MEYER (Sébastian).
Fribourgi Brisgoiae, Typis Meyerianis 1627. - petit in-12. 24ff. 323pp. (1). London: Printed By I.H. For Richard Badger, 1627. First Edition. Quarto. [2], 33pp, [1], 56pp. Nineteenth-century morocco backed marbled boards. Rubbed, with loss to head of spine and corners. Soiling/spotting to title and final leaf. Original stab-holes to gutter margin. Nineteenth-century institutional blind-stamp to title, A2 and final leaf. Roger Maynwaring (1589/90-1653), bishop of St. Davids. Following a promising academic career at All Souls, Maynwaring, patronage ensured a perpetual curacy at St Katherines Cree, Aldates in the City of London, and other clerical positions in the capital before proceeding BD and DD in 1625. Public and parliamentary reaction ensued: Maynwaring and his works were investigated by a committee on religion in 1628, he was charged in the strongest terms with insulting parliament, fined, imprisoned, disbarred from holding ecclesiastical o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Henry Peacham
London - Francis Constable, 1627 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The scarce and important second edition of Henry Peacham's The Complete Gentleman. Bound in contemporary pigskin. The Second Impression, Much Inlarged. The full title of this work is: The Compleat Gentleman, Fashioning him absolute, in the most necessarie and commendable qualities concerning minde or bodie, that may be required in a noble gentleman. Whereunto is annexed a description of the order of a maine battaile, or pitched field, eight severall wayes: as also certaine necessarie instructions concerning the art of fishing, with other additions. The Complete Gentleman (1622), which Peacham finished after his return to London, is probably his best-known work, and it occupies a significant place in the history of courtesy literature. Its immediate inspiration was Peacham's conviction, arising from his continental tour, that the education of young English gentlemen was markedly inferior to that afforded to European gentry. . . The Complete Gentleman offers advice over a wide range of topics with humour and sagacity, and reflects many aspects of Peacham's experience -ODNB. Henry Peacham, 1578 - d. in or after 1644, was awriter and illustrator. Condition: The textblock binding is generally tight and firm. The inner hinges are held by two cords only. There is wear to the extremities, including bumping and foxing, with creases, and with marks and discolouration. There is slight loss. Internally the pages have browning with intermittent spots. Ray, John (1627-1705)
Printed for John Martyn 2 parts in one volume: [18]+499; [title Catalogus Stirpium in Exeris Reginibus A nobis Observatarum, Quae vel non omnino vel parce admondum in Anglia Sponte proveniunt]+[6]+115 pages with 4 plates (2 folding). Small octavo (7 1/4" x 4 3/4") bound in original decorative leather with four raised spine bands. First edition.John Ray (29 November 1627 ? 17 January 1705) was an English naturalist, widely regarded as one of the earliest of the English parson-naturalists, and sometimes referred to as the father of English natural history. Until 1670, he wrote his name as John Wray. From then on, he used 'Ray', after "having ascertained that such had been the practice of his family before him". He published important works on botany, zoology, and natural theology. His classification of plants in his Historia Plantarum, was an important step towards modern taxonomy. Ray rejected the system of dichotomous division by which species were classified according to a per-conceived, either/or type system, and instead classified plants according to similarities and differences that emerged from observation. Thus he advanced scientific empiricism against the deductive rationalism of the scholastics. He was the first to give a biological definition of the term species. When Ray found himself unable to subscribe as required by the ?Bartholomew Act? of 1662 he, along with 13 other college fellows, resigned his fellowship on 24 August 1662 rather than swear to the declaration that the Solemn League and Covenant was not binding on those who had taken it. In the spring of 16 … [Click Below for Full Description]

L'autore, apprezzato chirurgo attivo a Milano nella seconda metà del '500, si distinse anche per una particolare tecnica d'intervento al cervello. TAVERNIER, Melchior (1564-1641)
[Paris, 1627. Copper-engraved map, insets of polar regions. Scarce first state of Tavernier's separately-issued map of North America, including insets of the Arctic and Antarctic regions. In 1627, Tavernier, the most important mapseller and publisher in France, published a set of the four continents after Bertius, though possibly without his permission. Although crediting Bertius, the map more closely follows the Hondius mapping of 1618, with the completed northwest coast line, similar mapping of the Great Lakes and similar decorative ships and sea monsters (though without the decorative surround). However, unlike the Hondius map, here the southern coast of Tierra del Fuego is completed, as per the Bertius map of 1624. The map was first issued separately, and then issued in Tavernier's Theatre Geographique . The present example is the rare, separately-issued first state; the subsequent issue published after 1640 included additional toponyms, such as "Neuf Amsterdam" (i.e. New York), "Pleymouth", "Accadie" and others.
