Perea, Pedro de.
Impresso en la Ciudad de los Reyes [i.e., Lima]: Por Geronymo de Contreras Small 4to (20 cm; 7.75"). [24] ff. 259, [1] pp., [18] ff.. 1629 Perea (ca. 1567–1630), an Augustinian who served as bishop of Arequipa from 1617 until his death, was a defender of the native population of his bishopric against the abuses of local officials and encomienda holders. Here he is the defender of Mary and the Church doctrine that she had been conceived free of original sin. Further he writes, "y no poderse definir en la Iglesia la opinion contraria." He adds, "Van añadidos en esta copia, los motivos, y principios, assi de nuestra fè, como de teologia, y algunas consideraciones cerca de la fiesta, en que funda el obispo su opinion, para poder mas facilmente satisfacer a las objeciones que pusieren a este nuevo pensamiento, los poco afectos a esta fiesta, que no se pusieron en dicha carta, respeto de no cansar a su Magestad alargandola." Interestingly, the bishop had sent copies of the manuscript of this work to several prominent clerics in Spain to read and comment on, and one of them has provided an approbation to print it. Provenance: Marca de fuego on the upper edges of a Franciscan monastery. We know of no book or database for identifying which monastery used which ones, in Peru. Searches of NUC and WorldCat locate only two copies in U.S. libraries. Searches of COPAC, CCPB, and the OPAC of the Spanish National Library locate no copies, and a search of KVK finds only one copy. Willem BLAEU (1571-1638). Amsterdam, 1640. Copper engraving with original outline colour (Very Good, repaired tears in margins, a little age toned, soft vertical folds in the middle), 46 x 56.5 cm (18.1 x 22.2 inches).
- Highly decorative originally coloured map shows west-up oriented Brazil with names of the coast towns. The in-set map shows Baya de todos os Sanctos (Salvador). The scenes in the interior of the land depict natives, including cannibals, and animals. The map was originally engraved by Jodocus Hondicus. In 1629 Hondius' plate was bought by Blaeu and revised for a new edition of his atlas. The Blaeu Family: The Leading Cartographers of the 17th Century Willem Jansz Blaeu (1571-1638) was, more than any other figure, responsible for the ascension of Dutch cartography to a globally dominant position. Blaeu, originally from Alkmaar, north of Amsterdam, got his start while serving as an apprentice to the legendary Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe at his observatory of Uranienborg, from 1594 to 1596. Upon Willem’s return to the Netherlands, he started a business making charts, globes and nautical instruments. His timing was impeccable, as the Dutch economy, based on maritime trade, was booming and there was an insatiable demand for high quality sea charts and nautical kit. Notably, in 1596, the Dutch made their first voyage to the East Indies, which led the establishment of the Dutch East India Company in 1602. The VOC would be one of Blaeu’s anchor clients and in 1633 he was appointed the Company’s official hydrographer. Blaeu’s sea atlas of European waters, Het Licht der Zee-vaert (1608) was revolutionary, being the first broadly accurate maritime atlas. He went on to create magnificent wall maps, large-format charts and eventually terrestrial atlases, all decor … [Click Below for Full Description]

PEMBLE, WILLIAM
Oxford, John Lichfield, for Edward Forrest, 1629. (8) 248 (8) p. Rebound Leather with ribbed back and richly decorated with stamps, 4° (William Pemble c.1592-1623, was a puritan divine, born as a son of a clergyman. His father was poor, and his education was provided for by John Barker. After his graduation he removed to Magdalen Hall, where he became reader and tutor. He proceeded M.A. on 9 June 1618, took orders, and was made divinity reader of Magdalen Hall, a post which he filled with great distinction, being an able exponent of Calvinism, and famous as a preacher. He was loyal to the Anglican church, though anxious that the terms of conformity should be made easier to his party. His aquirements in various branches of learning were very remarkable. It would seem that his labours and studies exhausted his strenght and shortened his days. Pemble's works were all posthumous, edited and published by his friends. (NEGRI CIRIACO Vincenzo )
s. e. 1629 In 8, pp. 10 + 88) + 128 + (16). Cart. coeva. Fresco esemplare. Quazza, Mantova..p. 297. Vinciana, 824. Nessun es. in ICCU. ITA

[SCOTTISH IMPRINT]. [Proclamation:]
Printed by the Heirs of Thomas Finlason). First edition.. A few slight smudges and stains in the text; nice copy, with wide margins.. STC 21987; Clough 1629. Small folio, modern black buckram, 22 pages. Decorated initials and borders. A proclamation, addressed to the Scots, of dual importance: the first, in modern parlance, a tax code, spelling out the justification for the collection, who is to be taxed and how and when it is to be collected. And the second, and perhaps most important purpose, is the suggestion by the King that England and Scotland share one church.

PALISSY, Bernard de.
First edition, "extremely rare and a book of great importance in the history of chemistry and science in generally... The tenth treatise contains an exposition of Palissy's famous dicosveries in the field of enamels and the ceramic arts" (Duveen). <br/><br/> ❧Norman 1629; Freilich 419 (same copy); Honeyman 2393; (both copies in new bindings); <i>En français dans le texte</i> 72.<br/><br/> "A book of great importance in the history of chemistry, hydrology, geology, and agriculture. Palissy (ca.1509-1589), who is best known for his discovery of the secret of enameling pottery, was far in advance of his time in scientific ideas. 'Palissy shines as a close and accurate observer of natural objects, a man of eminent common sense, and an original and laborious experimenter' (Partington). Toward the end of his life he described his work in the present book, which probably incorporates the lectures he gave in Paris about 1575. It is written in dialogue form between 'Theory' and 'Practice,' and it is always Practice that instructs Theory. Divided into eleven chapters, the book covers metals, alchemy, medicine, salts, precious stones, glass, pottery and ceramics, agriculture, fertilizers, etc. The first edition is an extremely rare book. Ferguson acquired his copy, now in Glasgow University, after many years of search, and wrote on the flyleaf: 'At last, after long, long waiting and watching.' It is one of the very few books in Duveen's collection of which he reproduced the title page in his <i>Bibliotheca Alchemica et Chemica</i>." Herbert #424, 1629 Cambridge First Folio, 12"x 8.5" x 2.75",fine binding, Very Good,  Cambridge had begun to print the Bible in the Geneva Version as early as the year 1588 under the charter granted to the University by King Henry VIII in 1534. That charter was the center of many violent attacks, but under it Cambridge printing became so firmly established as to withstand the jealousy of the medieval London stationers and the dangers inseparable from the changing political and religious views of successive sovereigns. The issue of the Authorized Version of the Holy Bible in 1611 was not immediately followed by the printing of this famous Version at Cambridge. For awhile Barker, the printer to the King, was responsible for every copy printed, and his first folio edition of 1611 was looked upon as the only available standard of the text as it came from the Translators. But this first folio of 1611 was known to contain many serious misprints, some of which were corrected in the second folio edition of the same year; and in this second folio a number of fresh errors occurred. It became quite obvious as time went on that if the production of Bibles were left to a printer uncontrolled by any learned body, however excellent such printer might be from the purely technical point of view, the risk of degrading the work of the Translators would be very great. At Cambridge, steps were taken to collate the various issues and, with the aid of scholars of the University, some of whom had probably taken part in the actual work of the 1611 translation, to set up a new and authoritative stan … [Click Below for Full Description]
