LASTMAN, Cornelis Jansz.
Bierens de Haan 2687; Crone Library 282 (incomplete?); STCN (1 incompl. copy); WorldCat (4 copies, incl. the same incompl. copy); cf. Cat NHSM, pp. 665, 667 & 672; Davids, zeewezen, passim. Newly revised and expanded edition of Lastman's very rare best-selling practical handbook of navigation, first published in 1621 as Schat-kamer des grooten seevaertskunst and almost entirely revised in 1642 with the title: Kunst der stuerluyden . At least six edition appeared between 1642 and 1675, all very rare (only 1 or 2 copies of each are recorded in the STCN).Shipping, navigation and trade played a central role in the Dutch golden age in the 17th century. The VOC (Dutch East India Company), established in 1602, brought Dutch or Dutch-financed ships to all parts of the globe. This required both advances in the art of navigation and the communication of navigation skills to a much larger public. The successful end of the Netherlands' Eighty-Years' War of independence from Habsburg Spain in 1648, meant that numerous sailors would be coming home from the war and many would seek work in the VOC, WIC (Dutch West India Company) and other commercial trading ships, which set a high value on navigational skills. Even though the Netherlands had one of the highest literacy rates in the world, the sailors who needed to or wished to learn navigation were not always well-educated, so practical guides assuming little knowledge of mathematics were essential. A minor dampstain in the foot margin of the first 100 pages, some leaves slightly browned, pp. 133-134 with the lower right corner torn off (n … [Click Below for Full Description]

FERNÁNDEZ DE NAVARRETE, Pedro.
Barcelona, Por Sebastian de Cormellas, 1621. 4°, early limp vellum (stained, loosening). Text within a double-rule border. A few faint stains. In fine condition. Inscription in ink on title-page by Dr. Schonleben for the Graf von Auersperg, dated 1656. Bookplate of the Auersperg collection. (2), 80 ll., with numerous errors in foliation. *** FIRST EDITION, with references to the Americas and a discussion of the impact of overseas possessions on domestic policy. The author comments at length on a consulta of the Real Consejo de Castilla that had been written by Diego del Coral y Arellano. The consulta dealt with the marked decline in the population of Castile, and made brief recommendations on how to change that trend. Fernández de Navarrete elaborates on these measures, which included cutting taxes, decreasing the number of people at Court who were exempt from taxation, reducing the Court's expenditures, allowing fewer religious houses to be established, and setting a minimum age for entering religious orders. These suggestions were further developed in the author's Conservacion de monarquias, Madrid, 1626. Fernández de Navarrete was a canon of Santiago de Compostela and royal chaplain and secretary; he also published translations of Seneca. According to the letter from Miguel de Prats to Fernández de Navarrete that serves as a preface to this volume, the Discursos were published without the author's knowledge. Prats, a protégé of Fernández de Navarrete's brother Alfonso (who died a martyr in Japan), found a manuscript of the work in the luggage of a man who had died in Bar … [Click Below for Full Description]

MUN, THOMAS
London: Nicholas Okes for John Pyper. FIRST EDITION. Mun served on the board of the East India Company from 1615 until his death in 1641. This is his first publication. In the Discourse on Trade (1621), Mun defends the company against charges of depleting England’s bullion stock—and thus its wealth—by sending it to the East Indies in exchange for goods. Mun, also known for England’s Treasure by Foreign Trade, published in 1664, years after his death, was the leading theorist of mercantilism. In the Discourse, Mun argued that the temporary export of gold and silver resulted in a net expansion of wealth through the growth of international trade. In Mun’s view, the trading universe was essentially a coherent and mutually supporting community. Too much frugality at home would restrict foreign purchases of English good, he warned, for if the English did not use foreign goods, foreigners would not have the wherewithal to buy English ones and there would be no sale abroad. . . [Mun presents a] succinct and compelling explanation of the dynamics of growth through commercial expansion” (Appleby, Economic Thought and Ideology in 17th-Century England). VERY RARE. No copies appear in the auction records since 1979. This is one of a handful of copies to appear for sale in this century. Mun’s Discourse is bound with 3 other rare 17th-century tracts on trade: “the earliest example of corporation publicity” WHEELER, JOHN. KEPLER, Johannes
sumptibus Godefridi Tampachii. THE FOUNDATIONS OF MODERN SCIENCE 8vo. pp [ii] 419-932 [xvi] 17-418 [xviii]. Roman and Italic letter, some Greek, woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces, astronomical and geometrical diagrams and illustrations throughout, outer leaf of synoptic table missing (trimmed to binding). Mostly marginal wormtrail to first gathering without loss, poor quality paper with intermittent foxing and age browning, a good, unrestored well-margined copy bound in original vellum fragment of C15th antiphonal leaf in red, blue, and brown ink. Ex dono of Joannes Moeri to the Jesuit College at [?], 1668 on first t.p. FIRST EDITION of Books 1-3 and 5-7, second edition of Book 4, in its entirety one of Kepler's most influential works and the first complete manual of astronomy constructed according to new principles, published as an inexpensive octavo textbook for students in question-and-answer format. It contains Kepler's three laws of planetary motion around the Sun, arguing that heavenly bodies travelled in elliptical orbits at varying speeds rather than fixed circular orbits, and in short, making the Copernican system "nearly 100 times more accurate"(DSB). The principles here would form the theoretical basis for Newton's law of universal gravitation nearly a century later: his Principia (1687) was first introduced to the Royal Society as "a mathematical demonstration of the Copernican hypothesis as proposed by Kepler". The first three books outline the mechanics of the earth's motion - which Galileo focused on in his Dialogo (1632). This controversial subject wou … [Click Below for Full Description]

Eglises réformées de France. Assemblée générale (1620-21, La Rochelle, France).
Par Pierre Pié de Dieu, 1621. News reaching England relating to the many and diverse French religious wars had a strong following in that Protestant kingdom and this pamphlet from the very beginning of the so-called Rohan wars was immediately translated into English (The Declaration of the Reformed Churches of France and the Soueraigntie of Bearn. Of their Vniust persecution by the Enemies of the State and their Religion. And of their Lawfull and Necessarie Defence). In either language, it relates to the Béarn case (1617-20) where Louis XIII in 1620 militarily occupied Pau and replaced the Béarn council (composed solely of Protestants) with a parliament where only Catholics sat; he also restored Catholic worship. => The Huguenots rebelled and this is one of the first publications from their press in their defense. This is the first edition in octavo format, the issue in 58 pp.
