MASCARDI Agostino
Bellissimo frontespizio allegorico inciso in rame.

Incisione in rame, bella coloritura coeva. Magnifico esemplare." BRANCA Giovanni

Willem Janszoon BLAEU (Uitgeest 1571 - Amsterdam 1638)
The map is based on the first state of Smith's map, 1612, and is slightly larger and more expertly engraved. The firts state of this plate was published by Hondius. In 1629 the Hondius plate was purchased by Blaeu who deleted Hondius' name and added his own to the imprint, constituting the second state. The map is, in part, famous for its depiction, upper left, of Chief Powhatan, waving his tobacco pipe, and seated, as the caption says, in state when Capt. John Smith was delivered to him prisoner. Anon. Augsburg, 2. Hälfte des 17. Jhrs. (?). Kupferstich, Blatt: 14,4 x 28 cm; Leichte Faltspuren, hinterlegte Risse im weissen Rand links, verso leichte Montagespuren, ansonsten gut erhalten.
[Click Below for Full Description]

London, Humphrey Lownes, for I. Bartlet, 1629. (12, 27) 262 (8) p. Rebound half Leather with ribbed back and decorated with stamps, 4° (some pages are fixed at the lower margins because of wormholes, at some places affecting the text. William Pemble c.1592-1623, was a puritan divine, born as a son of a clergyman. His father was poor, and his education was provided for by John Barker. After his graduation he removed to Magdalen Hall, where he became reader and tutor. He proceeded M.A. on 9 June 1618, took orders, and was made divinity reader of Magdalen Hall, a post which he filled with great distinction, being an able exponent of Calvinism, and famous as a preacher. He was loyal to the Anglican church, though anxious that the terms of conformity should be made easier to his party. His aquirements in various branches of learning were very remarkable. It would seem that his labours and studies exhausted his strenght and shortened his days. Pemble's works were all posthumous, edited and published by his friends.) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

CABEO, Niccolo.
- Engraved title & several engravings & numerous woodcuts in the text. 8 p.l., 412, [12] pp. Folio, cont. half-sheep & marbled boards (minor worming towards end), spine gilt, black leather lettering piece on spine. Ferrara: F. Succius, 1629. First edition, Jesuit issue, and a very fine copy. "Perhaps the most significant discovery of the century following Gilbert was that of electrical repulsion. This effect seems first to have been noticed incidentally by Cabeus, who, in his Philosophia Magnetica (1629), describes how filings attracted by excited amber sometimes recoiled to a distance of several inches after making contact."–Wolf, A History of Science, Technology, and Philosophy, I, p. 303. Cabeo also relates his many experiments on the possibility of telegraphic communication by means of magnetized needles and gives the first picture of the sympathetic telegraph, an imaginary magnetic telegraph which sometimes appeared in early electrical literature, fancifully prefiguring the actual telegraph. It was supposed to operate by synchronous activation of two instruments with alphabetic dials whose needles had been magnetized by the same magnet. Cabeo (1586-1650), taught theology and mathematics in Parma for many years until he settled in Genoa where he taught mathematics. Handsome and large copy. There are three issues (no priority) of this book: the first issue has a royal coat-of-arms at the head of the title; the second issue has the coat-of-arms replaced by the Jesuit emblem; and the third was produced for export to Germany and has an added printed title with a Cologn … [Click Below for Full Description]

Frederick DE WIT (1629/1630 – 1706) Amsterdam 1671. Copper engraving coloured in outline (Very Good, slightly age-toned in margins, small loss of paper in the upper white margin, small repaired tear in the middle fold), 50.5 x 60 cm (19.9 x 23.6 inches).
- Rare road map shows the routes for travellers and merchants from the north of Italy to Bohemia, the Netherlands, and east France, across Germany and Switzerland. It embraces the area of the Alps, north Italy, Tyrol, Bavaria and south Germany, and parts of Slovenia and Istria. The key in the upper margin lists the distances. The map was published by a Dutch cartographer Frederick de Wit (1629/1630 – 1706), but made on comission by merchants of Bregenz. The city, known as a major trading center since the times of antiquity, is shown here in the center of the map. The unusual orientation of the map is intentional in order to fit in all the routes between the north of Italy and the Netherlands. This map is very rare on the market. It was probably published seperately and sometimes included in composite atlases (atlas factices).

[24] ff. 259, [1] pp., [18] ff.. 1629 Perea (ca. 1567–1630), an Augustinian who served as bishop of Arequipa from 1617 until his death, was a defender of the native population of his bishopric against the abuses of local officials and encomienda holders. Here he is the defender of Mary and the Church doctrine that she had been conceived free of original sin. Interestingly, the bishop had sent copies of the manuscript of this work to several prominent clerics in Spain to read and comment on, and one of them has provided an approbation to print it. Interestingly, the bishop had sent copies of the manuscript of this work to several prominent clerics in Spain to read and comment on, and one of them has provided an approbation to print it. Provenance: Marca de fuego on the upper edges of a Franciscan monastery. We know of no book or database for identifying which monastery used which ones, in Peru. Searches of NUC and WorldCat locate only two copies in U.S. libraries. Searches of COPAC, CCPB, and the OPAC of the Spanish National Library locate no copies, and a search of KVK finds only one copy. Willem BLAEU (1571-1638). Amsterdam, 1640. Copper engraving with original outline colour (Very Good, repaired tears in margins, a little age toned, soft vertical folds in the middle), 46 x 56.5 cm (18.1 x 22.2 inches).
- Highly decorative originally coloured map shows west-up oriented Brazil with names of the coast towns. The in-set map shows Baya de todos os Sanctos (Salvador). The scenes in the interior of the land depict natives, including cannibals, and animals. The map was originally engraved by Jodocus Hondicus. In 1629 Hondius' plate was bought by Blaeu and revised for a new edition of his atlas. The Blaeu Family: The Leading Cartographers of the 17th Century Willem Jansz Blaeu (1571-1638) was, more than any other figure, responsible for the ascension of Dutch cartography to a globally dominant position. Blaeu, originally from Alkmaar, north of Amsterdam, got his start while serving as an apprentice to the legendary Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe at his observatory of Uranienborg, from 1594 to 1596. Upon Willem’s return to the Netherlands, he started a business making charts, globes and nautical instruments. His timing was impeccable, as the Dutch economy, based on maritime trade, was booming and there was an insatiable demand for high quality sea charts and nautical kit. Notably, in 1596, the Dutch made their first voyage to the East Indies, which led the establishment of the Dutch East India Company in 1602. The VOC would be one of Blaeu’s anchor clients and in 1633 he was appointed the Company’s official hydrographer. Blaeu’s sea atlas of European waters, Het Licht der Zee-vaert (1608) was revolutionary, being the first broadly accurate maritime atlas. He went on to create magnificent wall maps, large-format charts and eventually terrestrial atlases, all decor … [Click Below for Full Description]

PEMBLE, WILLIAM
Oxford, John Lichfield, for Edward Forrest, 1629. (8) 248 (8) p. Rebound Leather with ribbed back and richly decorated with stamps, 4° (William Pemble c.1592-1623, was a puritan divine, born as a son of a clergyman. Pemble's works were all posthumous, edited and published by his friends.
