OLMO, Fortunato O.S.B. Printed by Evangelista Deuchino
[Venice, Evangelista Deuchino], 1629. 4to. [4]f including title within elaborate engraved border + 344p. Some ornamental woodcut initials. Boards. First edition of the Venetian Benedictine monk's vivid account of the historic secret peace meeting of Pope Alexander III and the Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa held at Venice on 24th July 1177 in the presence of the incumbent Doge Sebastiano Ziano (1172-78)and of the resulting military advantages secured for the Republic. The lower panel of the engraved title page shows the Emperor kneeling before the Pope with the Doge standing on his right in the presence of bishops. The upper border incorporates portraits of St Peter and St Mark. Venice was part of the anti-imperial Lombard league of cities that defeated Frederick Barbarossa at Legnano (1176). The Emperor thus had to recognize the supremacy of the Papacy. The imprint is the last recorded from the press of the celebrated Venetian typographer Evangelista Deuchino. A good copy; right blank margin of first 3 leaves strengthened. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

GAFFAREL (Jacques)
[Click Below for Full Description]

- Venezia, G. Gueriglio, 1629. 4to (195 x 141 mm). pp. (xvi), 344, including engraved title and 145 full-page engravings. Contemporary vellum. Second edition, the first was published in 1627. Prospero Alpini (1553-1616) was director of the Botanic Gardens at Padua (1603-1616). "The material for the 'De plantis exoticis', which was published posthumously, also derived from Alpini's travels. With Onorio Belli he carefully studied the flora of Crete. Information on plants from other areas was later incorporated into the manuscript, which was edited by his son Alpino and completed in 1614. Data concerning some of these plants were obtained by examining specimens grown from seeds sent to Alpini. A total of 145 plants, each illustrated by a woodcut (incorrect should be engraving!), formed a notable contribution to Mediterranean floristics. This is especially true of the flora of Crete, many of whose plants were described for the first time. The accuracy of Alpini's descriptions was demonstrated by A. Baldacci and P.A. Saccardo, who identified seventy-one of the eighty-five Cretan plants on which he reported" (DSB).Title page with small paper repair, some insignificant paper repair to a few leaves with no loss of text.Hunt 213; Nissen BBI, 21.

Third Edition. Hayward was imprisoned by Queen Elizabeth, 1599-1601, for publishing the present work, which he had dedicated to Essex. According to Pforzheimer, Elizabeth was apparently only dissuaded from hanging Hayward by Bacon’s comment, after reading the book, that the author was not guilty of treason but only of felony since he had stolen the better part from Tacitus. Following the accession of James I, Hayward secured a large practice in the court of arches, and in 1610 was named historiographer of the newly founded Chelsea College. STC 12997.
