FALE, Thomas.
1626. Imprinted by Felix Kyngston, 1626. Small 4to., in later marbled paper wrappers. [4], 60, [16] leaves. Illustrated with woodcuts in text. A little chipping to title-page, some browning and staining, ink manuscript doodle to title-page and final leaf. Second edition, the first edition was published in 1593. The last 16 leaves comprise a table of sines. An important work on sun dials, with attractive woodcut diagrams of dials by Jodocus Hondius "In 1593 Fale published his only known book, Horologiographia: the Art of Dialling, in which he described the design and construction of various dials to tell the time by day or night. His declared aim was to instruct students of mathematics and assist architects, surveyors, sailors, and others. A prefatory letter was addressed to his kinsman Thomas Osborne, who had invented and made one of the dials mentioned. This took the form of a semicircle carrying a sighting arm on which was set a small compass. The mathematician Augustus De Morgan considered Fale's table of sines to be probably the earliest such table to be printed in England. Later editions of the book appeared in 1626 [as offered here] and 1652. In 1604 Fale had a licence from the university to practise physic, but nothing is known of his later life or the circumstances of his death". (ODNB) [Attributes: First Edition]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Giovanni Battista Mercati (Borgo Sansepolcro 1591 - Roma 1645)
1626. Acquaforte misure: mm 266 x 212 Pittore e incisore italiano. Impressione eccellente. Ottimo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giovan Gioseffo Sole (Bologna 1654 - Bologna 1719)
1626. Acquaforte misure: mm 178 x 129 Pittore e incisore italiano. [Click Below for Full Description]

"[This is] the most famous early book dealing wholly with the subject of tobacco . . . Neander (1571-1639), a physician of Bremen, treats tobacco as a medicine, especially against the plague. Of pharmaceutical chemical interest are the prescriptions containing tobacco for treating a wide variety of diseases." (Neville). [Click Below for Full Description]

[iv], 188, woodcut printer's device on title; minute pinhole through the lower margin, repaired, one or two quires very lightly toned, but a very good copy, gently washed, bound in modern vellum gilt.Rare first edition of this semi-autobiographical picaresque novel, printed while the author was in exile in Lisbon following the publication of his politically controversial Historia apologética en los sucesos del reyno de Aragon (1622).'[Céspedes y Meneses's] achievement was to blend courtly and picaresque elements into a genre which reacted against the more sordid situations then popular in fiction' (Ward). Céspedes y Meneses has been described as a 'faithful reader of Cervantes' (Gonzales-Barrera). His work blends the idealism of the romance with the realism of the novella. Beside the general influence of Don Quixote, more specific structural connections have been found between the Soldado Pindaro and Cervantes's Novelas ejemplares (1613), which indicate not only that Céspedes y Meneses read the collection of stories, but based some episodes and some characters on three of them: El casamiento engañoso, Las dos doncellas and La señora Cornelia.Gallardo II 1793; Palau 54195. See J. Gonzales-Barera, Soldados, doncellas y expositos: Gonzalo de Céspedes y Meneses, un fiel lector cervantino, in NRFH, 57, no. 2 (2009), pp. 761–776. OCLC locates just four copies worldwide: two in Spain (BNE and Barcelona), one in the British Library and one at the University of Alberta. PURCHAS, Samuel (1575?-1626)
[London: William Stansby, 1626. Engraved map with three insets. Sheet size: 13 1/8 x 15 inches. Expert restoration at the side margins. The first western map exclusively of China, based on a Chinese mapping.Samuel Purchas made this map of China on the basis of a map Captain Saris had obtained in Bantam and had given to Hakluyt, from whom it came to Purchas. The original map, possibly the 1593 "Cao Map", was Chinese about 3 feet square on a larger sheet that undoubtedly included an index and perhaps a text. Purchas used the Chinese characters at the title and the circles and squares that, possibly, denote cities and towns only from the original. He added the inset "Picture of a Chinese Man", "Picture of a China Woman" and the portrait of Matteo Ricci, the Jesuit "Apostle of China." The portrait of Ricci is appropriate as his cartographical work ultimately contributed greatly to European knowledge of China (though after the Purchas map had been published). The map includes the boundaries of each province, the Great Wall in the north, the capital region of Beijing ("Pequin"), and many placenames are discernible: "Nanquin", "Canton", "Amacao", "Iunan", for example.

BARATTA Alessandro. Patroni Fidelissimae Urbis Neapolitanae. 1626. Incisione in rame. Cm.23x37. Rarissima.

1626. The Great Wall is depicted on the map, along with several annotations. Korea shown as an Island. Japan is also shown using a very curious depiction. The map includes a portion of India within the Ganges region, extending well into Central Asia. In addition to the wonderful views showing a sailing land craft, manner of execution and city views of Macao and Quinzay and the costumed figures of Chinese, Japanese and Pegu men and women, there are interesting notes throughout the map on various historical & mythical aspects of China, including a region where men are seduced by wonderful illusions and dirt is spun into cloth.
