Fabre, Pierre Jean
Raimond Colomiez, Toulouse, 1629. Octavo (17,2 x 11,2 cm). Rare treatise on the plague. Modern vellum binding in old style. In good condition. [Click Below for Full Description]

Cambridge, England: 1629. Very good for the Bible's age. See full description below. The King James Version was first published in 1611, and first edition copies start at about $100K. This is one of only three first edition "Cambridge" printings (1629, published 18 years later) that I've seen anywhere for sale. The other two were offered at $29K and $25K. This one was purchased from one of the two or three most reputable antique Bible dealers in the country, and this is the finest copy of a first edition Cambridge KJV that he had ever seen. Ironically, the retooled leather cover says, "Book of Common Prayer," but this may reflect the title on an earlier spine, as well as the Anglican tendency, so often pointed out by Separatists and Non-Conformists, to hold the Prayer Book in higher esteem than the Bible itself. It also reflects the first of the five sections of this volume, all under one cover: 1) Book of Common Prayer 2) Old Testament 3) Apocrypha 4) New Testament 5) Metric Psalms (the Anglican "hymnal" of the time) Please note -- The first two pages at the beginning of the Book of Common Prayer section are reinforced by thin Japanese paper, with small worn traces at the fringes. There are a few pages with some faint damp staining on the edges, without offense to the pages as a whole. The general Title Page is possibly a fine facsimile on sympathetic cotton linen paper, but it is also possibly original (as the "match" is nearly perfect, if it is a replacement). On the verso of the New Testament title page is an ancient family birth, baptism, and death register -- historic … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hofmann Johann, 1629-1698
Hofmann Johann, 1629-1698.
[Click Below for Full Description]

Sir Francis Bacon
London: William Washington, 1629. The Two Bookes of Sir Francis Bacon of the Proficience and Advancement of Learning, Divine and Humane. To the King. by Francis Bacon Second Edition Printed for William Washington, 1629. (True first edition printed in 1605 and will run you about $10,000+)Wonderful early copy of an important work by Elizabethan/Jacobean scholar Francis Bacon, First Viscount St Alban, a contemporary of Queen Elizabeth I, King James I (of King James Bible fame), William Shakespeare (i.e. Edward de Vere, the 17th Early of Oxford), Sir Edmund Spenser, William Camden, etc. For a time Bacon was erroneously believed to be William Shakespeare by some fringe scholars who doubted the man from Stratford. Since 1920, J. Thomas Looney proved Bacon was not Shakespeare but may have been Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford in "Shakespeare Identified".The first edition was printed in 1605, dedicated to King James I (of King James Bible fame) concerning the importance and not only the break-down of fields of scholarship in education but other aspects of activities such as sports, namely tennis which he claims "So that as tennis is a game of no use in itself, but of great use in respect it maketh a quick eye and a body ready to put itself into all postures", somewhat similar to John Locke's Some Thoughts Concerning Education which was addressed to a friend's son. King James' son Charles was five years old at the time of the first edition, and King James, for all his faults, was a highly learned man and possibly wanted a top-rate education for his son who would become King … [Click Below for Full Description]

Item #28056 "The Council of Trent, the turning-point in the Counter-Reformation, created the modern Roman Catholic church. It represents not merely one of the decisive moments of the sixteenth century, but a moment whose influence is still felt all over Europe." The Council was convened in 1545 by Emperor Charles V in an effort to reconcile religious strife with Protestantism, however, dominated by the papacy, at its conclusion in 1563, the Council placed in the hands of the papacy an instrument which determined the evolution of the Roman Church for the next three centuries, culminating in the 1877 pronouncement of the dogma of papal infallibility. Sarpi, a "devoted and honoured servant of the Venetian Republic"; recognized the full force of the acts of Council, which in turn motivated him to issue this work, his "masterpiece"; it later formed the nucleus of opposition to the papacy of Pius IV.
