BUTRON, Juan Alonso de.
Goldsmith BMC STC Spanish, B349; Palau 38161. First edition, in the original Spanish, of an important treatise on the value and quality of the art of painting, containing many interesting observations and remarks on the fine arts and its relation to other liberal arts, such as dialectics, rhetoric and arithmetic, presented in 14 discourses. Juan Alonso de Butron, a jurist born in Najera dedicated his work to his mentor Don Fernando de la Hoz, "Gentilhombre de la Casa de su Magestad", dated 1 October 1626. After the dedication, prologue, a laudatory poem by Joseph de Valdivielso, a list of the authors mentioned, a summary of the discourses and other preliminaries, the main text occupies 123 pages followed by an index of 36 pp. The beautiful frontispiece was engraved by Jan Schorkens (1595-1630?), a Dutch engraver who travelled to Madrid around 1618 to work mainly for the printers and publishers there and remained apparently to his death. With occasional contemporary manuscript notes and some underlining, and two bookplates on paste-down. With occasional minor and mostly marginal foxing and 3 of the last 4 quires slightly browned, but still in very good condition. The charming binding (from the revived golden age of the Spanish book arts) is slightly worn around the extremities and has a couple small scuff marks on the front board, but is also very good. A lovely copy of an interesting work.

Brunet, I, 632. 1 seul exemplaire au NUC.

EMBLEM BOOK). SCHOONHOVEN, FLORIS VAN
Lugduni Batavorum [Leyden]: Ex officina Elzeviriana, 1626. Second Edition. This is the first Elzevier edition of one of the most influential emblem books of the era, with the same fine van de Passe engravings used in the 1618 Gouda first printing. Attorney and humanist Floris van Schoonhoven (1594-1648) drew inspiration from the emblem books of Alciato, but departed from his predecessor by giving the commentary greater prominence and a purpose beyond identifying classical sources for the images. Schoonhoven scholar Karl Enenkel notes that the commentary here is "a philosophical essay, a diatribe, against civil war, with a special warning against its major cause, theological debate," and likens it to Seneca's "Moral Essays." The marvelous engravings are a mixture of classical subjects from Ovid and Aesop and scenes from contemporary life, including an alchemist in his laboratory. They are the work of Crispin van de Passe the younger (ca. 1594-1670), scion of a Dutch family of printers and engravers, who was noted for his remarkably fine detail work using a burin. The tasteful binding here was no doubt done for former owner Robert Hoe (1839-1911), founding member and first president of the Grolier Club. According to Beverly Chew, Hoe's library was "the finest [America] has ever contained." He acquired illuminated manuscripts, early printing (he owned a Gutenberg Bible on paper and one on vellum), fine bindings, French and English literature, and Americana. When his library was sold in 1911-12, it fetched nearly $2 million, a record that held until the Streeter sale more than … [Click Below for Full Description]

ZONGMI (in Japanese: Shumitsu or Sumitsu)
1626. Eight columns per page, 17 characters per column. Three sizes of type. 42; 41; 38; 40 folding leaves. Four vols. Large 8vo (280 x 195 mm.), orig. dark wrappers dyed with persimmon juice (shibubiki), new stitching. [Enryakuji Temple, Mount Hiei: mid-Kan'ei, ca. 1626-30].An unrecorded moveable type edition of the commentary and subcommentary of Zongmi (780-841), on the Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment. This is a rare example of an Eizan-ban, a book printed with moveable type at the temples on Mount Hiei, outside of Kyoto, where Enryakuji Temple, one of the most important monasteries of Japan and the headquarters of the Tendai sect of Japanese Buddhism, is located. Printing began there in the 13th century. "There were few of these [printed books] in the medieval period, perhaps due to the dominance of Kyoto itself as a printing centre...Eizan printing came into its own on a large scale only from the end of the sixteenth century, with the introduction of movable-type printing. Typographic printing flourished at various temples on Hieizan from the Keicho to Kan'ei periods (1596-1644), and with the publication of Chinese works as well as Tendai scriptures, publication and distribution at Hieizan began to develop into the beginnings of a commercial enterprise."-K.B. Gardner, "Centres of Printing in Medieval Japan: Late Heian to Early Edo Period," reprinted in Brokaw & Kornicki, eds., The History of the Book in East Asia (2013), p. 450.The writings of Dushun (557-640), Zhiyan (602-68), Fazang (643-712), and Zongmi are considered by many as the "crowning glory of Chine … [Click Below for Full Description]

DONCKER, Hendrick
1626. Amsterdam: Hendrick Doncker. unbound. very good. Sea chart. Engraving with hand coloring. 24" x 18.5". In very good condition. Beautiful and rare Dutch sea chart centered on the Arabian Sea featuring the horn of Africa, Arabia and the Malabar coast of India. Mounted on larger sheet for atlas tip in. Hendrick Doncker (1626-1699) was a book seller, instrument maker, hydrographer and publisher based in Amsterdam and active during the mid-17th century. He was perhaps most famous for his publication of sea charts and nautical atlases, which he produced based on his own work, rather than copying them from earlier cartographers. His unique publications were also known for their accuracy as he often supplemented and revised his maps with the latest discoveries. Doncker also collaborated with Pieter Goos and Anthonie Jacobsz to produce the 'De Zeespiegal' pilot atlas. Upon his death, his map plates were acquired by Johanned Van Keulen. This is a beautiful example of his unique work.
