DREXEL, Jeremias
1626. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "All wizards and witches are the professed and sworn enemies of God. O prince, O King, let not witches live!" (Clark) - Jeremias Drexel Jeremias Drexel was a 17th-century Jesuit writer and preacher, who ultimately gave up preaching to teach and write. His works surround Christian living, truth, and virtues of life. This book, "Nicetas" was a treatise written against unchastity and sexual immorality due to idleness within the people of the church. Drexel compares these problems with those of mythological kings and heroes such as Achilles. In addition to warnings against unchastity, Drexel writes against: · Gluttony and drunkenness · Indulging in luxury · Reading of impure and obscene books o "Books of this kind are a very plague, an assured poison to the reader" · The paradox of virginity and curiosity · Viewing pornographic images and pictures of temptation and the struggle of the 'wandering eyes' · Lying and dishonesty · Having toxic companions, evil friends. RENOU (RENODAEUS), Jean de.
Krivatsky 9570 (incomplete); cf. Hunt 272 (English ed.). Second edition of the Serres's translation into French of Renou's collected pharmaceutical works, with an attractive engraved title-page, showing 12 circular portraits in of famous physicians, including Masawaih al-Mardini (Mesue the younger), and on top of it all, the two most celebrated physicians, Galen and Hippocrates (Boqrat).Renou was a French pharmaceutical authority and chief physician to the French king, his work proved to be extremely popular and served to right numerous common errors regarding the curative virtues and properties of many plants and herbs. Pharmacopoeias like Renou's became quite common in the 17th-century as apothecaries were recognized for their knowledge and skill. Popular belief at this time also held that these medical works should be translated into native languages to better benefit those who did not understand Latin. With library ticket on half-title. Binding rubbed and rebacked as noted. Some foxing throughout, wormholes in the inner margin, especially in the opening pages, otherwise still in good condition.

At the end an extensive word-index is given and a last word by the editor closes the book. One of the best scholarly editions. Ad 2: Charmingly illustrated school edition by Daniel Heinsius of Aesop's fables, first published in 1626. It is a nicely printed parallel edition in Greek and Latin with Avianus's Latin verses and the popular Batrachomiomachia. The woodcuts were made by Christoph van Sichem II (ca. 1581-1658). Ad 3: Beautifully illustrated school edition of one hundred fables taken from classical authors. Nicolai and Van Kampen made the present woodcuts for the first Low Countries edition, published by Plantin in 1567.Binding slightly rubbed, spine slightly damaged; old inkstain at upper inner corner of first quires of the second work. Good copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

Polyander à Kerckhoven, Johannes; Episcopius, Simon; Thysius, Antoine; Walaeus, Anthony; Rivet, André (S.S. Theol. Professoribus)
Bonaventuræ & Abrahami Elzever, Lugundi Batavorum / Leiden. 1626. First edition. [88], 335pp. The text of this work is in Latin, and roughly translates as: "The critique of presence with thanksgiving, or the declaration of the United Netherlands, in the opinion of those who are called Remonstrants, on the most important Articles of the Christian religion". This work refutes the Confessio sive declaratio sententiae pastorum by Simon Episcopius (1622). The names of the authors is not stated but it is believed to be by Polyander à Kerckhoven, Johannes, 1568-1646. Bavinck, Herman, 1854-1921. Thysius, Antoine, 1603-1665. Walaeus, Anthony, 1573-1639. Rivet, André, 1572-1651. The book is bound in contemporary vellum covered boards with a leather title that appears to be from a later date. Bearing in mind the age, the case of the book is in very good condition with some expected soiling and wrinkling to the vellum. A piece of the title label is missing. The contents are secure and clean although the book does suffer from water staining which has also caused some wrinkling to the pages. This is mostly visible at the start of the book and on roughly pages 130 to 150 - see accompanying photograph for an example. There are a few other marks but if it were not for the water staining the pages would be very clean for a book that is nearly 400 years old. The endpapers and title page have some expected soiling and there is an old Dutch bookseller's label on the front fixed endpaper. A name has been written on the free endpaper facing the title pager. Size: 8" tall [Attributes: First Editio … [Click Below for Full Description]

BUTRON, Juan Alonso de.
Goldsmith BMC STC Spanish, B349; Palau 38161. First edition, in the original Spanish, of an important treatise on the value and quality of the art of painting, containing many interesting observations and remarks on the fine arts and its relation to other liberal arts, such as dialectics, rhetoric and arithmetic, presented in 14 discourses. Juan Alonso de Butron, a jurist born in Najera dedicated his work to his mentor Don Fernando de la Hoz, "Gentilhombre de la Casa de su Magestad", dated 1 October 1626. After the dedication, prologue, a laudatory poem by Joseph de Valdivielso, a list of the authors mentioned, a summary of the discourses and other preliminaries, the main text occupies 123 pages followed by an index of 36 pp. The beautiful frontispiece was engraved by Jan Schorkens (1595-1630?), a Dutch engraver who travelled to Madrid around 1618 to work mainly for the printers and publishers there and remained apparently to his death. With occasional contemporary manuscript notes and some underlining, and two bookplates on paste-down. With occasional minor and mostly marginal foxing and 3 of the last 4 quires slightly browned, but still in very good condition. The charming binding (from the revived golden age of the Spanish book arts) is slightly worn around the extremities and has a couple small scuff marks on the front board, but is also very good. A lovely copy of an interesting work. [Attributes: First Edition]
