Opitz, Martin.
Gutes Exemplar. – VD17 3:315035W; Dünnhaupt 71.1; Goed. III 20, la und 42, 13; Szyrocki 55; Faber du Faur 203; Jantz 1909; BST 479; Maltzahn 1277; Bulling 22. [Attributes: First Edition]

[4]pp. In Spanish. Woodcut illustration of the Virgin Mary and decorative initial on first page. Small folio. Dbd. Contemporary ink inscriptions in margins of second page. Early folds. Separated at center fold. A few small stains in upper margin of first leaf, not affecting text; very faint dampstains. Else very good. Two letters from Rome, signed in print by the Archdeacon of Carmona, Mateo Vázquez de Leca, and the Spanish composer and Franciscan priest, Bernardo de Toro, regarding the founding of a military religious order devoted to the Immaculate Conception of Mary. Writing from Rome in February 1624, the two had recently arrived from Seville, a major base of support for the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception, the belief that the Virgin Mary was conceived without original sin. While the Church had implicitly endorsed the doctrine with the establishment of its feast day in 1476, the belief was not ruled dogma until 1854. Before that time, a healthy debate reigned among both theologians and popular believers, and the Franciscans and general populace of Seville were well known for their fierce advocacy of the doctrine. Bernardo de Toro (1570-1643) and Mateo Vázquez de Leca (1563-1649) contributed substantially to the cultural aspects of the Sevillan movement, with the former setting popular verses on the subject to music and the latter supporting devotional painters and the famous Seises dancers with generous funds. Toro and Vázquez are still remembered as Baroque-era Seville's two greatest champions of the Immaculate Conception, a reputation they began to develop in 16 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tasso, Torquato.
London: John Bill, 1624. Folio (27.9 cm, 11"). Frontis., [24], [390 of 392] pp. (81/82 excised and replaced in facsimile). This influential translation of Tasso's La Gerusalemme liberata "done into English Heroicall verse" by Edward Fairfax (ca. 1580–1635) was much lauded in its day. The epic romance tells a fantastical version of a First Crusade battle between Christians and Muslims over the city of Jerusalem, involving woman warrior Clorinda as well as the titular Godfrey and assorted knights, lovers, witches and mermaids, etc. Fairfax's rather freely interpreted rendition, which Graesse describes as the best translation of Tasso ever done in any language to that point, was the first complete English translation of the work, and was originally published in 1600. It appears here in its second edition, with the frontispiece portrait of Godfrey — not found in all copies — and with an ornate woodcut title-page border incorporating grapevines as well as cherubs and architectural elements.    Provenance: Title-page with early inked inscription: "Phill Wenman"; first page of "The Life of Godfrey of Boulogne" with early inked inscription: "Phi. Wenman his Booke." Frontispiece verso, title-page, and one other page rubber-stamped by the Holbrook Library of the Pacific School of Religion (properly deaccessioned).    Evidence of readership: Intermittent, generally unobtrusive early inked marginal brackets and marks of emphasis, with one annotation reading simply "Milton" (at "Swift from my selfe I run, my selfe I feare, / Yet still my hell within my selfe I beare").         ESTC S117 … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOCCALINI Traiano
Venezia, Giovanni Guerigli, 1624-1616-1616. 3 parti in 2 voll. in-8° grande (22 x 15), di pp. (52)+478; pp. (36)+453+(3); pp. (24)+151. [Click Below for Full Description]

Graziani, Antonio Maria.
Rome, Alessandro Zanetti, 1624. Small folio (184 x 250 mm). (8), 330, (28) pp. Architectural title page engraved (Cl. Mellan sculps.). With woodcut printer's device on final page and several initials, head- and tailpieces. Contemporary full red morocco, lavishly gilt, with the arms of the Barberini family on an inlaid shield of different-coloured leather on both covers. All edges gilt. First edition, dedication copy. - One of the fundamental sources for the Ottoman conquest of Cyprus in 1571, when the Turkish forces invaded the island with 400 ships and some 100,000 men, massacring Nicosia's 20,000 inhabitants. Thus wrested from the Venetians, Cyprus would remain under Ottoman rule until 1878, when it was ceded to Britain as a protectorate; Ottoman sovereignty continued until the outbreak of World War I. - A. M. Graziani (1537-1611) studied the law at Padua before becoming secretary to Pope Sixtus and, in 1592, bishop of Amelia (in Umbria). Pope Clement VIII sent him as his nuncio to the Italian princes and states to unite them in a league against the Ottomans. Graziani having died in 1611, his account was published only posthumously: it was edited by his son Carolo, who dedicated the book to Cardinal Francesco Barberini, nephew of Pope Urban VIII. Barberini was created a cardinal in 1623; in 1627 he became librarian of the Vatican, and in 1632 vice-chancellor. The engraved architectural title (by Claudio Mellan after Antonio Pomeranci) shows History, "magistra vitae", seated atop an elaborate Baroque structure which incorporates Barberini's arms.

(EARLY NEW YORK CITY DOCUMENT - 1640)
NEW AMSTERDAM. New Amsterdam, the forerunner of New York City, was founded in 1624 largely by the Dutch, though it was ethnically diverse (Peter Minuit was German). In May 1624, the ship Nieu Nederlandt, chartered by the West India Company, arrived near Manhattan Island. The vessel had thirty families. A few families were left near New Haven, other people settled near the mouth of the Delaware River, some were left on Governor's Island, and the remaining families sailed up the Hudson River to form Fort Orange (now Albany). Later in 1624 and 1625, six additional ships left Holland with colonists, livestock and supplies. FORT AMSTERDAM. The fort was a stockade built by the Dutch on the southern tip of Manhattan around 1625. It was likely built by slaves and it was to protect the Hudson River from British and French infiltrations. It was torn down in 1790 after the American Revolution. THE WEST INDIA COMPANY (WIC). In 1621, the West India Company was granted a charter for a trade monopoly in the Caribbean, and it operated between West Africa (where it engaged in the slave trade) and the Americas. The company became very important in the Dutch settlement of the Americas. The company established many trade posts and colonies in the 1620s and 1630s. In 1629, the company began selling patroonships in New Netherlands. CORNELIUS VAN TIENHOVEN (1601-1656). Van Tienhoven was the secretary of New Netherlands from 1638 until shortly before his death, and was a very influential man. He served under both Kielt and Peter Stuyvesant. When he caused trouble in New Netherlands, the Dutch West … [Click Below for Full Description]

SANCHEZ, Tomas
Brixiae : Apud Bartholomeum Fontanam, 1624. 1624 Sanchez Marriage Jesuit LAW Sexuality Perversion Forbidden Books! FOLIOS A rare and controversial Catholic work on marriage. Due to the material dealing with sexuality and sexual perversion, this book was put on the Prohibited Book Index. Originally published in 1602, this book went through several editions and languages until the mid-18th-century. Thomas Sanchez, a 16th-century Jesuit, wrote many influential treatises on morality, though ‘Disputationum de Matrimonii’ is by far his most important. This book, ‘On Marriage’ was written in the attempts to surpass previous treatises on marriage and civil law that existed, but the oddities he writes about make it rather polarizing to readers. Sanchez tells of the most intimate secrets of wedlock – lessons on how to use the bride-bed without actually being in the bed! Sanchez also elaborates on the validity of an engagement as it pertains to the commitment to marriage and whether it pertains to consummation. Ultimately, Sanchez wanted to prove that matrimonial law and general contract law were two separate entities. Item number: #2651 Price: $950 SANCHEZ, Tomas Disputationum de S.to matrimonii sacramento : libri decem in tres tomos distributi ; cum triplici indice disputationum. Burton, Robert
Oxford: John Lichfield and James Short for Henry Cripps, 1624. Second Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Corrected and augmented by the author. First Folio Edition of what William Osler referred to as "The Greatest Medical Treatise Written by a Layman." Small Folio. [4], 64, [4], 188, [4], 189-332, [2], 333-557 [i.e., 567], [7]pp. Full modern brown calf. Contemporary ownership signature of an H. Bohun. Burton's name added in a contemporary hand to title, referencing pages 9 &11, with underscoring to text on those leaves. The Anatomy of Melancholy is an especially lengthy book, and the text is divided into three major sections plus an introduction. The first section focuses on the causes and symptoms of “common” melancholies, while the second section deals with cures for melancholy, and the third section explores more complex and arcane melancholies, including the melancholy of lovers and all varieties of religious melancholies. In novel approach, Burton’s Melancholy focused sharply on the self, unlike the writings of his contemporary Bacon. In it, Burton sought to prove indisputable facts by writing lengthy quotations and including passages of Latin poetry. The work becomes a collection of opinions of a multitude of writers, sometimes criticized for being grouped under small and dated divisions. Nevertheless, the subjects discussed and determined by Burton drew from nearly ever science of his age; including psychology and physiology, but also astronomy, meteorology, and theology, and even astrology and demonology. His ideas ranged from the doctrines of religion to military di … [Click Below for Full Description]

Feuillet d'errata (X4). Purchase, Samuel
London: Stansby for Fetherstone, 1624-26. FIRST EDITION of this celebrated collection of travels accounts in English, "one of the fullest and most important collections of early voyages and travels in the English language" (Church). This is the rare first issue of volume I with the engraved title page dated 1624 (usually it is dated 1625) and with the offending passages concerning the Dutch (easily recognized by the presence of the p. 704 headline 'Hollanders lying devices, to disgrace the English," which was then changed to 'Amboyna taken by the Dutch. Ingratitude. Boasting'). This extraordinary undertaking, which extended Hakluyt's Principal Navigations (London, 1598), contains accounts of more than 1200 voyages of discovery and exploration. Many of these accounts were previously unpublished in any language; scores of others are here published for the first time in English. The set includes many of the accounts of the courageous men who had recently explored and begun to settle the New World. Among the hundreds of voyages related are those of Columbus, Da Gama, Cortés, Pizarro, Magellan, and Cabot. English explorations including those of Drake and Hawkins, the Jesuit explorations of China and Japan, the Portuguese voyages to the East Indies, and the explorations of the East India Company. The exploration of the New World is one of the focal points of this set, the greatest English work on exploration of the seventeenth century. Part of volume three and all of volume four are devoted to voyages to America. A CLASSIC OF EXPLORATION LITERATURE. The Age of Exploration contain … [Click Below for Full Description]
