MARTIAL [Marcus Valerius MARTIALIS].
MARTIAL [Marcus Valerius MARTIALIS]. Epigrammaton libri, animadversi, emendati, et commentariolus luculenter explicati. Sedan, Jean Jannon, 1624. 8vo. 17th-century calf with raised bands, spine lettered and ornamented in gilt, coverls with gilt-ruled double-fillets; pp. [viii], 342, woodcut printer's device to title, a few woodcut head-pices and initials; binding worn, but stable, a few faint marginal waterstains, otherwise a very good and still crisp copy; early 18th-century French ownership inscriptions and one armorial seal to title.First Jannon edition. Printed in the independent (up to 1651) Protestant Principality of Sedan in the Ardennes, close to the modern French border with Belgium, this collection of verses by the greatest Latin epigrammatist is a sensational achievement of French typography and Protestant book production. In 1610 the Parisian master printer Robert III Estienne recommended the printer, librarian and typecutter Jean Jannon to the Prince of Sedan as a talented and Protestant man of the book. Sedan developed into an academy of Protestant erudition with an impressive collection of printed books, manustcripts and works of art. Jannon began to print academic theses, classics and religious works, whilst designing and cutting types in Latin, Greek, Hebrew and Syriac. The type used here, la petite sedanoise, as it became known later, after it had been pirated by a Parisian typecutter, was the smallest type created since the invention of printing. It measures a mere 4.9 points. Jannon reserved this particular type solely for his own use and did not sell it … [Click Below for Full Description]

Small folio; [8] pp. An early 17th Century panegyric to the Spanish State and Nobility, published in the first year of the Empire's decline Philip IV and the early stages or the thirty years' war. The author, Andres de Almansa y Mendoza introduces the text with a brief letter, signed in print Madrid, i n November, 3, 1624. The text, itself, praises Spain for its adherence to Catholicism, contrasting the nation to its French, English and German rivals, and names scores of recently elected Ministers to the State. Almansa published numerous articles and letteres between 1621 and 1626 and in widely considered to have been Spain's first professional journalist. Although he signed hes name "Andres de Mendoça" (as in the present example) to suggest a noble background, his origins were obscure and his formal education limited, through his travels and dispatches on contemporary events, however, Almansa was able to rise to an unusual position os access to Spains's most prominent families and figures, insluding the Duke of Medina Sidonia, to whom this document is addressed, Juan Manuel de Guzman de Bueno, 8th Duke of Medina Sidonia, was the son of Alonso de Guzman el Bueno, the Commander-in Chief of the Spanish Armada, the Dukes of Medina Sidonia are ancient grandees of Spain and represent the oldest Dukedom in the Kingdom. Lannel, Jean de
Chez Tuossainct du Bray, rue Sainct Jacques, aux Epics-meurs, A Paris. First edition. In 18th century leather. Spine with five raised bands, compartments with gilt ornament and title. Edges tinted in red and brown. Woodcut initials and headpieces. (16), 1115, (3 [last 2 blank]) p. Collation: á8, A-Z8, Aa-Zz8, Aaa-Yyy8 [last leaf blank]. First edition of Lannel's scarce and most important work. A social satire about the disorders and corruption of the early seventeenth century France. Jean de Lannel (around 1590-1630) was a minor however important French writer of the early seventeenth century. Very little is known about his life, Lannel received Jesuit education, studied law, and around 1608 he entered the service of the Duc de Brissac as court secretary, later the Duc de Lorraine (to whom Le romant satyrique is dedicated). (Hardee, 1967) The present book was published in 1624 and subsequently republished in the following year, however with major changes both in the names of characters and the scene which is replaced to India thus the title was revised too to Le Romant des Indes. Le romant satyrique is Lannel's most important work, an extensive narrative in which a large number of personages, from a variety of social s … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pindar; Pindarus; Estienne, Henri, editor
Ybrodun: Societas Helvetica Caldoriana, 1624. Ybrodun: Societas Helvetica Caldoriana. Good with no dust jacket. 1624. Leather. Full leather in a beautiful and sympathetic rebinding. With side by side Greek and Latin translations, edited by Henri Estienne. This is a scarce, charming small pocket 24mo edition of Pindar's Odes, edited by the celebrated scholar/printer Henri Estienne. Its printing history is a bit obscure – it calls itself the 6th edition (it may be a pirate edition) and according to Ebert, it is a reprint of the 1600 P. Stephanus edition – which is itself a reprint of the 1566 Estienne second edition. It is quite scarce – WorldCat shows only one copy and that one in Durham, UK. We can find no copies anywhere for sale. This scarce and attractive book is in good antiquarian condition. Rebound in sympathetic modern leather with blind ruling, gilt to the spine, covers are clean and unmarked, very nice. End papers renewed with a period marble, title page quite browned and chipped and laid down with some losses (see photo). Last leaf has darkening around the edges and a small chip in the margin. Otherwise text is a bit age darkened but otherwise clean and unmarked. A few nice little engraved head or tail pieces. The book is a 24mo in 8s measuring 2.75” x 4.75” . Pagination is 387 [3] 387-684 pp with continuous pagination throughout. There is a divisional page reading “Carminum poetarum novem…” at the 387 page, followed by a leaf mis-signed B2 instead of Bb4. OCLC 912959175. Printing was done in Switzerland in Ybrodun by the Societas Helvet … [Click Below for Full Description]
