MARTIAL [Marcus Valerius MARTIALIS].
Sedan, Jean Jannon, 1624. 8vo. 17th-century calf with raised bads, spine lettered and ornamented in gilt, coverls with gilt-ruled double-fillets; pp. [viii], 342, woodcut printer's device to title, a few woodcut head-pices and initials; binding worn, but stable, a few faint marginal waterstains, otherwise a very good and still crisp copy; early 18th-century French ownership inscriptions and one armorial seal to title. First Jannon edition. Printed in the independent (up to 1651) Protestant Principality of Sedan in the Ardennes, close to the modern French border with Belgium, this collection of verses by the greatest Latin epigrammatist is a sensational achievement of French typography and Protestant book production. In 1610 the Parisian master printer Robert III Estienne recommended the printer, librarian and typecutter Jean Jannon to the Prince of Sedan as a talented and Protestant man of the book. Sedan developed into an academy of Protestant erudition with an impressive collection of printed books, manustcripts and works of art. Jannon began to print academic theses, classics and religious works, whilst designing and cutting types in Latin, Greek, Hebrew and Syriac. The type used here, la petite sedanoise, as it became known later, after it had been pirated by a Parisian typecutter, was the smallest type created since the invention of printing. It measures a mere 4.9 points. Jannon reserved this particular type solely for his own use and did not sell it to other printers as he did with other types of his design. The French government seized Jannon's printshop in 1641 and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Avercamp, Hendrick
Prijs: ?825,-.

Heywood (ca. 1573–1641), a prominent poet and playwright, here ends almost a decade publication-free with a "volume celebrat[ing] strong women throughout history, from mythological goddesses to earthly leaders such as Queen Elizabeth and Queen Anne" (DNB).    Each book revolves around the themes appropriate to its sovereign muse to cover, in the end, almost any topic imaginable, from mythological women's effects on the functioning of the universe to the expectations and proper execution of marital duties to the finer points of witchcraft, among others, using a mixture of prose and verse and lots of wonderful epithets. Numerous women, both virtuous and wicked, are also individually discussed, from Greek mythology to the present day.         ESTC S119701; STC (2nd ed.), 13326. 18th-century speckled calf, highly polished covers nicely panelled in blind with well-proportioned rules and rolls, board edges ruled in gilt; rebacked with modern black leather gilt spine label, new endpapers, and preliminary blank (only) lacking. Heywood, Thomas
London: Printed by Adam Islip, 1624. Hardbound. A bit of rubbing, new endpapers; lacking 3 blank leaves, several leaves a bit shorter, perhaps supplied from another copy; very good. Later calf with 5 raised bands and applied leather labels in compartments [x], 466 pp. Lacking blanks A1, A2 and 2R6. Title within illustrated pictorial engraved border; woodcut head-and tail-pieces. (Small folio) 28x18 cm (11x7") later full paneled calf, modern spine labels, all edges gilt All edges are gilt. Engraved title with portraits of the nine muses, woodcut head- and tailpieces Appears to lack original blanks or endpapers. With this work Thomas Heywood ended a long literary silence, probably due to a poor financial situation, as suggested in the dedication to his former patron, the Earl of Worcester. The title page is engraved; first word of title in Greek characters. Several additional printers' woodcut engraved devices throughout typically at top of chapter or section pages. Roughly interpreting the table on Contents, we see these nine books as follows: 1st: Concerning Celelestial, Terrestrial, Marine and Infernal Goddesses. 2nd: Concerning the Muses, Sybils, Vestals, Prophetesses, Hesperides, The Graces, etc. 3rd: Concerning Illustrious Queens, Famous Wives, Mothers, Daughters, etc. 4th: Concerning Women Incestuous, Adultereresses, and Such As Have Come by Strange Deaths; 5th: Concerning Amazons, and Other Women, Famous Either For Valour of Beautie. 6th: Concerning Chaste and Wonton Women. 7th: Concerning Pietie of Daughters, Mothers, Sisters and Wivews. 8th: Concerning Women Evrry W … [Click Below for Full Description]

Opere molto rare. Dimensioni 148x187 circa.
