(BINDINGS - MACÉ RUETTE). (ELZEVIER IMPRINT). OVID
Lvgd[uni] Batavorvm [Leyden]: Ex Officina Elzeviriana, 1629. First Elzevir Edition. This lovely set epitomizes early 17th century fine printing and fine binding. According to Dibdin, our first Elzevier printing of Ovid, with a new recension by Heinsius, was "highly treasured," especially by French collectors. Among these bibliophiles was the man who likely commissioned this binding from an innovative master craftsman who was one of the best binders in Paris. According to Esmerian, the courtier, scholar, and inaugural member of the Académie Française Henri-Louis Habert de Montmort (1600-79) began collecting Elzeviers in the 1620s and having them immediately bound by Macé Ruette (1584?1644), who had established his workshop in 1606, after an eight-year apprenticeship with Dominique Salis. Ruette served as administrator of the Guild of Booksellers, Printers, and Binders from 1629-34, and was appointed Relieur du Roi in 1629, succeeding Clovis Eve. Our binding has the "lozenge and corners" design and the filigree pointillé tooling introduced by Ruette and resurrected in the neo-gothic styles used by Thouvenin and others in the 19th century. It is the same design, employing many of the same tools and with minor variations, as lot no. 5 in volume II of the Esmerian sale at Palais Galleria, Paris, in December 1972, on a volume of Homer. The use of marbled paper for endpapers, as seen here, was another Ruette innovation; while he may not have invented the process, as originally claimed by La Caille, he was one of the first in France to employ it. Binet Estienne
Paris: 1629. Rare édition ancienne. Estienne Binet. [Click Below for Full Description]

Camden, William (Philipot, John, ed.)
London: Printed by A. I. for Symon Waterson, 1629. [4], 346pp. With woodcut initials and ornaments. Title dusty and softened, edges a bit frayed, varying degrees of age browning, occasional marginal spotting, light water stain to outer blank edge of one gathering, title, first and last leaves adhering to free endpapers. Contemporary polished calf, rebacked, triple blind ruled, a.e.r. Boards and extremities rubbed. 19th-century bookplate and autograph of Ernest Horwood to front pastedown; earlier autograph of John Horwood and price to fep; the odd early annotation. A fourth edition of this popular antiquarian work - the only one which William Camden (1551-1623) wrote in English. Long believed to be a collection of sundry material he had accumulated in the production of his great work, 'Britannia', it was instead intended as a separate work from the start - cheaper, aimed at a more popular readership, and with a stronger patriotic flavour (Parry, 'The Trophies of Time', p.45). "If the Remaines is an ungainly, seemingly shapeless collection, it is also frequently witty and wise, and richly varied" (Oxford DNB). Chapters discuss subjects including women's Christian names, the history of the English language and English money, and the etymology of the most common English surnames. Posthumous editions, of which the present one was the first, included additional material not strictly authored by Camden. ESTC S107502. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Dibner, Heralds of Science 175. Riccardi I, 188-9: "Raro e ricercatissimo". Horblit 172. Wheeler Gift 96. Cultura delle macchine p. 46 e 90. Manca alla Hoover Coll. e al Cat.Vinciana..

Pemble, William (1592?-1623
Printed by R. Young for John Bartlet, at the signe of the gilt, 1629. First Edition. Hardcover. 8vo. [8], 165 pp. including full-page woodcut plate bound as frontispiece (intended to be placed between pp. 50/51). COLLATION: A-Y4, without the final blank leaf, otherwise COMPLETE. Provenance: blindstamps of the Theological Institute Connecticut (now known as the Hartford Seminary) with ink-stamp. NB: in 1976 a collection of more than 200,000 books from the Hartford Seminary Library were sold to Emory University, including this one --> deaccessioned from Pitts Theology Library. Attractive recent half calf antique, marbled boards, five raised bands on spine, compartments gilt, red morocco label in the second. Very good. ¶ First Edition of this highly curious Elizabethan theological work, illustrated with a strange and wonderful woodcut of the "Vision of the Golden Candlestick" (Zech. 4). Rare on the market: this is the only copy known to us in private ownership; the last copy on the market was defective (sale at Sotheby's London on May 6, 1974, lot 73 - to Maggs). ¶ This interpretation of Zechariah (I-IX) is perhaps Pemble's final work: "He died in the flower of his age, as he was making his lectures on the prophecy of Zechariah (finishing but nine chapters of fourteen)... of a burning fever" (SOURCE: Fuller, History of the Worthies of England, vol. 3, p. 258). Published posthumously, as were all Pemble's works, through the offices of former tutor Richard Capel, who edited this work and signed the preface. BARCLAY, John
London: Felix Kyngston for Richard Meighen and Henry Seile, 1629. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. John Barclay was an early 17th-century Scottish writer and satirist most known for his work 'Argenis', a political romance. This novel has been compared in many aspects to Philip Sidney's 'Arcadia' and Thomas More's 'Utopia'. It was the final work Barclay finished before his death. 'Argenis' is an historical allegory that tells the story of the French wars on religion under Kings Henry III and IV and English controversies such as the Overbury murder trial. This 1629 edition was a variant of the 1628 with the only change being the imprint date. It features 23 illustrations by Claude Melland and Leonard Gaultier which were used in the original 1623 French edition.

Corners slightly worn, a little marginal worming, one or two corners torn away and replaced, the odd marginal repair; occasional light soiling or staining, scattered marginalia in pencil and in ink; a very good copy. Wood-engraved title-page, woodcut portrait of the author, and 108 full page woodcuts by Switzer, mostly after Clusius and Lobel, illustrating plants and including 6 garden plans; decorated printers' woodcut devices to chapter openings. First edition of the first work published on English gardening, with quire A in the first setting with line 4 of the heading on A1r ending "amend". The book with its wittily punning title (Paradisi in sole Paradisus Terrestris meaning "Park-in-sun's Earthly Paradise") is dedicated to Queen Henrietta Maria, for which Charles I gave Parkinson the title of botanicus regius primarius. It contains descriptions of almost 1,000 plants, with many of the entries giving evidence of cross-breeding and careful selection. Henrey I, 282; Hunt 215; Nissen 1489; Plesch 356; Rohde, Old English Herbals, pp. 142-51; STC 19300. [Attributes: First Edition]

Binet Estienne
Paris: 1629. Rare édition ancienne. Estienne Binet. [Click Below for Full Description]

Jacques CALLOT (Nancy 1592 - 1635)
Incisione in rame, in ottime condizioni. Rara. Rare map of Malta and a part of Sicily, based upon Matteo Perez d'Aleccio's map, which appeared in J. Badouin's rare Histoire des Chevaliers de l'Ordre de S. Jean de Jerusalem, published in Paris in 1629. Raignauld's map derives from two of the most important 16th Century maps of Malta, the maps of Antonio Lafreri (1551) and Matteo Perez d'Aleccio. D'Aleccio was an artist who was the official painter for the Order of the Knights of St. John at the time of the successful defense of Malta from Turkish attack in 1565 and was charged with illustrating the defense of the island. He painted a number of frescoes and other works, … [Click Below for Full Description]
