Ramírez Carrillo, Alonso.
1621. Detailed here is the last will and testament of the choir master of Popayán, Colombia. Ramírez was an absentee office holder, for he lived in Peñafiel, Spain, indulged in this failure to take up his duties in the New World by the bishop of Popayán -- who happened to be his uncle. The choir master's wealth was considerable and while not itemized as in an estate inventory, it is more than hinted at via the bequests here of real estate (with provenance), of silver and gold chalices and crosses, and of cash in the form of coin. The bequests also give an interesting picture of the size of his family and the ranking of nieces, nephews, etc. Certified, contemporary copy of the original.

BORCHT, Willem van der (Guilielmus a CASTRO).
Bibl. Belg I, p. 319; BCNI 9630; Funck, pp. 282-283; STCV (8 copies incl. 4 incomplete). First edition, in Flemish Dutch, of a didactic satire, mostly in verse, by the Flemish poet and lawyer Willem van der Borcht or Guilelmus a Castro (1621/22-1668) in Brussels, with elegies and epigrams alternating with prose passages. It allegorically presents a mirror of self-knowledge and knowledge of the world, intended to improve the faults of the age and show the foolishness and vanity of the world. The fine plates by Antoine van der Does, showing scenes of rich and frivolous society, are of interest for the costume and morals of the time. The "Toe-ghifte", an integral part of the edition, but with its own title-page on 2D1, represents the world as a capricious woman. The portrait shows Van der Borcht at age 21 with the motto "nosce te ipsum", and a 2-line verse by Ericus Puteanus below. The 3 illustrations show realistic genre scenes, influenced by Rubens. Half the copies listed by the STCV lack the portrait and/or the engraved title-page. One illustration was printed over a crease in the paper, leaving a white line through part of the scene. In very good condition, with a minor water stain in the head margin of the engraved title, just touching its border. Binding lacking ties, with 1 sewing support broken at the back hinge, slightly wrinkled and a bit dirty, but still good. First edition of a satire of society, with plates made for it by Antoine van der Does.

PUGET, Louis de.
Blake, p. 365; BMC NH, p. 1621; Cole Library 1190; Hagen, p. 54; Horn & Schenkling 17511; for Puget and Lamy: NBG XLI, col. 177 & XXIX, cols. 298-300. First and only edition of well-illustrated observations on the structure of insect (and crayfish) eyes and a butterfly proboscis by a pioneer of French microscopy. It begins with two letters written by Puget to the Benedictine scientist François Lamy (1626-1711) in 1704, followed by 59 pages explaining the figures in the plates in great detail. The figures include original-size and microscopic (about 300x) views of the eyes of a crayfish, dragonfly and butterfly, as well as a butterfly proboscis and its interior structure.Although Robert Hooke had published his microscopic views of insects and other things in his 1665 Micrographia, little progress was made in the improvement of the microscope until the introduction of achromatic lenses in the mid-18th century. Puget (1629-1709), like Leeuwenhoek in Holland, therefore had to compensate for the limitations of his equipment with a keen sense of observation, insight and natural curiosity, experimenting, for example with a candle flame and other images reflected in the compound eyes. Unlike Leeuwenhoek, he came from a wealthy family and was able to acquire microscopes and devote his leisure time to scientific studies, and he helped to establish the Lyon Académie des Sciences. The present work forms his most important contribution to science. With some contemporary manuscript corrections. In very good condition, with only an occasional minor spot in the text and a few faint marginal … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sheets, Millard
Santa Monica, CA.: ca. 1960s. Watercolor painting. 15.5 x 40 inches. Design for the building at 1621 Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica, CA. Subsequently Continental Shop/ Nawab of India. Adam Arenson: "a delicately curving building at 1619-1621 Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica. The color logo tiles and the terrazzo floors being the best hints at this building's Mid-Century Modern past -- given that the inside spaces were long since gutted. Note also the alley-side view in the picture above: for a building not on a prominent corner, the marble siding stopped when the facade did. 1957, photo 2012 The tile logo letters show an attempt, contemporaneous to the Home Savings work, to find a quick, recognizable way to mark the business with a colorful, artistic icon -- closer to the style of abstracted corporate icons for franchise recognizability.

Martial (Marcus Valerius Martialis)
Amsterdam: Apud Guihelm Ianssonium, 1621. Very good antiquarian condition. 32mo. (113 x 58 mm). 318 pp. including engraved title-page depicting cupids and satyrs. Contemporary Parisian binding by the Atelier Mace Ruette: red morocco elegantly gilt with superb assurance, centers inlaid with olive morocco, five raised bands on spine (beautifully rebacked), comb-marbled endpapers and pastedowns (marbling abraded inside front hinge; inscription on verso of front endpaper erased), ruled in red throughout, a.e.g. Fine contemporary Parisian binding, securely attributable to the Atelier Mace Ruette. Our example is gilt with the same tools and identical design as Esmerian (2nd sale) no. 8 (Smith, De Republica Anglorum, 1625) and No. 11 (Emmius, Graecorum Respublicae, 1632), both of which were printed by Elzevier, and bound by Ruette for H.-L. Habert de Montmort, Conseiller au Parlement de Paris. Mace Ruette (1584-1638) apprenticed to Dominique Salie and by 1606 he had opened his own shop. In 1629 he was appointed "administrateur de la Confrerie des libraires, imprimeurs et relieurs," which he served until 1634, at which time he succeeded Clovis Eve as "relieur ordinaire du Roi." Ruette was also a publisher of equal distinction, but he is best known as a binder who began experimenting with pointille tooling ca. 1620, a style of decoration that was to become a major feature of French bindings for decades. Upon Ruette's death in 1638 the post of "relieur du Roi" passed to his son Antoine. AGRICOLA, Georgius
Basil: Ludovici Regis, 1621. Third Latin Edition. Hardcover. Very Good in a serviceable binding. Folio (8" x 12-1/2") bound in library buckram; irregularly paginated: [10], 502, [58] pages. Illustrated with 273 woodcuts, many full and half page, some signed with the monogram "RMD," and generally attributed to Hans Rudolf Manuel Deutsch (fl.1525-1572) or, less commonly, Blasius Weffring. Previously published in 1556 and 1561, this edition seems scarcer than either of the previous. PRINTING & THE MIND OF MAN 79: "The first systematic treatise on mining and metallurgy and one of the first technological books of modern times." Herbert Hoover, who first translated this book into English, described this title in his autobiography as "the first important attempt to assemble systematically in print the world-knowledge on mining, metallurgy, and industrial chemistry. It was the great textbook of those industries for two centuries and had dominated thought and practice all that time. In many mining regions and camps, including the Spanish South America, it was chained to the church altar and translated by the priest to the miners between religious services." The book combines a profound technical and financial knowledge of mining with an underlying interest in the health and daily routine of mine workers. The woodcut impressions are strong and dark. As customary with this title, there is browning throughout, occasionally heavy. Small piece of title page repaired with no loss of text or illustration; ink names of David Stuart dated 1771 and Joseph Robertson dated 1830 on title page. L … [Click Below for Full Description]

GOMIZUNOO, Emperor (reigned 1611-29)
78 parts plus table of contents bound in 15 vols. (full collation supplied in the Hyde catalogue). Large 8vo (286 x 215 mm.), paper wrappers, new stitching. [Japan]: Chokuban or Chokuhan [privately published by the Emperor's order], 1621. First edition and a fine set of one of the very few surviving "imperial editions" printed with movable type in Japan. This enormous publication, by far the largest of the eight surviving "chokuhan" (imperial printings) and the only surviving "gen'na chokuhan" (imperial printing during the reign of Emperor Gomizunoo) is of very great rarity. The production of this large work was a very complex and difficult project, employing the recently imported technology of movable type from Korea. The author Sahoyu Jiang (active 1360-68), compiled this collection of the writings of Chinese courtly scholars. Encouraging the preservation of Chinese traditions long valued by aristocrats, Emperor Gomizunoo continued his father's project of printing volumes of literary classics with the present work, a collection of Confucian texts which were considered both an ethical and a literary legacy of the court. Today, this edition is the earliest record of this collection as earlier Chinese printed editions are now lost. "The earliest surviving books printed [in Korea] with movable type date from the late fourteenth century...During the invasion of the Korean peninsula undertaken by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the closing years of the sixteenth century...large numbers of printed books were looted, and printing type was removed from the Printing Office and taken to Japan … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jacques CALLOT
"Acquaforte originale. "Etching, from the series ""Les Caprices"", Nancy edition. Work in the first state of two, before the adding of the numbers. The fifty plates (including a title and a dedication) of Les Caprices were engraved by Callot intwo series A first series was engraved on relatively soft copper plates, in Florence on 1617. Callot engraved a second 'Capricci' series when he came back to Nancy (1621) using hard copper plates. The two series are almost identical and many sets today actually mix plates from both series. The most obvious difference is that the plates from the Nancy series were numbered in the second state." Lieure 221,435.1; Meaume 782,783
