John SPEED (1552 - 1629)
"""This is the earliest English printed map of the continent of Asia"" (Shirley). Second state (of 3) from the edition publish by the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Henry Spelman
Londini: Johannem Beale. First edition, folio, pagination is erratic throughout, but the book is complete, as issued; *, A-2O6, 2P4; recent quarter speckled calf, red morocco on gilt-decorated spine; nice copy. STC 23065, with the 13th line of the title page reading "Chartis & Formulis." The title and the first leaf were subsequently reset; this copy is in the first state. The work evolved out of Spelman's studies of early English law, but "at the outset he experienced so much difficulty in assigning the proper meanings to Anglo-Saxon and Latin terms, that he determined to postpone his legal researches" in favor of the philological question. "In 1626 the first volume of the Glossary, extending to the end of the letter 'L' was published. Spelman had offered it in vain to Beale, the King's printer, for five pounds, or for books of that value. He consequently bore all the expenses of publication. The importance of the volume was immediately recognized by the great scholars of the day, but the greater part of the edition remained on Spelman's hands for ten years. He was collecting materials for the completion of the work until 1638" but it was not published in his lifetime. An imperfect continuation edited by Dugdale appeared in 1664. "As an ecclesiastical lawyer he ranks among the best informed that this country has produced, and his Glossary gives him a title to the name of inaugurator philological science in England" (DNB). NEANDER, Joannes
1626. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. An extremely rare Elzevier printing of Johannes Neander's famous treatise on tobacco! Tobacco was highly desirable and coveted throughout Europe for multiple purposes, and Neander was one of the first to clarify and gather all of its purposes into one important work. In 'Tabacologia,' Neander discusses the remarkable medicinal properties of tobacco, its power to cure diseases, and its use in surgery for wounds, ulcers, and abscesses. (Macinnes). Other important uses of tobacco included healing headaches, scurvy, arthritis, as well as being an important contributor to alchemy! Printed in 1626, this issue of 'Tabacologia' includes nine full-page engravings of tobacco plants, tobacco farming and processing, and styles of smoking pipes. Three of these plates are etching by the famous Dutch painter Moses van Uytenbroeck showing Indians cultivating tobacco plants. These illustrations are considered the earliest illustrations of American tobacco trade! [Attributes: First Edition]

Very rare first edition of the only atlas by Nicolas Sanson the Younger (1626 -1648). The present copy is in first edition with inscription on title page "Paris, chez L'Autheur avec Privilege pour 20 ans." All the maps bearing "Chez L'autheur avec privilege". This edition is not dated but it is probably the one that appeared shortly before his death. The atlas was later published with the inscription "Chez L'Autheur" (but without the mention "Privilege pour 20 ans") and by Pierre Mariette in 1660 and 1665 (at least 13 years after this edition) . In 1697 it appeared in expanded form with Pierre Moullart-Sanson . The maps were also printed under the name of his father, Nicolas Sanson d'Abbéville, as a part of an atlas of the four known continents of the world. John SPEED (1552 - 1629)
[Click Below for Full Description]

DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO. SIGLO XVII.

Legatura in tutto cartoncino settecentesco alla rustica, dorso rinforzato in carta decorata. Frontespizio leggermente rifilato in basso, a sfiorare l'ultima riga a stampa. [quella] scritta a Polignoto" (Savelli). Schweiger I, p. 308.

SPEED, John
are to be sold in popes head Alley against the Exchnage by I.S. and George Humble cum privilegio, 1626 [but 1627]. [London],: are to be sold in popes head Alley against the Exchnage by I.S. and George Humble cum privilegio,, 1626 [but 1627].. Double-page engraved map, with fine hand-colour in full. For this map Abraham Goos drew “on his engraving of North America in 1624, and the Briggs of 1625, to depict California as an island once more. He was the only Dutch cartographer to do so for some considerable time. There are five fewer place-names in California than the Briggs. He includes a similar faint northwest coastline and Strait of Anian. ‘Brasil' and ‘Frisland', remnants from the sixteenth century, make a stubborn appearance in the North Atlantic. The fledgling colonies of Plymouth in New England, and ‘Iames Citti' in Virginia, are both recognised. Decorating the whole are three attractive borders. The two sides illustrated the natives of the continent, the left bears those of the north, and the right those of the south. Despite the map's obvious attention to the English presence in North America, none of the eight towns represented in the third is from that part. This is owing to the lack of any contemporary views to draw on” (Burden). John Speed is perhaps the most famous single figure in the early history of the English map trade. He was a member of the Merchant Taylors' Company, made a freeman of the city in September 1580, and later Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. By training he was probably a rolling-press printer, but by interest he was a historian, and Q … [Click Below for Full Description]

First edition of the most lavishly illustrated astronomical work published in the first half of the seventeenth century, with many full-page illustrations of Scheiner's observations of the sun and of the optical instruments he had designed for the purpose. "For his masterpiece, Scheiner produced the first monograph on a heavenly body, the Sun. Even today it is still an impressive volume, with scores of engravings of sunspots and the various instruments needed for solar observations" (Jesuit Science in the Age of Galileo). "Scheiner's drawings in the Rosa Ursina are of almost modern quality, and there was little improvement in solar imaging until 1905" (Britannica). In this work "Scheiner agreed with Galileo that sunspots are on the Sun's surface or in its atmosphere, that they are often generated and perish there, and that the Sun is therefore not perfect. Scheiner further advocated a fluid heavens (against the Aristotelian solid spheres), and he pioneered new ways of representing the motions of spots across the Sun's face" (Galileo Project). Scheiner was one of the first to observe sunspots by telescope, in March 1611, and in 1612 he published his findings anonymously. This led to a famous controversy with Galileo, who claimed to have observed sunspots earlier, involving the exchange of several letters. Galileo then turned to other matters, notably the preparation of the Dialogo, but Scheiner continued his observations of sunspots, culminating in the publication of the present work more than a decade later. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
