La Fontaine, Jean de
Set of four hardcovers with leather spines and paper covered boards. The spines are divided in six shields of which the second shield shows the gilded title on a red background and the fourth the volume. The mock ribs are decorated with a gilded pattern. Each volume contains an ex libris (Dr. O.H. Dijkstra). The spines of volume two and four are slightly loose at the top. The corners of all the books are a bit worn. Overall the books are in good condition (no foxing). Rare edition. 13 x 21 cm, vol. 1. [4] 1-208 pp., vol. 2. [4] 209-450 pp., vol. 3. [4] 451-676 pp., vol. 4. [4] 677-916 pp. The books are illustrated and engraved by J. Punt and Vinkeles (each story is accompanied by an engraving). The French author Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695) was one of the most influential fable writers of all time. Although his stories are loosely based on the work of old masters like Aesopus and Phaedrus, they were of such quality that they became immensely popular. De la Fontaine belonged to the so called Classicists, which meant that he took his inspiration from Greek and Roman antiquity. These views made him an opponent of Charles Perrault (1628-1703), the other famous story writer of the time, who thought that modern literature was superior to that of the olden days. The illustrations of Jan Punt (1711-1779) and Reinier Vinkeles (1741-1816) are a beautiful replenishment to the text of La Fontaine. Vinkeles, who was the student of Punt, outshined his master later in life with his close to nature engravings.

Tabourot (known as Le Seigneur des Accords), a talented lawyer, friend of Montaigne and Pasquier, and 'juge châtelain de la baronnie de Verdun en Bourgogne', spent ten years before his appointment broadening his mind at the University in Paris and in traveling. He published a number of works, among them a revised edition of his uncle Jehan Le Fèvre's works. MONTAGUE, Richard
Felix Kyngston for Matthew Lownes, London 1621 - FIRST EDITION 4to. pp. (xii) 579 (i). Roman letter, some Italic and Greek. Woodcut initials, ornaments and head- and tail-pieces. C19 armorial bookplate of Earls of Macclesfield to front pastedown, their armorial blimdstamp to first few leaves. A little printer's ink streaking to one page. A very good, clean copy in comtemp. limp vellum, ms title to spine, remains of leather ties. First edition of this lengthy and detailed attack on John Selden's 1618 History of Tythes, by the sometimes controversial cleric and scholar Richard Montague (or Montagu, c.1575-1641). Montague, educated at Eton and Cambridge, became chaplain to James I (to whom the present work is dedicated), Bishop of Chichester in 1628 and of Norwich in 1638. He disliked the extremes of both Calvinism and Romanism, a position which did little to ingratiate him with either group: he became embroiled in a bitter rhetorical exchange with the Catholic theologian Matthew Kellison (c.1560-1642), and his publication of the Immediate Addresse unto God alone (1624) incensed Puritans, who appealed to the House of Commons. Montague was protected by his connections to the King. Selden had attempted to demonstrate, with his usual wealth of learning, that tithes were an historical development and not established iure divino. Any attempt to counter Selden's arguments might have been considered foolhardy, given the great jurist's formidable reputation as a scholar and historian, but three concerted responses were produced not long after the work's publication (as recorded by Woo … [Click Below for Full Description]

MONTAGU, Richard
London, by Felix Kyngston for Matthew Lownes, 1621. 4to, (12) + 579 + (1)pp, complete with the initial blank, one or two minute wormholes in upper margins rarely touching a printed letter, contemporary calf, the sides panelled in gilt with fleur de lys in the corners, flat spine with simple gilt lines, all edges gilt, remains of original silk ties. From the library of John Sparrow with his book label> on front pastedown. First and only edition. STC 18037. Kress 381. Goldsmiths 504. Sweet & Maxwell I, p.193(35). Richard Montagu (1577-1641) is well known to historians for his scurrilous and indiscreet letters to John Cosin, describing the ecclesiastical faction-fighting of the 1620s in rich detail. Montagu had a nice line in personal invective, well brought out in the present work, written in response to John Selden's Historie of Tithes>. Montagu begins with a 135-page epistle addressed 'To Master John Selden' in person. Although he was unable to fault Selden's scholarship, he questioned his motives for writing the Historie of Tithes> and accused him of having stolen some of his references from Sir Robert Cotton. Lowndes notes that the Diatribae> was written, according to Moore in his Memoirs of Captain Rock>, in a 'tessellated' style. 'In his Diatribae upon the first part of the late History of Tithes>, 1621, 4to, [Montagu] entered directly into one of the most popular controversies of the day. This work, dedicated to the King, was an attempt to beat Selden with his own weapons of philological and classical learning. 'Tithes are due by divine right' (p. … [Click Below for Full Description]

When Kepler originally published Prodromus Dissertationum Cosmographicarum, continens Mysterium Cosmographicum as a defence against Fludd in 1596, it "was the first unabashedly Copernican treatise since De Revolutionibus itself . . . Kepler argued that the sun's centrality was essential, for the sun itself must provide the driving force to keep the planets in motion . . . although the principal idea of the Mysterium Cosmographicum was erroneous, Kepler established himself as the first, and until Descartes the only, scientist to demand physical explanations for celestial phenomena. Seldom in history has so wrong a book been so seminal in directing the future course of science" (DSB … [Click Below for Full Description]
