chapter 4, in which “he presents a mode of calculation carried out completely in terms of ‘species' of numbers and calls it logistice speciosa – in contrast with calculation using determinate numbers, which is logistice numerosa. Of significance for the formation of t … [Click Below for Full Description]

[s.i.]: [s.n.], Imprinted 1629 [2], 46pp. Uncut, handsomely bound by F. Bedford in nineteenth-century gilt-tooled polished tan calf, T.E.G., recently expertly rebacked to style by Aquarius of London, preserving contemporary backstrip and morocco lettering-piece, housed in custom brown morocco-backed slip-case. Marbled endpapers. Very light marking to extremities., recent bookplates of Harold Greenhill and David and Lulu Borowitz to FEP, earlier booksellers note tipped-in to recto of FFEP, small repaired hole to title-page - just clipping author's name, else a fine copy. Francis Bacon's (1561-1626) vehemently militarist appeal, composed in 1624, for Britain to initiate a naval war with Spain in order to limit Habsburg dominance of the Continent; 'Their greatnesse consisteth in their treasure, their treasure in their Indies, and their Indies (if it be well weighed) are indeed but an accession to such as are Masters of the Sea, so as this axeltree whereupon their greatnesse turneth is soone cut in two, by any that shall be stronger than they by Sea whereas wars are generally cause of poverty or consumption, on the contrary part the special nature of this warre with Spaine (if it be made by Sea) is like to be a lucrative and a restorative war'. To bolster his advocacy of aggression, Bacon exploits the past victories of the British Navy in order to both ignite patriotic fervour and make triumph seem all the more likely. He thus keenly narrates with the repelling of the 1601 Spanish invasion of Ireland, provides an account of the exploits of Drake and Hawkin in their expeditions … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Amsterdam]: NP, 1629. First edition. Hardcover. f to vg. Small octavo (7 1/4 x 6"). [2], 322, [10]pp. Contemporary full calf, with gold lettering and tooling to spine. Raised bands. Title within decorative border. Decorative head-, tailpieces, and initials. Written in Italy by Immanuel Aboab (c. 1555-1628), a Portuguese-born converso Jewish scholar, great-grandson of Isaac Aboab of Castile*, this scarce first edition of "Nomologia o Discursos Legales" is a defence of the divine origin of the oral law and the Jewish tradition. Aboab worked at this treatise for ten years, completed it in 1625, and the work was finally published posthumously by his heirs at Amsterdam, in 1629 (2d ed., ibid., 1727). "Immanuel Aboab's work on the Principles of the Law was a direct intervention in the debate over the fundamental (dis)agreement of Talmud and Scripture. Aboab understood that two issues needed to be solved if he were to 'remedy the illness' of conversos like Uriel da Costa (c. 1585-1640), a Jewish philosopher and skeptic who questioned the Catholic and Rabbinic institutions of his time. On the one hand, he had to prove the continuity of the rabbinic Chain of Tradition, on which da Costa had cast serious doubts. This was the easy part, as he knew he could draw from a rich library of texts that offered plausible reconstructions, most recently the "Book of Genealogies" by the astronomer Abraham Zacuto. In Part II of the "Nomologia," Aboab elaborated upon Zacuto's survey and outlined, in thirty chapters, el principio, y progresso de la L … [Click Below for Full Description]

BETHENCOURT (Jean de) / [BERGERON, Pierre]
Paris, Michel Soly, 1629. 1629. [Click Below for Full Description]

VIOLA ZANINI, Giuseppe
Francesco Bolzetta. FIRST EDITION. 4to. 2 parts in 1, pp. (xx) 252 (viii) 244 [253-497] (ii). Italic letter, with Roman. Separate t-p with printer’s device to each, c.100 woodcut plates of geometrical diagrams and architecture, decorated initials and headpieces. Very faint occasional foxing, t-p a bit dusty. A fine copy in half sheep over olive pasteboards, c.1700, loss to upper cover and edges, a.e.r. Spine in five compartments, raised bands, gilt title. Inscription ‘Monasterij Weingartensis 1659’ and faded library stamp to t-p, modern marginal annotation ‘vedi 313’ at 336. Excellent, clean copy of the first edition of Giuseppe Viola Zanini’s ‘Della architettura libri due’, a descendant of humanist manuals inspired by Vitruvius’s ‘De architectura’. A copy was in the library of Inigo Jones. Giuseppe Viola Zanini (c.1575-c.1631) was an Italian architect, painter, art theorist and cartographer. He spent his life in Padua first as a student of Vincenzo Dotto, a follower of Palladius, and then as architect and painter of architectural perspectives, the only example of which survives in Palazzo Cumano. Divided into two parts and probably intended to have a third, ‘Della architettura’ discusses as much the basics as the technical sophistication of architecture, blending the ‘utile’ of technical knowledge and the ‘dulce’ of anecdotes, plates and illustrative references to Venetian and Paduan buildings. A gifted writer, Zanini explains with exceptional, succinct, clarity the complexity of geometry and polygons, the rules of perspectival construction in paintings, façades and ceili … [Click Below for Full Description]

FELICIANO M. Francesco
1629. In 8vo; pp. [4], 276. Legatura coeva in piena pergamena.

Dibner, Heralds of Science 175. Riccardi I, 188-9: «Raro e ricercatissimo». Horblit 172. Wheeler Gift 96. Cultura delle macchine p. 46 e 90. Manca alla Hoover Coll. e al Cat.Vinciana..
