[Johannes de Laet, ed.]
Leiden: Elzevier, 1626 First edition. 24mo (11,2 x 5,6 cm). 613, (10) pp. Full vellum; spine with title in ink. This work contains five traits on the geography, the history, culture and institutions of France. At the end a chronological list of the 64 French Kings, from Pharamond (419) till Louis XIII (1626). With the index, followed by the Privilege from May 15th, 1626. Already in 1629 a complete new edition on France was published, probably because De Laet was not quite happy with this compilation of 5 traits that were more or less overlapping each other. The composition of that new editition was completely different from the earlier edition, and had a different title as well: "Gallia sive De Francorvm Regis Dominiis et Opibus Commentarius". Although not mentioned as such and there being neither a preface, nor a dedication, Johannes de Laet must certainly be the compiler. The engraved title page with a portrait of the French King and the title-shield flanked by Ladies Justice and Faith, signed PS, the initials of Pieter Serwouters. This work is rather frugally executed as it is not illustrated with head-pieces or end-pieces and neither with woodcut initials. Leaves 7 & 8 of several quires unopened. A few leaves with small stains, but otherwise an excellent and fresh copy. For a full description and more images please visit www.zaalbooks.nl .

de Laet, Johannes (editor) - Claude Seyssel, Joachim du Tillet, Vincent de la Loupe, Philippe Honoré and Giovanni Botero (contributiong authors)
Ex Officina Elzeviriana, Leiden, 1626. (2), 3-613, (10) pages. engraved pictorial title-page. 115x70mm. Original full vellum. Text in Latin. The engraved title page depicts, a king centered between fleur de lys decorated drapes and two female figures, one of whom is holding a cross and the other a sword and scales. A coat of arms is centered above the publisher's imprint. Johannes de Laet (1581-1649) was a theologian, historian, geographer and businessman. He is believed to have been the overall editor of the 'Respublica' series, issued by the Elsevier publishing house at Leiden, of which this is the volume relating to France. Some dusting to title page and a slight discolouration mark to the upper margin of the first ten leaves, otherwise a very good copy of the first edition without any damage, library stamps, inscriptions or other markings. Lane Lady Fisher, Jane / Charles II] Blount, Thomas.
Small Octavo. IV, 93, pages plus 3 unnumbered pages Advertisement for books printed for and sold by S. Gamidge. Hardcover / 19th century halfleather with gilt lettering on spine. Very good condition with only very minor signs of external wear. Jane Lane (c. 1626 9 September 1689) played a heroic role in the Escape of Charles II in 1651. The main significance of the story is the key part that the escape played in forming the character and the opinions of Charles. Jane was the daughter of Thomas Lane and Anne Bagot of the parish of Bentley and Hyde (near Walsall). Her parents had married at Blithfield, Staffordshire in 1608. Their son, John, was born on April 8, 1609, the first child of what was to be four sons and five daughters. There are several early christening dates for a Jane Lane in the International Genealogical Index which have been estimated by contributors, most probably based on a spurious date for her marriage. However she was known as Jane Lane in 1651 and so was unmarried at that date. Her eventual marriage to Sir Clement Fisher (of Packington Hall, Warwickshire) is known to have occurred on December 8, 1663, being performed by the Most Rev. Gilbert Sheldon, Archbishop of Canterbury. After the Battle of Worcester in 1651 in the English Civil War, Charles II escaped and headed north into Shropshire and Staffordshire with several companions, including Lord Derby and Henry, Lord Wilmot. A reward of 1000 was offered for the capture of the King. It is likely that the King and anyone helping him would have been executed for treason, if caught. The King had a distin … [Click Below for Full Description]

L¥Isle, de /Covens & Mortier Guillaume ( 1626 - 1726 ) Paris
Artist: L¥Isle de /Covens & Mortier Guillaume ( - 1726 ) Paris; issued in: Paris; date: ca 1705. - technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 19,5 x 26; - description : Map shows the city map of Coblenz with the rivers Rhein and Mosel and the castle Ermanstein; - vita of the artist: Guillaume De L¥isle (1626- 1757) Paris, was a French cartographer known for his popular and accurate maps of Europe and the newly explored Americas and Africa. De L¥isle was admitted into the French AcadÈmie Royale des Sciences, an institution financed by the French state. After that date, he signed his maps with the title of ìGÈographe de líAcadÈmieî. Five years later, he moved to the Quai de líHorloge in Paris, a true publishing hub where his business prospered. De L¥isleís ascension through the ranks culminated in 1718 when he received the title of Premier GÈographe du Roi. His new office consisted in teaching geography to the Dauphin, King Louis XIVís son, a task for which he received a salary. De L¥sleís reputation as a man of science probably helped .This supports the claim of the historian Mary Sponberg Pedley, who says ìonce authority was established, a geographerís name might retain enough value to support two or three generations of mapmakersî. In De L¥isleís case, it could be said that his accomplishments surpassed his fatherís. Up to that point, he had drawn maps not only of European countries, such as Italy, Spain, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, and regions such as the Duchy of Burgundy, but he had also contributed to the empireís clai … [Click Below for Full Description]

Godwin, Thomas
Printed by Iohn Haviland, London 1626 - [8], 332, [4] pages. The is the rare second edition. Some Greek marginalia by an early owner. In 1803 it was owned by a prominent American Jew. It is unbound and needs guarding, sewing and binding. A few Hebrew words are interspersed in the English language text. Front end paper has the inscription in Hebrew, "Yaakov bar Asher HaCohen", and in English,"Jacob I. Cohen Junr His book. Marchesvan A. M. 5564 [=1803] Jacob I. Cohen Jr. (born September 30, 1789, in Richmond, Virginia; died April 6, 1869, in Baltimore, Maryland) was a banker, railroad executive, and civic leader who helped win for Jews the right to hold public office in Maryland. Sources differ on some details of his early life. The 1912 History of the Jews in America says his father was "Jacob J. Cohen", who emigrated from Rhenish Prussia to the American colonies in 1773, fought in the Revolutionary War, and died in 1808. The Maryland State Archives gives his father's name as "Israel I. Cohen", who died in 1803. The 1906 Jewish Encyclopedia says that the elder Jacob was the older brother of Israel, who followed him from Oberdorf, near Nördlingen, Bavaria, to Richmond in 1787, and there became the father of Jacob I. Cohen Jr. All agree that after the elder Cohen died, his widow, Judith Solomon Cohen (1766-1837), moved her six surviving children, all sons, from Richmond to Baltimore, where the family came to have great influence. Jacob and at least one of his brothers served with distinction in the defense of the city during the War of 1812. In 1812, Cohen and his brothers fou … [Click Below for Full Description]

SPEED, John
London: George Humble, 1626. unbound. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 15.25" x 19.75". This beautiful carte a figures map of Tartary by John Speed presents the many geography speculations found at a time when parts of Asia were largely unexplored by Europeans. Extends from Armenia eastward to include part of North America and includes the Arctic Sea and Nova Zembla. Korea is presented as an Island while the Kamchatka Peninsula is entirely absent. The Straits of Anian, believed to be associated with the mythical Northwest Passage is identified. The Great Wall of China is depicted in a grand style, south of which lies the Kingdom of China. Throughout, several kingdoms, important cities, rivers, lakes, islands, mountains, and other topographical features are noted. These includes important cities which were part of the ancient Silk Route. The Caspian Sea, presented along its East-West Axis according to the practice of the time, is identified by various names (Sea of Sala otherwise Bachu, called by the Russians Chualenske More, in old time the Caspian and Hircan Sea). Further north Tazota Island, from the Roman geographer Pliny the Elder, appears in the Arctic Circle. Beijing or Peking appears north of the Great Wall and is identified by the name Cambalu, as used my Marco Polo. Interesting notations are also included throughout, including one north of the Great Wall reading, "In this Country is a hil out of which they dig earth called by Pliny terra Asbestus, having fine veines like grasse which being spun and weaved yeeld cloth that wil nut burn in the … [Click Below for Full Description]

These plates were drawn by the late-Mannerist Italian painter and printmaker, Odoardo Fialetti (1573-1638) and engraved by Francesco Valesio (see also #3, Casserio). They depict the pregnant uterus, placenta and fetus and are among Fialetti's most beautiful anatomical engravings. "Four of them represent entire female figures with the abdomen cut open." (Eimas, Heirs of Hippocrates). "The work was published at Crema's expense and is rare." (Choulant, p.226). LEEUWEN, Simon van.
, . . Pitlo, Notarisboeken, p. 330 & pp. 62-71; STCN (1 incomplete copy); WorldCat (2 copies). Third edition, revised and enlarged, of a rare practical handbook for practicing notaries, written by Simon van Leeuwen (1626-1682), the most famous Dutch lawyer of the 17th century after Hugo de Groot (Grotius). It incorporates a dictionary of more than 4000 technical terms, many borrowed or adapted from Latin, giving simple definitions in common Dutch. Unlike the second edition, the present third edition explicitly notes that it has been newly revised, improved and expanded. It teaches all theoretical and practical knowledge needed in a notary's office, presented in the form of questions and answers, like a catechism, but sometimes also citing sources. Van Leeuwen's approach is refreshingly anti-bureaucratic.From the library of Eeltjo van Beresteyn (1876-1948). With a 1770 owner's inscription, some underlining and an occasional pencilled note. With a small chip in the frontispiece, a few pages with minor smudges or marginal defects, but still in good condition. Binding somewhat soiled and back board wrinkled, no endleaves. Rare practical handbook, essential for historical research in any field.
