ZONGMI (in Japanese: Shumitsu or Sumitsu)
1626. Eight columns per page, 17 characters per column. Three sizes of type. 42; 41; 38; 40 folding leaves. Four vols. Large 8vo (280 x 195 mm.), orig. dark wrappers dyed with persimmon juice (shibubiki), new stitching. [Enryakuji Temple, Mount Hiei: mid-Kan'ei, ca. 1626-30]. An unrecorded moveable type edition of the commentary and subcommentary of Zongmi (780-841), on the Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment. This is a rare example of an Eizan-ban, a book printed with moveable type at the temples on Mount Hiei, outside of Kyoto, where Enryakuji Temple, one of the most important monasteries of Japan and the headquarters of the Tendai sect of Japanese Buddhism, is located. Printing began there in the 13th century. "There were few of these [printed books] in the medieval period, perhaps due to the dominance of Kyoto itself as a printing centre...Eizan printing came into its own on a large scale only from the end of the sixteenth century, with the introduction of movable-type printing. Typographic printing flourished at various temples on Hieizan from the Keicho to Kan'ei periods (1596-1644), and with the publication of Chinese works as well as Tendai scriptures, publication and distribution at Hieizan began to develop into the beginnings of a commercial enterprise."-K.B. Gardner, "Centres of Printing in Medieval Japan: Late Heian to Early Edo Period," reprinted in Brokaw & Kornicki, eds., The History of the Book in East Asia (2013), p. 450. The writings of Dushun (557-640), Zhiyan (602-68), Fazang (643-712), and Zongmi are considered by many as the "crowning glory o … [Click Below for Full Description]

DONCKER, Hendrick
1626. Amsterdam: Hendrick Doncker. unbound. very good. Sea chart. Engraving with hand coloring. 24" x 18.5". In very good condition. Beautiful and rare Dutch sea chart centered on the Arabian Sea featuring the horn of Africa, Arabia and the Malabar coast of India. Mounted on larger sheet for atlas tip in. Hendrick Doncker (1626-1699) was a book seller, instrument maker, hydrographer and publisher based in Amsterdam and active during the mid-17th century. He was perhaps most famous for his publication of sea charts and nautical atlases, which he produced based on his own work, rather than copying them from earlier cartographers. His unique publications were also known for their accuracy as he often supplemented and revised his maps with the latest discoveries. Doncker also collaborated with Pieter Goos and Anthonie Jacobsz to produce the 'De Zeespiegal' pilot atlas. Upon his death, his map plates were acquired by Johanned Van Keulen. This is a beautiful example of his unique work.

John SPEED (1552 - 1629)
[Click Below for Full Description]

"""This is the earliest English printed map of the continent of Asia"" (Shirley). Second state (of 3) from the edition publish by the … [Click Below for Full Description]

After being involved in a series of lawsuits with the chapter of the collegiate church of S Salvador from 1629-30 onwards, and spending some time in prison, he was nominated organist of Jaén Cathedral in 1636. He gave up that post on 16 April 1640; on 2 May 1640 he was elected a prebendary of Segovia Cathedral..." "... Correa's surviving music is all in his Libro de tientos y discursos de música practica, y theorica de organo intitulado Facultad organica (Alcalá, 1626; ed. in MME, vi, 1948, and xii, 1952). This important volume, which shows him to have been one of the chief composers to establish the Baroque style in Spain, combines a repertory of organ music with a theoretical treatise and certain didactic features. [Click Below for Full Description]

(Chalmuch Hacienda, Yucatan, Mexico).
Chalmuch, Merida, elsewhere in Yucatan, 1626–1866. Folio (31 cm, 12.5"). 132 ff. (14 blank).. Law suits between Yucatan hacienda owners (one a woman), and hacienda owners and Indians; estate inventories and land transfers (three in Maya); materials showing usefully characteristic environmental effects — from the early 17th century and continuing through the middle of the 19th, these documents chronicle the development of the Chalmuch hacienda, situated approximately 12 kilometers west of the center of Merida. In the Yucatan — for geographic, geologic. ecologic, and economic reasons, particularly the quality of the soil and the lack of water for irrigation — haciendas had a later appearance than in other parts of Mexico, especially in the center and north, where hacienda development began in the decade after the fall of the Aztec Empire. It was not until the 17th century that haciendas began to be established in the Yucatan Peninsula. The earliest document in these five sewn-files is dated 18 May 1626 and concerns the settlement of a law suit between Bernardo de Sosa Velazquez and the Indians of the towns of Santiago, Cauqall, and Vac regarding unused lands and hills. The suit was settled in favor of Sosa with the provisos that he occupy the lands, build on and populate them, and bring in cattle within one year. The addition of new land to this original sitio is the substance of the remaining documents. Among them are two estate inventories and three documents of the first third of the 18th century in Maya (land transfers). In the 1850s and ‘60s there was a land dis … [Click Below for Full Description]
