SKINNER, John].
- ESTC S100292; Knuttel 4205a; cf. Ogborn, Indian Ink, pp. 120-129. Rare third edition of an account of the "Amboyan massacre". In 1623 the Dutch governor of the island of Amboina had executed 20 men, among them 10 English merchants and factors in service of the English East India Company, the Dutch company's rival in the spice trade. The men were accused of treason against the Dutch governor, and after confession (partly obtained by torture) they were sentenced to death and subsequently beheaded. The English East India Company instructed John Skinner to produce the present account, which was first published in 1624 and is sometimes ascribed to Sir Dudley Digges. Included is an English translation by J. Wing of a Dutch narration of the event (originally published as Waerachtich verhael vande tidingen gecomen wt de Oost-Indien), followed by the English refutation. The pamphlet was reprinted several times and it would play an important role in the outbreak of the first Anglo-Dutch war in 1652, as Cromwell referred to the incident in his declaration of war.Heavily browned and the first leaves waterstained, mounted and shaved. Rebacked, with the original backstrip laid down. A fair copy.

Willem BLAEU (1571 Ð 1638). Amsterdam, 1623. Copper engraving with modern ouline colour (Very Good), 26 x 35 cm (10 x 14 inches).
- This attractive sea chart features the central coast of Portugal, including Lisbon and the Tagus Estuary, the coast running over to Cascais, and the Setœbal area. The city of Lisbon is portrayed pictorially, as are the saltpans near Setœbal. Both the mileage bars and the title are framed in fine baroque style cartouches. The present chart was part of Willem BlaeuÕs highly important and commercially successful sea atlas, Zeespiegel (1623), which was a vastly enlarged successor of his Het Licht der Zee-vaert (1608). Given LisbonÕs global prominance as a port, this chart was one of the most important components of the atlas. The Zeespiegel remained the ultimate guide to navigation in Europe for some years and was no way superseded until the publication of Jacob Aertsz. ColomÕs De Vyerighe Colom (Amsterdam, 1632). The Blaeu Family: The Leading Cartographers of the 17th Century Willem Jansz Blaeu (1571-1638) was, more than any other figure, responsible for the ascension of Dutch cartography to a globally dominant position. Blaeu, originally from Alkmaar, north of Amsterdam, got his start while serving as an apprentice to the legendary Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe at his observatory of Uranienborg, from 1594 to 1596. Upon WillemÕs return to the Netherlands, he started a business making charts, globes and nautical instruments. His timing was impeccable, as the Dutch economy, based on maritime trade, was booming and there was an insatiable demand for high quality sea charts and nautical kit. Notably, in 1596, the Dutch made their first voyage to the East Indies, which … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

MERCATOR and HONDIUS.
Amsterdam: 1623. Engraved double-page portrait, 475 x 545 mm., hand-coloured; mounted and framed. Fine double portrait of two great cartographers, Gerard Mercator and Jodocus Hondius, which appeared as the frontispiece of the Mercator Atlas sive Cosmographicae meditationes published by Hondius' son in Amsterdam in 1623. This handsome portrait shgows the two men each holding a pair of dividers, poised over table globes surrounded by reference books, with a chart of the known world as a backdrop. They are framed by an impressive architectural border topped by globes, slide rules and charts.Gerardus Mercator (1512-1594), scientific cartographer, skilful engraver, commercial publisher, was one of the greatest names in late 16th century cartography. Jodocus Hondius (1563-1611), or Hondius the elder, the 17th century engraver, purchased Mercator's copper map plates in 1606 and began publication of this most famous of early atlases. Very good.

Mr William Shakespeare
Recent full calf leather binding blind tooled in the Cambridge payne panel style - sympathetically bound in antique style - contents show some age toning with some marginal chipping to the text block - light occasional foxing [brown spot marks] some old ink splashes to some pages - some contemporary notes tipped in with a page of manuscript bound in before the frontis -The manuscript text explains that despite when collated this reprint had no less than 348 errors / deviations - they appear to be creditable; chiefly literal errors transposed letters c for e etc - concluding this reprint is therefore 'really good' and has been unjustly depreciated as a consequence of the identified but unqualified 'errors'. Shakespeare wrote around 37 plays, 36 of which are contained in the First Folio. Most of these plays were performed in the Globe, an open-air playhouse in London built on the south bank of the Thames in 1599. As none of Shakespeare's original manuscripts survive (except, possibly, Sir Thomas More, which Shakespeare is believed to have revised a part of) we only know his work from printed editions. It is estimated around 750 First Folios were printed, of which 233 are currently known to survive worldwide.

Pascal, Blaise
8, 20 Bl., 613 S., OPerg. m. handschriftl. Rückentitel., Das Werk erschien anonym in Bruxelles bei E.-H. Fricx. - Brunet IV, 396. Tchemerzine IX, 70.

per Pietro Paolo Tozzi, in Padova, 1623. 5 parti in un vol. in-4° (215x145mm), pp. (8), 222; 64; 147, (1); 40; (14); legatura coeva in p. pergamena rigida con titolo in oro su tassello al dorso. 4 frontespizi con vignetta incisa su rame. Ritratti xilografici a p. pag. dell'autore e del Cardinal d'Este. Numerosissime incisioni xilografiche n.t. di raffigurazioni fisiognomiche, molto spesso consistenti in comparazioni fra fisionomie umane e fisionomie animali. Sguardie rinnovate. Qualche leggero alone.
