As a grammarian, R. Moses generally followed his father, although his work shows traces of the influence of Abraham ibn Ezra, especially in terminology. He was little concerned with phonology and stressed the morphology of the verb. In Mahalakh Shevilei ha-Da'at, he introduced the use of the root pkd in paradigms and, considering nifal the passive of kal, arranged the conjugations in the order: kal, nifal, pi'el, pu'al, hifil, hofal, po'el, hitpa'el. These innovations became common in later grammars. The Mahalakh was was translated into Latin by Sebastian Muenster under the title Liber viarum linguae … [Click Below for Full Description]

RUSE, Henrick.
First edition of a basic manual on fortification by the Dutch officer Henrick Ruse, or Baron von Rusenstein (1624-1679). He was the first to break with the Dutch tradition in fortification and to introduce new elements based on his personal experiences serving in several armies abroad. Herewith he came into conflict not only with Gerard Melder, the head of the fortifications in the city of Utrecht but also with Freitag in Germany. Melder answered with a manual of his own, and attacked Ruse in his Korte en klare instructie from 1658. Ruse, in his turn, retorted with the Aenwijsinghe der misverstanden van G. Melder, which is added here to the main work.Good copies; ad 1 with old owner's manuscript entry on title-page.l Ad 1: Sloos, Warfare 08034; STCN (2 copies); ad 2: Sloos, Warfare 08039; STCN (3 copies, with slightly different fingerprint); cf. Jähns, pp. 1339-1341 on the works of both Ruse and Melder.

[RODRIGUES GIRÃO, João and Jean VIREAU? (translator)].
[16], 390 pp.Very rare, first and only edition of a translation into French of the "Annual Letter" for 1624, the annual account of the Jesuit missions in Japan written for their superiors in Rome. Although possibly written by Jesuits in Japan, the text was edited by Rodrigues Girão in Macao. First published in its original Italian as a standalone book in 1628, it was immediately translated into Latin, French, Dutch and German. The letter describes the Great Edo Martyrdom of 1623, when 50 Christians were crucified on the orders of the Shogun. Added to that are lives of the principal martyrs and descriptions of previous persecutions of the Christians in Japan, whose religion had officially been banned in 1614. The book ends with various papal letters of support written to the Christians in Japan, which are present both in their original Latin and in French translation. With a library stamp and a manuscript date on the title-page. Some spots and waterstains in the margins, especially in the first 30 pages and some browning; small tear in the final page and stains on the final endpaper. Paste-downs are damaged and loose at several corners and front endpaper is missing. Binding rubbed, particularly on the spine. A good, structurally sound copy.l Alt-Japan-Katalog 1319; De Backer & Sommervogel VI, col. 1973; Cordier, Japonica, col. 311; Lach & Van Kley III, p. 376 & 403; WorldCat (2 copies).

Ouvrage rare.

Oquendo, Antonio de; Iudice [Judice], Nicolas
1624. Memorial asking to punish the Commander of the Treasure Fleet. N.d. [c.1634]. Folio, (295 x 202 mm). 8 ff. Unbound. Fine example, wide margins, and clean paper. 2,600 $ Rare memorial prepared by Nicolas Iudice with regards to the conduct of Don Antonio de Oquendo, and lists his actions, which would be subject to reprimand. Oquendo (1577 – 1640) was a remarkable Spanish Admiral and navigator, son of Miguel de Oquendo, who died during the Armada Invencible campaign against England; after a time working at the Viceroyalty of New Spain, he became Admiral-General of the Ocean Fleet, a position under which Oquendo lead an attack on Pernambuco, to relieve it from the Dutch West India Company, who had taken it the previous year. Iudice was commander of the troops on board the fleet Captained by Oquendo, he “complains of the high-handed action taken by General Antonio de Oquendo, in command of the Galleons, who, in contravention of the King’s decrees and other instructions, had deprived Judice of his command, and subjected him to imprisonment and other indignities at Portobello and Habana; and, by his lack of judgment, lost some vessels off Habana.” (Maggs, VI, 164). The imprint is full of reports of Oquendo´s actions during his period as Admiral of the Fleet in the Caribbean, and thus a significant source of information on Spanish activities in the region. Rare, we could only trace one copy ever offered, by Maggs, in 1927. Not in Palau or Sabin.

Ortelius, Abraham
C1624 Orteliu's famous map of the ancient world This map shows the Indian Ocean as it was known in ancient times and extends from Africa to the East Indies, published in Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. The European desire for a sea route to the Indies in the Middle Ages and early Renaissance coincided with a newly available text titled Geographia by Claudius Ptolemy, a scientist from Alexandria. Ptolemy's influential work, completed circa 150 AD, introduced the concepts of a landlocked Indian Ocean and a southern land named Terra Australis Incognita, which was believed to exist in order to act as a counter weight to the known lands of the Northern Hemisphere. Ptolemy also gave precise coordinates for some 8000 places, many of which were to confound mapmakers for years to come. The inset map in the top left corner depicts the northwest coast of Africa, an area which was first explored by Hanno the Navigator, King of Carthage, who had sailed along the west coast of Africa to reach the Arabian sea. In the top right corner, another inset map named 'Hyper Borei', has been added, as Ortelius wrote, 'for better beautifying or proportioning of this map' and to remind the reader that despite all attempts, a passage to the far East via the North Pole had not yet been discovered by the English or the Dutch. The inset map lower centre illustrates 'The wandering of Ulysses.' References: Broecke 225. 360mm x 465mm (14.17" x 18.31") Date: 1601 (1624)

Lara, Rodrigo de
Juan Delgado, Madrid, 1624. First edition. Bifolio. (4) p. First edition of this scarce, Spanish, first-hand account about the first phase of the Siege of Breda, a significant battle of the Thirty (and Eighty) Years' War, whose end was immortalized by Velázquez's famous paintingThe Surrender of Breda (Las lanzas). The letter gives eyewitness information about the first months of the Spanish efforts in the Siege of Breda, led by Ambrogio Spinola, and about the successful driving off of the Dutch relief army under the leadership of Maurice of Nassau. Not much is known about Rodrigo de Lara, the author of the report, who must have been accompanying the troops as a secretary or in some such role, and who - as he refers in the text - updated Madrid about former encounters of the Spanish armies with the Protestants in Central Europe too (Espejo, Baena; p. 209). The text was published first in Madrid in the present publication, and very soon it was copied in Seville by Juan de Cabrera (USTC 5023741) and in Barcelona by Jaime Matevad (USTC 5023742). Scarce.

1624. (10), 1040 pp. description of France, revised and enlarged by the author's son, François Du Chesne, arranged by provinces, (25) pp. index. Some moderate staining and toning throughout, some spots of damp-staining to title page and approximately first 30 pages. 8vo. Vellum. Light soiling, vellum has stiffened and volume no longer closes all the way or opens flat. Paris (Petit-pas) 1624. Identical to the 1648 edition which is, according to Dufour's bibliography of Paris, the best edition of the voluminous work that begins with a description of the capital and her region allegedly taken from Belleforest's "Cosmographie." In spite of this, the author, court historiographer to Louis XIV, has been called "the father of French history."

Barker (Peter)
Printed by J. Beale? for Roger Iackson, 1624. FIRST EDITION, title within border of printer's ornaments, woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces, cut close at the top with the loss of some entire headlines, but no loss of actual text, a little browned, smudge on title obscuring last 2 numerals of date, pp. [xii], 316, small 4to, contemporary panelled calf, rebacked (not very sympathetically), corners repaired. Barker was 'preacher of Gods word, at Stowre Paine, in Dorsetshire'. For a discussion of this book see Jonathan Willis, Moral Arithmetic, in Sin and Salvation in Reformation England, Ashgate, 2015. Willis notes that for Barker 'Adultery [is] the headline offence', and it is remarkable how thorough are the disquisitions on all things marital. Willis also remarks on the vigour of Barker's prose. A poorly printed book, and a scarce one, with ESTC listing 6 copies in the British Isles, and 4 in the US (Folger, Pittsburg, Illinois, Minnesota). (ESTC S114093) [Attributes: First Edition]
