s.e, 1624. In 8, pp. (2b) + (2) + 328. Piccolissima gora all'ang. est. sup. delle prime 40 cc. Esemplare rifilato ai margg. Legatura in p. pg. ottocentesca. [Click Below for Full Description]

Gerolamo SCARSELLO (Bologna 1624 - 1678 circa)
Bronzini Cristoforo
Zanobi Pignoni - Simone Ciotti, 1624. Three volumes, 4to, contemporary flexible vellum, (8), 142, (2), 130, (2), 126, (6) pp. + (2), 143, (1), 143, (1 blank), 130, (22) pp. + (12), 216, (8) pp. The first part is known in two different issues, our copy combines the two issues. On the front fly-leaf of the third volume is a full-page drawing showing an emblem with the initial PLC. Some browning, light dampstains, the front cover of a volume has slightly shrank, otherwise a very good, genuine copy. RARE FIRST EDITIONS. Bronzini was made cardinal by Pope Paul V in 1615. He then moved to Florence, where he conceived the idea of writing an ambitious work in praise of women. Della dignità et nobiltà delle donne should have originally comprised 24 parts (4 weeks of 6 days each), but the project was never completed. The first six days of the first week were written in 1618 and published between 1622 and 1625, while the first two days of the second week were printed respectively in 1628 and in 1632. Although already approved by the ecclesiastical authorities, the first book was condemned in 1622 "donec corrigatur" (cf. Index libror. prohib., Rome, 1664, p. 38). It is presumable that the condemnation refers to a previous edition, now lost, or that the edition was corrected while still under the presses. The work is written in the form of a dialogue. The scene is set in the Medici's garden in Rome during a hot summer. The interlocutors are six: three women, outstanding for their beauty, virtue and nobility (Margherita from Rome, Vittoria from Mantua, Leonora from Florence) and three me … [Click Below for Full Description]

CROLL, Oswald
"Croll or Crollius was born at Wetter in 1580, studied at Marburg, Heidelberg, Strasburg, Geneva, travelled, and became phisician of Prince Christian of Anhalt-Bernberg. In medecine he was an adherent of Paracelsus, and invented several remedies. The first edition of the "Basilica chymica" was published at Franckfurt, 1608." (Ferguson) "The "Basilica chymica" became the standard scientific work of iatrochemistry. ... In sharp contrast with Paracelsus' vagueness, Crollius describes in detail the individual preparations, their composition, and their application. This explains why the book became such a great success, running to many editions and occasionning many commentaries." DSB 3, 471. Légères rousseurs. Un petit manque au bas du dos. COELLO de BARBUDA, Luis
Lisbon: Pedro Craesbeeck, 1624. Recent vellum over boards, spine gilt. F. 102, frequently lacking, in facsimile. F. 161 misnumbered 145. Title p. slightly soiled, small hole repaired just touching printed surface, last line of f. 91 verso & f. 94 recto poorly printed, very small wormhole in upper margin of ff. 125-150, small marginal repairs to ff. 28 & 112, 134-187 & 189-223, some occasional slight spotting and staining, very occasional marginalia.. The author, a Portuguese member of the royal household, was born in Lisbon in the sixteenth century; and, though forced to accept the sovereignty of the Spanish King, he very evidently retained his love of his native country and its national heroes. He explained in his preface to the archbishop of Braga, to whom the book is dedicated, that his work is intended to be a more lasting monument to the heroes of his nation than the statues with which the Greeks formerly honoured their great; and to this end, he has written his work in Spanish, so that it might find a wider field of appreciation than if he had written it in Portuguese. Though written with a touch of pride for the exploits of the Lusitanians, the writers attitude towards Portugals enemies is fair and unprejudiced (Maggs, Spanish Books, 245). Palau 56169. Innocêncio V, 280 & XVI, 9. Palha 2767, ouvrage rare et estimé. Borba de Moraes I, 76. Bernstein, Pedro Craesbeeck & sons, 17th century publishers to Portugal & Brazil, 244.

Martini Opicii (Martin Opitz von Boberfeld - 1597-1639)
Eberhard Zetzners, Strassburg, 1624. Bound with the Opitz is another rare book: Musaeus Grammaticus' Deschonen Poeten Lieb-und Lob-gedichte von Hero und Leandern, Aus dem Griechischen in Hochteutsche. Published in Leipzig, Andreas Ohlen, Buchhendlers, 1633. This second volume with one page with an edge trim, not affecting text. 32pp. Both volumes in what I think is a late 17th Century full brown calf binding with gilt ruling to both boards & spine with finely engraved title page. Small loss of leather near to the bottom of front hinge and general age wear but overall still sound and tight. Internally in good condition with some offsetting from text to opposite page, light spotting, browning to pages and light stain to bottom right corner from page 200 onwards, ink contemporary doodles to front free endpaper and ink marks/scribbles to pages 125-6, not affecting text. Worming to bottom left of first seven pages, however the first page of the dedication (mis numbered 233/234 and with edges trimmed) doesn't have worming, which suggests it was, at one time, further back in the book. The last page of dedication has a repaired tear across the page and is still quite legible. Optiz was the head of the so called First Silesian School of Poets and was during his life regarded as the greatest German poet, he may justly claim to have been "The Father of German Poetry". It is said that this book was put together without his knowledge and taken from a manuscript he left in Heidelberg in 1620. [2], [12], 240pp. Complete, collates with the copy at The Yale University Library. [Attributes: … [Click Below for Full Description]

[ANTWERP - BRUSSELS - PHARMACOPOEIA ]. [BOUDEWIJNS, Michiel, and others].
Daems & Vandewiele, Noord- en Zuidned. stedelijke pharmacopeeën, pp. 62-63 (5 copies) & 70-71 (7 copies); STCV 12879911 (5 copies incl. 1 defective) & 12879890 (4 copies, incl. 1 lacking title-page). First (and in the case of Antwerp only) editions, in Latin, of the first and only official pharmacopoeias for Brussels and Antwerp, containing hundreds of medicinal recipes and throwing a great deal of light on 17th-century medical practice in the Low Countries. The Antwerp work's separate part with the title "Selectiora chymica" shows the rising importance of chemistry in the production of medicines. In 1624 the magistrates of Antwerp set up a Collegium Medicum, which did declare that medicines were to be prepared following Cordus until further notice. Brussels had begun to discuss plans to establish a Collegium Medicum already ca. 1605, but failed to do so. A 1636 plague gave city magistrates the impetus to compile a pharmacopoeia, however, and they commissioned four leading city physicians to compile the present Brussels pharmacopoeia, which appeared in 1641. In 1659 the Antwerp Collegium Medicum decided to produce their own official pharmacopoeia. With a 5-line presentation inscription on the flyleaf from the principal compiler of the Antwerp pharmacopoeia, Michiel Boudewijns to St Bernard's Abbey in Hemiksem, south of Antwerp, undated, but clearly between 1661 and Boudewijn's death in 1681. With an occasional correction in an early hand, an inscription at the end of the Brussels work by Godefridus Bouvaert (1685-1770), and the bookplate of Oscar van Schoor (1873-1936) on pa … [Click Below for Full Description]
