William Lawson
ont> Francis Williams: London. Book. A very scarce work on horticulture by clergyman and avid gardener William Lawson. Being an early edition of his 'The Country Housewifes Garden' which was originally appended to his 'A New Orchard and Garden'. This is the 1626 edition of 'The Country Housewifes Garden' which was the second part of the aforementioned wider work. To the rear of this work there is an entire facsimile of the first edition (1618) of 'A New Orchard and Garden'. The final leaf of 'The Husband-mans fruitfull orchard' is a facsimile leaf. Therefore, the text for this work is complete, with the 'Country Housewifes Garden' bound to the start. This was Lawson's only work and was the first published work on gardening in the north of England. 'The Countrie Housewifes Garden' was the first horticultural work written for women. It remained to be the only horticultural work aimed at women for a century. A pioneering work, it went through several reprints during the seventeenth century. 'The Country Housewifes Garden' was frequently reprinted in Gervase Markham's 'A Way to get Wealth' which, for many years, lead to the work being misattributed as his. The ESTC No for the 1626 work is S108391. With the rules for herbs and seeds of common use with their times and seasons, when to set and sow them alongside the husbandry of bees. With five leaves of illustrations. The work is closely cropped, with no loss to the text and only a slight loss to the border of the images to pages 3-7. A fascinating, and important work in the field of gardening. Condition: In a full calf binding. … [Click Below for Full Description]

This is the best of the histories of the siege of Breda under Spinola; and it attained immediate popularity (Cockle). (Saint Nicholas) Olmo, Fortunato
Venice: Ex Typographia Deuchiniana, 1626. First edition. Engraved title vignette. 99, [11, index], [1, errata] pp. 4to (7-7/16 x 5-1⁄2 inches; 189 x140 mm). A rare example of the competition for the patronage of Saint Nicholas The Venetian historian Olmo (fl. 1595-1635) wrote this history to question Bari's claim to hold the remains of the saint, as expressed by Antonio Beatillo in his Historia della vita ... San Nicolò il Magno (Naples, 1620). There are numerous western sources which record the transfer of his remains from Myra to Bari in the year 1087, and the competition between the two cities began then. Olmo's work was written in a period when Venice was struggling to maintain its independence from the papacy, and it has a frankly political cast. It bears an elaborate dedication to the city and people of Venice -- but does not have a papal imprimatur. N. Barbuti, "Un'edizione dimenticata. La Historia translationis corporis Sancti Nicolai di Fortunato Olmo", in Itinerari di ricerca. Studi in onore di Giovanni Pinto, (2002), pp. 15-34; Wroldcat (4 copies: Harvard, Bibliothèque Nationale, Saint-Geneviève; and Berlin). Limp vellum, with pen manuscript title on upper cover, with very light dampstain in upper margin, else fine.

Theodore Agrippa D'Aubigne
Amsterdam i.e.Geneva: Heritiers de Hier. Comelin i.e. Pierre Aubert, 1626. Second edition, revised and augmented; folio, pp. 20, 1189 columns, 744 columns (so paged), pp. [40]; top of spine chipped, 3 small worm holes through the upper cover and into the first few leaves; occasional light foxing, but generally a clean, sound copy in full contemporary calf, gilt. D'Aubigne (1552-1630) was the son of a zealous Huguenot who instilled in him an abiding protestant sympathy and an almost reckless disregard for personal safety in the Protestant struggle. He was present at the siege of Orleans where his father was killed. He soon after went to Geneva to study under Beza. From there he attached himself to the Huguenot army under the command of the Prince of Conde. Eventually he joined the retinue of Henry of Navarre, and proved himself of great service to the future king, both as a soldier and a counselor. After Henry's elevation to the throne, the king found d'Aubigne's rough manner and caustic criticisms tiresome (in his literary works he freely exercised his gift of sarcasm with regard to the king and his family) and the rift between the two widened when the king converted to Catholicism. By the time he published the third volume of the present work, it was ordered to be burned by the common hangman, so free and unguarded was its satire. He fled to Geneva in 1620 where he lived the rest of his life. The Histoire Universelle is the work for which d'Aubigne is best remembered, "a lively chronicle of the incidents of camp and court life, [forming] a very valuable source for the hist … [Click Below for Full Description]

John SPEED (1552 - 1629)
"""This is the earliest English printed map of the continent of Asia"" (Shirley). Second state (of 3) from the edition publish by the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Geringer Plattenton. *** Bemerkungen: Es handelt sich hierbei um ein Exemplar der Erstausgabe von Speeds Asienkarte aus dem Jahr 1626, der ersten vollständigen Asiendarstellung auf einer britischen Landkarte. Henry Spelman
Londini: Johannem Beale. First edition, folio, pagination is erratic throughout, but the book is complete, as issued; *, A-2O6, 2P4; recent quarter speckled calf, red morocco on gilt-decorated spine; nice copy. STC 23065, with the 13th line of the title page reading "Chartis & Formulis." The title and the first leaf were subsequently reset; this copy is in the first state. The work evolved out of Spelman's studies of early English law, but "at the outset he experienced so much difficulty in assigning the proper meanings to Anglo-Saxon and Latin terms, that he determined to postpone his legal researches" in favor of the philological question. "In 1626 the first volume of the Glossary, extending to the end of the letter 'L' was published. Spelman had offered it in vain to Beale, the King's printer, for five pounds, or for books of that value. He consequently bore all the expenses of publication. The importance of the volume was immediately recognized by the great scholars of the day, but the greater part of the edition remained on Spelman's hands for ten years. He was collecting materials for the completion of the work until 1638" but it was not published in his lifetime. An imperfect continuation edited by Dugdale appeared in 1664. "As an ecclesiastical lawyer he ranks among the best informed that this country has produced, and his Glossary gives him a title to the name of inaugurator philological science in England" (DNB). NEANDER, Joannes
1626. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. An extremely rare Elzevier printing of Johannes Neander's famous treatise on tobacco! Tobacco was highly desirable and coveted throughout Europe for multiple purposes, and Neander was one of the first to clarify and gather all of its purposes into one important work. In 'Tabacologia,' Neander discusses the remarkable medicinal properties of tobacco, its power to cure diseases, and its use in surgery for wounds, ulcers, and abscesses. (Macinnes). Other important uses of tobacco included healing headaches, scurvy, arthritis, as well as being an important contributor to alchemy! Printed in 1626, this issue of 'Tabacologia' includes nine full-page engravings of tobacco plants, tobacco farming and processing, and styles of smoking pipes. Three of these plates are etching by the famous Dutch painter Moses van Uytenbroeck showing Indians cultivating tobacco plants. These illustrations are considered the earliest illustrations of American tobacco trade! [Attributes: First Edition]

Nicolas Sanson
Very rare first edition of the only atlas by Nicolas Sanson the Younger (1626 -1648). The present copy is in first edition with inscription on title page "Paris, chez L'Autheur avec Privilege pour 20 ans." All the maps bearing "Chez L'autheur avec privilege". This edition is not dated but it is probably the one that appeared shortly before his death. There was one other edition with 13 maps also mentioning "Chez L'autheur avec Privilege pour 20 ans" which according to Mireille Pastoureau in "Les Atlas français XVIe-XVIIe siècles", was published in 1648. The atlas was later published with the note "Chez L'Autheur" but without the mention "Privilege pour 20 ans" and also by Pierre Mariette in 1660 and 1665 (at least 13 years after this edition) . In 1697 it appeared in expanded form with Pierre Moullart-Sanson . The maps were also printed under the name of his father, Nicolas Sanson d'Abbéville, as a part of an atlas of the four known continents of the world.
