Rotterdam, P. van Waesberge. 4to. pp. 28; A-C4, D2. (English part only, of five). Roman and Italic letter. Woodcut tail piece, engraved armorial bookplate of Allan Heywood Bright signed by Alf Downey, on pastedown, mss note on the rarity of the edition tipped in on fly. The english translation of Cats's first book Sinne-en minnebeelden (Portraits of morality and love) published in 1618, extracted from the collected edition of his emblematic work published in 1627. Jacob Cats (1577-1660), seventeenth-century poet, moralist, and statesman, was one of the leading poets in the golden age of Dutch literature. Enormously popular, the books became the source of many well-known maxims and proverbs, giving him the title of “Father Cats,” a fond soubriquet still used by modern Dutch to describe him. He is best known as a poet and author of emblem books—illustrated collections of didactic and moralistic (although clever and often humorous) poetry. They are valued as treasure troves of sociological and historical detail, illustrating not only many facets of daily life in the seventeenth century, but the moral and philosophical ideals of the era as well. “Some time ago a study appeared … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

FERRARI, Giacomo; GARZONI, Tommasso
Aurelio e Lodovico Osanna. I. FIRST EDITION II. LATER EDITION Woodcut printer's device on title, woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces. Later cloth-backed marbled boards, some wear to boards and edges; repair to second title. Ferrari's work with contemporary annotations. I. First edition, rare. Ferrari (fl.1619-1627), chief physician of Mantova, dedicated this work to Vincenzo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua. He here examines the distinctions in philosophical approaches to many aspects of life through happiness and laughter. His main reference points are the two ancient philosophers, Democritus (the "philosopher of laughter") and Heraclitus (the "weeping philosopher"), due to their opposing philosophies. In the first of three dialogues Ferrari investigates the theme of laughter through the opinions of his two proponents, Alessandro Guerini and Cesare Cremonini, on a series of questions raised by Cicero, including what laughter is, where it comes from, and if it is appropriate for an orator. He references the works of ancient writers from Hippocrates to Aristotle. Ferrari states that laughter arises from the heart, and that it expands not only itself but the muscles of the face and chest. The second part is a dialogue about tears between two well-known physicians, André Du Laurens (1558-1609) and Joseph Duchesne (1544-1609). Ferrari, who translated Duchesne's work on pharmacology from Latin to Italian, explores the nature of tears, pointing out the obvious: some are sincere, other false. He treats the origin of tears, the different theories propounded by the ancient writers and phi … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

杭州市 (Hangzhou): 集雅齋 (Ji ya zhai), 1627. First edition. Softcover. g- to vg-. Small folios. 12.5x8.5". Unpaginated. Four softcover volumes housed in a dark blue cloth portfolio, with a pink paper label on the front cover and bone fasteners. Softcover volumes in dark blue paper wrappers, with gold string-tied bindings. French-fold leaves. The volumes have been rebound, with the original sheets re-backed onto newer paper, with some marginal loss. The collection contains the first 4 vols, of a total of 8, published during the reigns of the Wanli Emperor (萬曆年間) (1572-1620) and the emperor Tian Qi (天啓年間) (1621-1627) containing poetry, calligraphy and painting. The gorgeous woodblock prints in b/w and the masterful calligraphy of this late Ming-era collection are based on work of Tang-era poets, including 王維 (Wang Wei), 元稹 (Yaun Zhen), 李白 (Lee Bai), 杜甫 (Du Fu), and 白居易 (Bai Juyi). The first three volumes, contain calligraphy by noted artists 董其昌 (Dong Qichang) and 陳繼儒 (Chen Jiru). Most of the illustrations, which feature landscapes, figures, and other detailed natural imagery, are by 蔡冲寰 (Cai Chong Huan) with the woodblock printing done by engraver 劉次泉 (Liu Ci Quan). We have compared our set to three digitized copies and have found a number of discrepancies. According to the work of a Chinese graduate student at Nanjing Normal University in 2014, the original first editions of the work were printed without any publisher's information or table of contents*, corresponding to the state of our own copy. GRASSI, Orazio [pseudonym: Lothario SARSIO SIGENSANO]
Matthaeus Nuccius, Naples, 1627. First Italian edition, very rare, of Grassi's counter-polemic against Galileo's Il saggiatore (1623). This is the concluding work in the series of publications which document the "controversy of the comets," one of the most infamous polemics in the history of science. According to Drake, these texts "deserve study for their bearing upon the origin of modern scientific method . The controversy is of both scientific and philosophical significance because it was in this connection that Galileo disclosed his conception of scientific method." The Ratio ponderum was first published at Paris the year before, but that edition was very unsatisfactory (see below) ? the present Naples edition "took care of the numerous errors and omissions in the mangled Paris edition" (Feingold, p. 152). It was dedicated to Cardinal Francesco Boncompagni, the Archbishop of Naples (which explains why it was published there). Galileo preferred not to reply to the Ratio ponderum, and thus the controversy came to an end. "The dispute over comets had consequences of great significance both to Galileo and to science in general, as the favorable reception of [Il saggiatore] led him to proceed with the publication of the much more famous Dialogue, for which he was later imprisoned by the Inquisition. That fateful event was in turn intimately connected with the rift between Galileo and the Jesuits, which was widened and made permanent, if indeed it did not originate, in the public dispute about comets. Thus the controversy is closely linked with some of the most dramatic event … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

Antoine de Montchrestien
A Rouen : Chez Pierre de la Motte, 1627. (1bl), (8), 480, (1bl).

London: Company of Stationers, 1627. Small Octavo. Bound in period-style full panelled calf; with decorative blind tooling to boards, raised bands and gilt titles to spine. Binding is tight and shows well. Internally clean, with two very minor incidents of worm damage, showing in margin from title to p.37 and at hinge pp.12-105. A pleasing seventeenth century copy of one of the most significant works in the British legal tradition, commonly understood to be the first textbook on property law. Written during the reign of Edward IV and first published in 1481, Edward Coke, the supreme jurist of the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras, described it as "the ornament of the Common Law, and the most perfect and absolute work that ever was written in any humane science", which may suggest something of the esteem in which it has been held. DRAYTON (Michaell)
London Printed for William Lee, 1627. FIRST EDITION. Folio, 246 x 143 mms., pp. [xii], 218, recently rebound in full antique-style sheepskin, gilt spine, red morocco label; lacks portrait, but a very good copy. "A volume of miscellaneous works, The Battaile of Agincourt, appeared in 1627. Drayton may have hurried the title poem into print as background marching music for the duke of Buckingham's imminent campaign in France. Elizabeth Welsh, keeper of a lodging house in St Clement Danes, had charged that one January afternoon in 1627 a maidservant had seen Mary Peters raise her skirts, 'unto her navel before Mr Michael Drayton and that she clapt her hand on her privy part and said it was a sound and a … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]
