[MANUSCRIPT - DOCTORATE]. STORCH, Josephus.
An elaborately decorated manuscript serving as authentication of the granting of a doctorate in law by the University of Padua to Josephus Storch of Merano (Meran) in South Tyrol, son of Franciscus Storch. It survives in its original, richly gold-tooled binding, with the large seal of the University ("SIGILLVM VNIVERSITATIS IVRISTARVM PADVA 1627") attached by a braided cord. Since Padua fell under the authority of the Venetian Republic at this date, the doctorate was awarded under the auspices of the Doge of Venice. It further names various officials of the University as well as professors of Roman law, canon law and criminal law.The binding is slightly rubbed, mainly near the edges, outside the gold tooling. There is a crack in the wax seal, and the originally red cord attaching it has faded to light brown, except the part closed inside the manuscript. In good condition, with the decorations and gold lettering well preserved. For the binding: cf. British Library Database (shelfmark Davies875) (similar design)..

FABRI, Girolamo.
Ginanni, Memorie-storico critiche, 1, p. 188; ICCU (5 copies); KVK (same 5 copies); Streit V, 141, 389. Rare first and only edition, in the original Italian, of the account of the Theatine monk and apostolic missionary Francesco Manco's voyage to India and his missionary work there, prepared for the press posthumously by Girolamo Fabri (1627 -1679) in Rome. Manco (d. 1646), born in Lecco, Italy, travelled in 1639/40 via Basra and Bandar Abbas to Goa in India with Pietro Avitable (ca. 1590 - 1650) and other Theatines. One of the first missionaries to reach central India, he established missions at Golkonda (near Haiderabad), and on the east coast at Machilpatnam and Bhimilipatnum (Bheemunipatnum), near Visakhapatnam, building the first Christian churches in Golkonda and Machilpatnam. He worked among the Hindu, Islamic and Protestant groups there, both native and Western, converting many Hindus. The book gives a detailed description of the mercantile city Haiderabad and describes the Brahmin customs and beliefs. With the library stamp on the back of the title-page defaced, leaving 2 small holes in the title-page but not affecting the printed text, and occasional very minor foxing, but generally in very good condition. The cover has partly come loose from the bookblock at the front hinge and there are a couple small holes in the spine, but the binding is otherwise good. An important source for central India in the 1640s and especially for the Theatine missions.

MULLENS, Gelasius [= Guilielmus SALDENUS].
Two very rare pamphlets on the unity and controversies within the Dutch Protestant Church during the seventeenth century by the orthodox-Calvinist minister Guilielmus Saldenus (1627-1694). In the first pamphlet Saldenus tries to restore the peace between the Remonstrants and Contra-Remonstrants, and in the second he discusses the religious dispute in the Dutch Protestant Church concerning the person of Jean de Labadie, a 17th century French pietist. A third pamphlet bound in between is replaced by modern blank leaves. Good copies.Ad1: Knuttel 8972; ad 2: not in Knuttel; Tiele; Van der Wulp, etc..

He later moved to London to continue this trade, though Speed's real passions lay elsewhere, namely in the fields of antiquity and cartography. He joined the Society of Antiquaries where his enthusiasm soon attracted the attention of notables such as William Camden and Sir Fulke Greville. In 1596, Greville provided Speed with a full time allowance to write a 'Historie of Great Britaine'. It was during this project that Speed decided to add a cartographic suppliment to the work and it was from this that his famout atlas 'The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine' was born. When publihsed in 1611/12, his atlas was an immediate success, outdoing the one established by Christopher Saxon in 1579. There were a number of reasons for this Speed's atlas showed each county separately with its hundreds, was respendent with heraldic shields but most significantly had one or two town plans. 1627 KENT with her Cities and Earles described and observed An outstanding exle of John Speed's decorative map of Kent with later hand colouring. Inset maps of Rochester and Canterbury with elaborate crests and cartouche and battle illustration. John Speed (1552-1629) is the most famous of all English cartographers primarily as a result of The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine, the first Atlas of the British Isles. The maps from this Atlas are the best known and most sought-after of all county maps. The maps were derived mainly from earlier prototypes fo Christopher Saxon and Robert Norden but with notable improvements include parish Hundreds and county boundaries, town plans and embellishments such as the coats of arms of local Earls, Dukes and the Royal Household. For this publication of this prestigious atlas, Speed turned to the most successful London print-seller of the day, George Humble 'in poles head Alley'. William Camden introduced the leading Flemish engraver, Jodocus Hondius Sr. to John speed in 1607 because first choice engraver William Rogers had dies a few years earlier. Work commenced with the printed proofs being sent back and forth between London and Amsterdam for correction and was finally sent to London for publication. This exle is in fine condition with English text on the reverse. Good margins all round, perfect for mounting and framing. Central fold as issued and some mild surface paper spitting at the bottom centre. Overall size including the margins approx 40cm x 53cm. ALL OF OUR MAPS & PRINTS ARE GUARANTEED ORIGINAL ANTIQUES. Camillo Scalliggeri dalla Fratta (Adriano Banchieri)
In Bologna, per il Mascheroni, 1627. In 26mo (cm. 14,5); pergamena coeva; pp. 423, (1).

1627. General view with the ? in front and countless ships before & in the harbor, of which two galleons fire salutes. With both the city?s coats of arms. Engraving printed from 2 plates at Caspar Merian (Frankfort on the Main 1627 ? Walta-state in Wieuwerd, Friesland, 1686). (1654.) Inscribed as above. 8? × 28 in (21 × 71 cm). The marvelous panoramic view following Pieter Quast?s with c. 10? × 29? in (27 × 76 cm) only slightly larger one from 1599 setting new standards by its ?amplitude and the sheer audacity? as ?as much a portrait of the harbour of Amsterdam as of the city itself and underscores the unique importance of maritime trade as the principle source of the city?s wealth and power? (George Keyes, Pieter Quast, 1981), but here additionally with 24 indexed landmarks in the city. ? On the right Amsterdam?s original cog coat of arms, showing two men ? knight & merchant ? with dog in a cog, the former symbolizing castle & city, yet the latter loyalty. All three, however, sailing together on the ship of the future. On the left the conventional city coat of arms with the three St. Andrew?s crosses introduced in the 13th century and in use till today. ? One of the most wanted views from Merian?s Topography, here from the volume of the Netherlands published by Matthäus? youngest son Caspar. ? With the inevitable folds, otherwise very fine, wide-margined impression. ? The value of Merian?s views for once based on their faithful depiction recorded on the spot, then on their meticulous execution in the plate. All this, however, has to be ?estimated all the more as the turmoi … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

Bulengero, Julio Caesare
Lyon, Ludovici Prost, 1627. Bemerkungen: Seltene erste Ausgaben. Die Abhandlung des französischen Jesuiten Jules César Boulenger (1558–1628) „de conviviis “ ist in 4 Teile (liber) gegliedert. Jacques CALLOT (Nancy 1592 - 1635)
Acquaforte, circa 1627, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra. Martyrdom of twenty-three Franciscan monks crucified in Japan, with crowd attending the torture, and soldiers piercing the monks with spears; St John the Baptist and angels appear in the sky, throwing laurel wreaths, palm leaves and flowers at the martyrs. c.1627 Example of the first state of two, before the imprint of Israel Silvestre. Etching, signed at lower left. A great impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, tirmmed to the platemark and laid down on antique paper, an old restore at the lower right corner, otherwise very good condition. 1627 [later impression, 18th century]. Lisbon. Offincina de Antonio Alvares. 8vo, (194 x 140 mm). 3 ff., 100, 1 ff. Mid twentieth-century quarter vellum over decorated boards, spine lettered in ink. Minor foxing, else fine.- Second edition. This is the counterfeit editon. There are two issues, with the title pages in different settings of type. The present variant is distinguishable by the author's name appearing correctly on the title page, along with several other variations in wording and spelling. In the other variant, his name appears as "Joam Tavares Mascarenhas". The rest of the leaves appear identical, with the exception of a single "issue point" discovered on p. 1: in the present variant on the third line of the beginning of the main text the date "1621" is given correctly, while in the other variant it is given as "621". There may very well be other minor variants, as yet undiscovered. Parisiis: Sumptibus Michaelis Sonnii, Claudii Morelli, & Sebastiani Cramoisy, 1627. 1627 HUGE FOLIOS St Athanasius Alexandria Egypt Incarnation Paganism Constantine"Even on the cross He did not hide Himself from sight; rather, He made all creation witness to the presence of its Maker." ― Athanasius of Alexandria, On the IncarnationAn extremely rare, 16th-century edition of the works of Athanasius the Great, of Alexandria. Athanasius was a 4th-century Bishop in Alexandria, known for his Christian theology and his defenses against Arianism and forms of early-church paganism. He was active during the reign of Constantine the Great.Athanasius's works mostly include letters, though the letters are greatly in defense of Christianity. He sought to defend the Holy Trinity, as well as decrees made at the Council of Nicaea. This Nicaean defense (367AD) is one of the first-known written examples of the listings of the New Testament books. He also wrote a set of works, "Against the Heathen," and "On the Incarnation" which would become the first work of developed Orthodox theology. The writings of Athanasius serve two purposes - attack paganism and defend teachings of Christian redemption. This mindset is fulfilled throughout his works, including his Old Testament exegeses, where he defends the truth of the Holy Spirit.
