Flavius, Josephus.
Thick folio. Amsterdam: (Jan Jacob Palensteyn für) Jan Everts z. Cloppenburgh, 1626. Thick folio, engraved title-page, (2), 338, (13), 77, (3) ff. With 103 woodcuts in the text by Christoffel van Sichem. Occasional damp-staining, title-page repaired with slight loss to image at corners. Old calf antique, gilt panelled backstrip with raised bands by Trevor Lloyd. First Dutch edition, translated from the German by Everard Bommelius. The first illustrated edition with these cuts appeared in 1611 and the first collected edition of the “Works” was printed in 1544. “Christoffel van Sichem II (c1581-1658) ... there is a gracefulness, a narrative, illustrative inventiveness about the woodcuts of Chistoffel II that surpass the works of his father. That his woodcuts which are all cut without crosshatching, tend to run to smaller, more intimate formats is perhaps only an outward criterion of the son's more bookish inclinations... There can be no doubt that, considering the quality of his work, this artist must be given a high rank among the book illustrators of the seventeenth century,” Lehmann-Haupt, Introduction to The Woodcut of the 17th century, 1977. “The works of Josephus provide crucial information about the First Jewish-Roman War and also represent important literary source material for understanding the context of the Dead Sea Scrolls and late Temple Judaism. Josephan scholarship in the 19th and early 20th century became focused on Josephus' relationship to the sect of the Pharisees. It consistently portrayed him as a member of the sect, and as a traitor to the Je … [Click Below for Full Description]

FABRE (Antoine).
A Rome, a Instance di Dominique Sforzini à la Victoire en place Navone, par François Corbelletti, 1626. - in-12. 16pp. 6ff. pp.7-26. pp.9-232. 40pp. [Click Below for Full Description]

Leyden: Elzevier, 1626 First edition. 24mo (11,1 x 5,2 cm). 480, 95 pp. Contemporary full overlapping vellum, spine with (hardly discernable) handwritten title. Engraved title page. This is one of the three editions in the Republics-series dealing with classical republican states, i.e. the antique Roman, Greek and Hebrew states. These 3 works were not only intended for readers with classical interests - of which there were then many, especially in the Netherlands - but also as descriptions of antique republican states, serving as models for the modern Republican state. A faint stain at the top of flyleaf and first two leaves, but otherwise a fresh and excellent copy. For a full description and more images please visit: www.zaalbooks.nl .

HAYWARD Sir John
HAYWARD, Sir John. The First Part of the Life and Raigne of King Henrie the IIII. London: John Wolfe [M. Parsons for William Stansby], 1599 [circa 1626]. Small quarto, early 20th-century full blue crushed morocco gilt, marbled endpapers. $1850.Second edition of the Life of Henry IV.Any publication about the usurper Henry IV was disturbing to Queen Elizabeth. "She caused both the author and the publisher to be examined and imprisoned and was apparently only dissuaded from hanging the former by Bacon’s comment, after reading the book, that the author was not guilty of treason but only of felony since he had stolen the better part from Tacitus" (Pforzheimer, 458). Though the colophon is dated 1599, this is a later variant issue, published circa 1626. STC 12997a (variant). Pforzheimer 457, note. Expert paper restoration to bottom margin of title page. Kessel, Jan van
11, 8 x 17,6 cm, Tadell. Jan van Kessel (1626 in Antwerp - 1679 in idem) was a Flemish painter of still lifes, who was the father of another painter with the same name Jan van Kessel, and Jan Brueghel the Elder's grandson. He was the son of Hieronymus van Kessel and Paschasia Brueghel, and was a pupil of his father and his uncle Jan Brueghel the Younger. He became a member of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1644 as "blomschilder" (flower painter). He was influenced by Daniel Seghers. According to Houbraken, he was famous in his lifetime for the neatness of his flower paintings and Cornelis de Bie wrote a poem about him.He specialized in small-scale pictures of subjects gleaned from the natural world such as floral still lifes and allegorical series showing animal kingdoms, the four elements, the senses, or the parts of the world. Obsessed with picturesque detail, van Kessel worked from nature and used illustrated scientific texts as sources for filling his pictures with objects represented with almost scientific accuracy.Jan van Kessel painted many animals (especially insects) and flowers, as well as some mythological and biblical scenes. his choice of subject leaned towards those which included animals and plants. His pupils were his sons Jan and Ferdinand van Kessel.[1]

In De L isle?s case, it could be said that his accomplishments surpassed his father?s. Up to that point, he had drawn maps not only of European countries, such as Italy, Spain, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, and regions such as the Duchy of Burgundy, but he had also contributed to the empire?s claims … [Click Below for Full Description]

appresso Girolamo Piuti al monte Parnaso, 1626. In 24, pp. (38) con fr. inc. in rame, ritratto dell'A. inc., 24 tavv. n.t. inc. all'acq. Piantanida, p. 118. ITA

Vaughan, William]:
London: Printed for Francis Williams, 1626. - [28],149,[1],105,[1],96pp. Small quarto. Modern blue morocco, spine gilt. Scattered contemporary ink annotations. Two small worn holes in the lower right corner throughout. Some dust soiling and tanning, with an occasional fox mark. Lacking the folding map, as usual. A very good copy. A very rare and rather eccentric work of literary fantasy, intended to extol the riches and gains to be had in Newfoundland and to excite interest in immigration. The anonymous author, William Vaughan (1575 or 1577- 1641), was a Welsh poet and colonial promoter who saw Newfoundland, with its rich fisheries, as a source of revenue for England and of employment for its people. "Cambrioll," mentioned in the title here, was the name Vaughan gave to his settlement on the island. Vaughan actually spent time in Newfoundland from 1622 to 1624, an experience which greatly adds to the accuracy of this promotional work; and despite the fantastical nature of the text, much early information on Newfoundland is to be gleaned here. "This work is one of the earliest contributions to English literature from America, and was intended to advertise Vaughan's colony. It is a queer fantasy in prose and verse, in which a succession of historical characters present complaints against the evils of the age in the Court of Apollo, and finally find the Golden Fleece in Newfoundland" - Baer. The text contains brief references to Lord Baltimore (a partner in Vaughan's Newfoundland enterprise) and Captaine Wynne, hence the Maryland interest. Vaughan also criticizes the social us … [Click Below for Full Description]

MINSHEU, [John]
London: Printed by John Haviland, 1626. [4], 760 cols. Recent calf backed tan paper boards, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece. Very minor wear to extremities. Light browning and damp-staining throughout, title laid-down with ink annotation to text, neat repairs to tears at bottom margin of Bb - touching text though without loss of sense. Appearing in 1617, compiled by lexicographer John Minsheu (1559/60-1627), Ductor in Linguas was the first etymological dictionary of the English language, and only the second etymological dictionary of any modern European language. Minsheu initially struggled to acquire funding for publication of the work, ultimately succeeding through the patronage of such distinguished scholars as William Camden. To cover expenses and make certain of selling the first edition run, Minsheu embarked on a promotional tour - gradually adding to his list of purchasers which eventually totalled over 400 individuals. Certain authorities have suggested this to be the first use of publication by subscription in English printing history. STC 17946.. Second edition. Folio.

SCHREVEL (Dirk).
Lugduni Batavorum, ex Officina Bonaventurae et Abrahami Elzevir, 1626. - in-12. 1f. Tableau dépliant. 11ff. 228pp. 47pp. "There was in Leyden a University growing physically and intellectually as no other University in the period was growing, and as it has not grown before ( ). It dos seem that the conditions described were those most favorable for the books business, and accounted in part for the great period of the Elseviers" (Davies). [Click Below for Full Description]
