PRYNNE, William
Printed by William Iones dwelling in Redcrosse-streete, London, 1626. REFERENCE WORK ON PURITANISM DEDICATED TO THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY FIRST EDITION, 4to [xl], 410, [ii], final errata leaf. Roman letter, some Italic. Woodcut initials, woodcut and typographical headpieces, early ex libs of Isaac Farmer and Humphry Govier who ‘borrowed this Booke for some tyme of his friend’ on fly, and Oliver Govier on f. e-p. at end. Light age yellowing, light damp-stain to upper margin of opening gathering, the odd minor marginal spot or thumb mark. A very good, clean copy, in contemporary limp vellum. First edition of the author's first work, dedicated to George Abbot, Archbishop of Canterbury, a virulent attack on Arminianism, and the opening broadside in Prynne’s lifelong polemical battle against all non puritans. Although Prynne had devoted himself to the Law his interests began to lie more and more with religious reform, which he tackled in the publication of several pamphlets. In particular he was opposed to Arminianism (the doctrine that God had given people the choice to accept or reject him) in the court of Charles I. Prynne was an ardent puritan and thus believed in predestination and original sin. In this work he harshly criticised the Arminians and was summoned to court to defend the publication. He avoided imprisonment and continued to publish pamphlets attacking the corruption of the theatre, the wearing of long hair, sport on Sundays etc. This work is important in highlighting the beginnings of the political and doctrinal split that would lead to the civil war. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM and BASIL THE GREAT
Antonio Pinelli [with] Gian Pietro Pinelli, Venice, 1626. FROM GEORGE III'S CHAPLAIN 4to, two works in one, 1): A-D8, ff. [32]; 2): ?-?8, +2, ff. [162]. Black-and-red Greek letter; large woodcut border on both titles, including vignette of the Last Supper; large printer’s device to the verso of the final leaf; marginal paper flaw to 2?viir, original paper crease to ?viiir affecting a few letters; clean tear in the margin of oiir. A very good copy, almost untrimmed, slightly browned due to poor quality of paper, in elegant tree calf; gilded border to covers; small repairs to the corners; skilfully rebacked; original spine with morocco label remounted, elegant decoration in gilt; inscription on the title verso ‘Caesaris De Missy Berolinensis: Londini: A. D. 1754’. Rare seventeenth-century specimens of these characteristic devotional booklets for Greek Catholics and Orthodox believers. In early modern Italy, one can find a considerable number of minority groups using the Byzantine rite, from the Albanian and Greek communities in the Southern part of the peninsula, to the settlements of Eastern Greeks in Venice and the main harbours, like Livorno. Greece and the Oriental Mediterranean Sea also represented an appealing marketing area, with very few competitors, given the reluctance of the Ottoman Empire in exploiting printing as a means of communication. Since the Renaissance, Venice had been traditionally the main centre for this kind of publication. A century later, Antonio Pinelli tried to set up in the city a business exporting Greek books to Constantinople. He acquired Gree … [Click Below for Full Description]

Early folds. Large chip (approximately 2 3/4 x 2 inches) in lower outer corner of second leaf, touching a few of the final letters on ten lines of text; loss from worming on a few letters of a dozen lines of text. Wear along folds; all losses filled by silk. Good. Spanish newsletter account of the historical visit of Cardinal Barberini to Barcelona during his 1626 diplomatic mission to Spain. Francesco Barberini of Florence (1597-1679) was the nephew of Pope Urban VIII and a prominent church leader during the 17th century, noted for his diplomatic activities during the Thirty Years' War and his extensive humanism. A lifelong supporter of artists, scientists, and intellectuals, Barberini was one of three of ten judges at Galileo's trial who refused to sign Galileo's sentence, and he was the founder of the renowned Barberini Library, a central meeting place for scholars in 17th-century Rome and home to one the world's great collections of manuscripts (now part of the Vatican Library). In February 1626, Barberini departed Rome as legate a latere to Spain, where he negotiated with the Count-Duke of Olivares on the question of French and Spanish control of the Valtellina. On March 18, 1626, Barberini arrived in Barcelona amidst much fanfare, which is recounted in the present newsletter. The text describes the visit from the landing of the Papal embassy to a series of musical per … [Click Below for Full Description]

[20], 500, 404, 408, [66 (index)] pp.. 1626 Early edition, following the first complete printing of 1605 (preceded by a partial printing in 1602), of this sometimes controversial, oft-reprinted treatise on marriage, morality, and sexual sin. Each of the three books has its own separate title-page. Brunet calls this "un ouvrage célèbre, à cause de quelques passages singuliers qui s'y trouvent,"while Englisch notes that "Dieses Werk enthalt alle moglichen Variationen uber die Geschlechtssunde in umstandlichster und eingehendster Behandlung," and Sommervogel simply states that the work caused its author "quelques chagrins" despite the purity and austerity of his personal life (a Jesuit from the time he was 17 years old, the Cordova-born Sánchez was said by his spiritual director to have "carried his baptismal innocence to the grave," according to the Catholic Encyclopedia online). Contemporary alum-tawed pigskin, tooled in blind, spine with inked title; binding darkened and scuffed, with clasps now lacking and with leather torn over head and foot of spine (lacking at foot, with underlying vellum showing). (Werder, Diederich von dem; Übers. - Torquato Tasso).
Frankfurt, Daniel und David Aubrij u. Clemens Schleich, 1626.. . [Click Below for Full Description]

[Galiani Celestino].
[Click Below for Full Description]

[Thirty Years' War]
[16]pp. Small folio. Dbd. Contemporary manuscript docketing on p.[16] and contemporary ink underscoring on p.[7]. Some loss, repaired in silk, from chipping at gutter and from worming in several leaves, the latter affecting some text but not exceeding 1 x 1 inch in area. Closed tears in final leaf, repaired with very early paper on verso. Light staining and foxing. Overall very good. The original Spanish translation of an important invective against Louis XIII during the first phase of France's involvement in the Thirty Years' War. At the time of this publication in 1626, France had actively begun to support the Protestant side in the conflict, concerned with the political threat of the Hapsburg states that surrounded it on three sides (in Spain and Spanish-controlled Flanders to the south and north and the Holy Roman Empire in Germany to the East). In 1624, Cardinal Richelieu was appointed to the Royal Council of Louis XIII and immediately began to institute a vigorous anti-Hapsburg policy. The following year France joined England in subsidizing the efforts of Christian IV of Denmark to defend Lower Saxony against the Holy Roman Empire, beginning an involvement in the war that would eventually lead to its own military participation against its fellow Catholic powers. The present document is a long and detailed warning to Louis XIII against pursuing a course of actions that would pit France against the rest of the Catholic world. According to the document, itse … [Click Below for Full Description]

Daniel, Samuel
London: Printed [by Nicholas Okes] for Simon Waterson Folio (28.5 cm; 11.5"). [4] ff., 222 pp. (without imprimatur and dedication leaves).. 1626 Daniel (1562?-1619), a poet and historian, was educated at Oxford but left without taking a degree. During his life he had several patrons, served several lords, and only obtained financial security early in the 17th century when Queen Anne became his Maecenas. His early poetry varied in style but by the early 1590s it was solidly in the dolce stile. In 1612 Daniel brought out his first important prose work, The First Part of the Historie of England. The present work completes that earlier one and after recapitulating the earlier history in just 22 pages, takes the story from the Conquest to the end of the reign of Edward III. The title is printed within a woodcut "arabesque" border and the text is in roman within line borders defining space for sidenotes. Evidence of Readership: Occasional pencil marks in text; final blank with old pencil notes and an inked couplet of yet greater age: "To make poor mortalls more in Love with breath / The Gods conceale the benefitts of Death." Provenance: Signature on front free endpaper of "Thos. Hekt"(?) dated 1822; older ownership note on inside rear board of "Fransisci Heyct"(?); 20th-century bookplate of the famous collector Boies Penrose II. Contemporary calf over paste boards, modest blind double-ruled border on boards, gilt beading on board edges; binding worn, lacks pastedowns, hinges (inside) open but binding strong. Inner margin of title-leaf discolored from old glue. Text generally clea … [Click Below for Full Description]
