Giulio Strozzi (1583-1652) is better remembered as a writer of libretti used by Monteverdi, Sacrati, and others, though he found fame earlier as a poet. His 'Il Barbarigo' is a 'poema eroico' in Tasso's sense, though based on historical events: the friendship that formed between the wealthy Niccolo Barbarigo and the younger Marco Trevisano in the 1610s. Trevisano stood up for Barbarigo against his exclusion from fashionable Venetian society, was ostracised along with him, and the pair moved in together before publishing wills in which each was made the main heir of the other. It became much discussed as an example of philosophically 'perfect' friendship, inspiring several collected volumes of letters and poems discussing the pair as well as Strozzi's poem, which was reprinted in smaller format almost … [Click Below for Full Description]

Daniel, Samuel
London: Printed [by Nicholas Okes] for Simon Waterson, 1626. Folio (28.5 cm; 11.5"). [4] ff., 222 pp. (without imprimatur and dedication leaves). Daniel (1562–1619), a poet and historian, was educated at Oxford but left without taking a degree. During his life he had several patrons, served several lords, and only obtained financial security early in the 17th century when Queen Anne became his Maecenas. His early poetry varied in style but by the early 1590s it was solidly in the dolce stile.    In 1612 Daniel brought out his first important prose work, The First Part of the Historie of England. The present work completes that earlier one and after recapitulating the earlier history in just 22 pages, takes the story from the Conquest to the end of the reign of Edward III.    The title is printed within a woodcut "arabesque" border and the text is in roman within line borders defining space for sidenotes.    Evidence of Readership: Occasional pencil marks in text; final blank with old pencil notes and an inked couplet of yet greater age: "To make poor mortalls more in Love with breath / The Gods conceale the benefitts of Death."    Provenance: Signature on front free endpaper of "Thos. Hekt"(?) dated 1822; older ownership note on inside rear board of "Fransisci Heyct"(?); 20th-century bookplate of the famous collector Boies Penrose II.         STC (rev. ed.) 6251; ESTC S107343. Werder, Diederich von dem; Übers. – Torquato Tasso).
Frankfurt, Daniel und David Aubrij u. Clemens Schleich, 1626. [Click Below for Full Description]

Sixth edition, first published in 1605. The edition from 1621 was the first edition with the engraved title after P. Rubens, this is the second edition with the same engraved title-page. A work of moral theology which is 'one of the earliest treatises to investigate the ethics of economics' (The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church, p. 818). De justitia et jure is Lessius's most important book. It was notable especially for its analysis of contemporary commercial practice, and Lessius's opinions on the morality of various business arrangements exercised a substantial influence on the thinking of statesmen and church leaders. 'Combining a full command of earlier scholastic authorities with a hitherto unprecedented grasp of market phenomena, Lessius provided fresh insights that challenged traditional economic doctrine in authoritative fashion. Lessius is, certainly, the foremost continuator of the Spanish school of economic thought. Further, he has claims for consideration as a major contributor to the development of economic analysis ...' Andrade, Antonio de
Lisbon: Mateo Pineiro, 1626. 23 leaves. Small quarto. Modern half morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Manuscript foliations in upper outer corner of recto of each leaf. A bit of faint spotting. Very good. The first Spanish language edition, following by a few months the first edition (which was printed in Portuguese), printed in Lisbon the same year. This is the second overall printing of Andrade's important letter. The first authoritative, printed account of a European traveller's visit to Tibet. Antonio de Andrade (1580-1634) was a Portuguese Jesuit missionary who entered the order in 1596. From 1600 to 1624 he was the principal missionary in the Indies. In 1624, with the support of the Moghul emperor, he set out for Tibet, hoping to make contact with a reported trans-Himalayan Christian community. Travelling north to the upper Ganges and then to Mana, on the present- day border of Tibet, he continued on past local resistance to the state of Guge, where he encountered his first Buddhists. Andrade successfully convinced the King to allow the teaching of Christianity, and returned to Agra, where he wrote the present letter to his superiors, relating his journey and his experiences. Andrade would ultimately return to Tibet two more times, consecrating a church at Tsaparang in 1626. Andrade's printed letter is crucially important as being the first authentic report of Tibet by a European who undoubtedly went there (the 14th-century visit of Odorico de Pordenone remains in dispute). It was very popular and quickly went through many editions. "Throughout Catholic Eur … [Click Below for Full Description]

[SCOTT, Thomas (1580?-1626)]
Utricht (sic) [i.e. London?]: Printed by John Schellem, 1626. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good+. 4to (178 x 133 mm). [2], 41pp. Modern speckled calf, title lettered in gilt; (title slightly browned and with a “v”-shaped internal tear neatly repaired, fore-corners trimmed round, lacking final blank, endpapers renewed). 17th century pen markings on verso of p. 41, largely illegible, although curiously the number “4” appears twice on the title and verso leaf. First Edition of Scott’s imaginary tale wherein Spanish designs were uncovered by the specter of the illustrious Sir Walter Raleigh. Sir Walter Rawleighs Ghost was written by Thomas Scott, a radical English Minister, known for his anti-Spanish and anti-Catholic pamphlets. Infamously, he was murdered in Utrecht the same year that this work was published. The premise of Scott’s work had been earlier established by Thomas Gainsford, reported to have authored, “Vox Spiritus, or Sir Walter Rawleigh’s Ghost, a Conference between Signr Gondamor her Maties Ambassador of Spaine…” (1620?). In a letter from Sir George Calvert to the Marquis of Buckingham dated 1620, Calvert says, “Sir Walter Raleighes ghost … is as seditious a booke as the other [referring to Scott’s Vox Populi (1620), which appeared as an anonymous tract against the proposed marriage of Prince Charles and Maria Anna of Spain], yf not much worse, but not yet printed. The author is a poore Capitain about London one Gainsford, whom I have committed to prison.” Scott, evading imprisonment, only later claims authorship of the controversial Vox Populi. BARCLAY (Jean).
A Paris Chez Antoine Estoct 1626 1A Paris, Chez Antoine Estoct, 1626. [Click Below for Full Description]
