BACON, Francis.
London: Imprinted 1629. Small quarto (183 × 134 mm). Early twentieth-century dark blue morocco for W.H. Smith, title gilt to spine, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with foliate tools, double gilt fillet panel to the boards, single rule to turn-ins. Title page slightly soiled, small snuff-holes to B3 and B4 costing part of a couple of letters, but overall very good. First edition, uncommon, just a handful of copies at auction in the last 30 years. Written in 1624, this essay is dedicated to Charles I, as prince of Wales ("Your Maiestie hath an Imperiall name; It was a Charles that brought the Empire first into France; A Charles that brought it first into Spaine; Why should not Great Brittaine have his turne?"), and is a plea for Britain to mount a naval challenge to Spain's European hegemony: "For money no doubt is the principall part of the greatnesse of Spaine but in this part of all others is most to be considered, the ticklish and brittle State of the greatnesse of Spain. Their greatnesse consisteth in their treasure, their treasure in their Indies, and their Indies (if it be well weighed) are indeed but an accession to such as are Masters of the Sea, so as this axeltree whereupon their greatnesse turneth is soone cut in two, by any that shall be stronger than they by Sea whereas wars are generally cause of poverty or consumption, on the contrary part the special nature of this warre with Spaine (if it be made by Sea) is like to be a lucrative and a restorative war". To this end it contains accounts of Drake's and Hawkins's various expeditions against the Spanis … [Click Below for Full Description]

Imprinted [at Eliot?s Court Press] for Hen: Seile, and are to be sold at the Tigres Head in Paules Churchyard,, London, 1629. Folio: [34], 536 [i.e. 535], [13] pp. Collation: A4, a-c4, B-Z4, Aa-Zz4, Aaa-Yyy4, Zzz6 (the final leaf is blank and present). With an added engraved title page and five engraved plates, three of which are folding. Hobbes? Thucydides. The First Edition in a Contemporary Binding Hobbes published his translation in 1629, when he was in his early forties. Yet he tells us in the introduction that the translation, once completed ?lay long by? him, indicating that it had been completed much earlier.?Hobbes was interested in Thucydides less for his style than his subject matter. Nor did he take up the study and translation of the Greek historian simply with a scholar?s antiquarian interest, but with the humanist desire to learn and pass on the lessons of history to his contemporaries. He is not shy of speaking of the utility of history. He talks of Thucydides? writings ?as having in them profitable instruction for Noblemen, and such as may come to have the managing of great and weighty actions.? It is in the history of Thucydides that the purposes of history are most finely embodied: ?For the principall and proper worke of History, being to instruct, and enable men, by the knowledge of Actions past, to beare themselves prudently in the present, and providently towards the Future, there is not extant any other (merely humane) that doth more fully, and naturally performe it, then this of my Author.???Hobbes had very definite ideas about the conclusions to be … [Click Below for Full Description]

After Bartholomeus van der Helst (circa 1613 - 1670) ?
Pencil and white chalk on blue paper (soft folds and small tear in the margins, old repaired tear in the lower part of the image, verso another portriat and traces of white paper and glue in the margins, otherwise in a good condition), 38 x 29 cm (14.9 x 11.4 inches). - [18th century]. A hand-drawnd portrait shows the astronomer, physicist, probabilist and horologist Christiaan Huygens (1629 –1695), with a globe in the back. The portrait is not signed, but was based on a draft by a Dutch portrait painter Bartholomeus van der Helst, according to a 18th or 19th century hand-written note at the bottom right. A contemporary of Rembrandt Van der Helst became the most popular painter of portraits in Amsterdam. We were not able to locate a portrait of Huygens by van der Helst, but the style of the portrait matches the manner of his work. We could also not trace any engraving that matches the appearance of the present work. Perhaps it is based on a painting or drawing that is now lost.

Engraved illustrated title-page. 59 engravings, of portrait heads of rulers of Bohemia. Browning, engraved title-page loosening with repair in bottom outer corner (blank), repair to blank margins of last leaf of text. Bound in floral paper boards, slightly discoloured, touch of wear to corners, wear to top joint. Illustrated history, printed in Prague, of the dukes etc. of Bohemia, giving portrait, short narrative and verse eulogy of 59 rulers, the first, the 7th-century forefather Czechius, the last, Ferdinand III (crowned king 1627). The work was part of a Catholic and Habsburg re-education project following the defeat of Protestant Czechs at the battle of the White Mountain, and the author (1595-1639), a Jesuit professor in Prague of Italian origin, omits the vanquished Frederick, Elector Palatine (the 'Winter King'). He writes, in his introduction, of how, with the restitution of Catholic religion by Ferdinand II, "patriotic things are to be poured into the minds of young Bohemians by all means, from knowing which they might understand through what forces, and with what arts the Bohemian state had once departed and now been restored". The work was reprinted with a different title under the name of Michael Franz Ferdinand von Althann in 1673. Illustrations of rulers before 1539 are based on those of Kuthen's Chronicle (cf. Voit). DANTE ALIGHIERI.
Venezia, appresso Nicolo Misserini, 1629. In-24ø; 3 cc. [Click Below for Full Description]

SALLUSTIUS CRISPUS, Gaius.
Bremen, (B. de Villiers), 1629. 4to. Illustrierter Kupfertitel (G. Muntinck sculp.), 5 Bl., 619 (recte 561) S., 13 Bl. Pergament d. - VD17 23:236548M; Faber du Faur 177; Seebass N.F. 557; Schweiger II, 893. - Leicht gebräunt u. vereinzet etwas fleckig. [BIBLE - N.T., Greek].
Sedan, Ex Typographia & Typis Novissimis Joannis Jannoni, 1628 [colophon dated 1629]. 32mo in eights (80 x 45 mm). Early 19th-century full crushed morocco by J. Levett of Cambridge (bookseller's label inside front cover, ornamented in gilt, inner dentelles gilt, all edges gilt, functioning silver clasps; pp. 571, [1, colophon]; only slightest rubbing to extremities, light offseting from pins of clasps to initial and final leaves, a few minute wormholes, not easy to detect, very light toning; a very good copy of a great rarity, neat ownership inscription from the date of binding to head of title. 'The smallest Greek Testament ever printed, with the exception of Pickering's miniature edition of 1828' (Darlow and Moule) in a handsome nineteenth century Cambridge sombre binding. Jean Jannon's astonishing book production, with a minute Greek type cut by him recently ('typis novissimis') is textually based of the Elzevier edition of 1624. Jannon had used this Greek type only once before, in his 1627 works of Horace. Printed in the independent (up to 1651) Protestant Principality of Sedan in the Ardennes, close to the modern French border with Belgium, this NT is a rather sensational achievement of French typography and Protestant book production. In 1610 the Parisian master printer Robert III Estienne recommended the printer, librarian and typecutter Jean Jannon to the Prince of Sedan as a talented and Protestant man of the book. Sedan developed into an academy of Protestant erudition with an impressive collection of printed books, manustcripts and works of art. Jeannon began to … [Click Below for Full Description]
