De Bry, Theodor
De Bry, Theodor, 1629. Very good condition. Copper engraved plate from Theodor De Bry's "Grand Voyages" printed from 1590-1634. Latin versions were printed from 1609-1629. The engraving depicts Native Americans, perhaps in Central America (due to coconut trees), feasting, dancing and playing, as their chief reclines at the right, a group of young children cavorts in the foreground, and Dutch explorers at the left observe the scene. De Bry [1528-1598] was a Flemish engraver, designer, printmaker and publisher. He and his sons published literature on New World exploration, often written as first hand accounts, and illustrated with De Bry's engravings. Many Europeans based their impressions of the 'New World' and its people from these early illustrations. A good strong impression. Grand and Petit Voyages as a set on OCLC 43624921. Engraving 8 1/4 x 6 3/4" on sheet 8 3/4 x 11 3/4". Text in Latin, printed on one side only.

Prima traduzione italiana. Raro e ricercato. Cfr. Piantanida, 26; Graesse, V, 59; non in Bozza e Brunet. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Bible in English ].
Cambridge: Printed by Tho: and John Buck, printers to the University of Cambridge [1629]. Cambridge began to print the Bible in the Geneva version in 1558 under a charter granted by Henry VIII in 1534. The Cambridge Geneva Bible appeared in 1691. Meanwhile in London, Christopher Barker had acquired a virtual monopoly in Bible printing by virtue of his patent as Royal printer, granted in 1577. In seeking to break that monopoly, Cambridge University Press and the Bucks insisted that they had the means to produce far better edited editions of the Bible in their university town. In 1628, Charles I ratified Henry VIII's charter, and this Bible was the first publication produced after that act. It was, indeed, significantly more accurate than the Barker editions of the King James Bible, and it began a Cambridge tradition of care for the text. "Another motive probably contributed to the quality of the Bible issued by Thomas and John Buck, printers to the University of Cambridge. Cambridge was making a claim to printing and editorial quality beyond anything their London rivals could produce. Part of this implicit claim was embodied in its conspicuously modern appearance. By my count (counts of this sort always have an element of roughness), they introduced 221 readings, of which 199 became standard. In terms of frequency, this is roughly one new reading every five chapters. They also confirmed a further 59 variants … [Click Below for Full Description]

VIOLA ZANINI GIUSEPPE (1575-1631).
Padova, Francesco Bolzetta, 1629. "Zanini's treatise is distinguished by its regional focus. Aimed at a local audience, Zanini?s ideas were exemplified through buildings and works of art predominantly drawn from Padua and nearby north Italian cities. Zanini's main contribution is that he provides the first formal discussion of the principles of quadratura ceiling painting, a subject explored in great depth by other XVIIth century authors, such as Agostino Mitelli. This large work is divided into two books. The three sections of the first book deal with the origins of architecture, building materials, and the 'elements' of architecture. The second book is devoted entirely to the five orde … [Click Below for Full Description]

BRANCA GIOVANNI (1571-1645).
Ascoli, appresso Maffio Salvioni, 1629. In - 16ø; 8 cc. [Click Below for Full Description]

BRANCA, Giovanni.
Dibner, Heralds of Science 175. Riccardi I, 188-9: «Raro e ricercatissimo». Horblit 172. Wheeler Gift 96. [Click Below for Full Description]

Bellissimo frontespizio allegorico inciso in rame.
