Littleton, Sir Thomas
1621. Littleton's Tenures in English Littleton, Sir Thomas [1402-1481]. Littletons Tenures in English, Lately Perused and Amended. London: Printed for the Companie of Stationers, 1621. 142, [2] ff. Octavo (5-1/2" x 3-1/2"). Recent period-style calf, blind rules to boards, raised bands, blind ornaments and lettering piece to spine, edges rouged, endpapers renewed. Moderate toning, light browning to margins, early inkstains and annotations to margins of a few leaves, soiling, some edgewear and owner signature (of John Blome/ 2 August 1644) to title page. ,250. * Later edition. Written during the reign of Edward IV [1442-1483] and first published around 1481, Littleton's Tenures is probably the most revered treatise in the history of the common law. Much admired for its learning and style, it is concerned with tenures and other issues relating to real property. This venerable work, which Coke called "the ornament of the Common Law, and the most perfect and absolute work that ever was written in any humane science," is considered a landmark because it renounced the principles of Roman law (and Latin) in favor of guidelines and doctrines drawn from the Year Books and, when necessary, hypothetical cases. The first dated English translation was published in 1538. OCLC locates 6 copies worldwide of the 1621 edition, and 3 in law libraries (Yale, U. Penn, U. Texas). Holdsworth, A History of English Law II:573. English Short-Title Catalogue S895.

BMN I, p. 377; Krivatsy 12484; KVK & WorldCat (2 copies); STCN (2 copies). Fourth(?) edition of a very rare anonymous medical guide with 639 numbered entries, most of them discussing a particular ailment and recommending a medicine and/or other treatment. At the end is an alphabetical index of the ailments. All editions are rare. The Dutch title can be translated as "Princely gift, or: A medicine book" and the title-pages give some information about its origin. They say the book has been held in esteem by the House of Nassau in general and the Prince of Orange in particular. The printer's note to reader in 1621 says that "respected professors" provided these recipes for the noble houses of the Princes of Nassau, who have found them highly beneficial and preserve them as precious jewels. With the corner of one leaf burnt off, affecting a few words of text, and ink marks or dirt on an occasional leaf, but otherwise in good condition, with only an occasional minor marginal defect. The binding is rather dirty, with a small chip at the head of the spine and the sewing somewhat loose.

RAPIN, René.
First edition of a poem in praise of gardens and garden art in the age of Louis XIV, written in Latin verse in the manner of Virgil's Georgics by the French Jesuit René Rapin (1621-1687), tutor to the children of the dedicatee Guillaume de Lamoignon. Louis XIV began the work of transforming the old royal hunting lodge at Versailles into his royal palace in 1661 and was not to complete the first phase until 1678, so Rapin's work both reflected its influence and influenced both the palace itself and the fashion for garden art internationally. The poem itself is divided into four books, the first devoted primarily to flower gardens in the first decade of the 17th-century, particularly in France under Henry IV and his queen Maria de' Medici. While this book mostly follows tradition concerning the construction of gardens and myths about various flowers themselves, the second book on parks and trees introduces new ideas where the garden becomes a stage that transports one into a formally arranged world of geometrical patterns, mazes and meticulously trimmed hedges to display the gardener's art. Curiously Rapin exempts the oak from this rigour of clipping, for it represents the natural forest. The third book is devoted to the use of water, again with an emphasis on artifice: fountains, cascades and other waterworks. The final book is devoted to orchards. The poem itself is followed by a prose debate between the ancients and moderns on garden design, where Rapin supports the modern notions. The book closes with notes on classical Greek sources for elements in the four books, … [Click Below for Full Description]

HONDIUS, Henricus.
Rare first edition (the only edition in the original Dutch) of a richly illustrated work on the pioneering Dutch "scientific" approach to the military "arts", published soon after the resumption of the Eighty Years' War for Dutch independence from Spain at the end of the Twelve Years' Truce (1621). It was written by the cartographer, engraver and mathematician Henricus Hondius (1573-1649) in The Hague, not related to the Hondius family in Amsterdam. The text is divided into four parts, treating fortification, heavy artillery, light artillery and finally logistics, practical engineering and pyrotechnics. It stands out as a work directly aimed at the practice in the field, and is based on warfare as practiced in the Dutch Republic under Maurits of Nassau, Prince of Orange. Under Maurits and his younger brother and successor Frederik Hendrik, Dutch military equipment became the best and most highly developed in Europe. They and this book helped turn military studies into a science, both reflecting and helping to bring about the Dutch golden age. With the contemporary owner's inscription on title-page of Herzog Wilhelm VI von Sachsen-Weimar (1598-1662), and traces of a bookplate on paste-down. With some gutter folds reinforced, some leaves slightly browned and an occasional spot, or small marginal tear, chip or hole, one slightly affecting the border of one folding plate, but otherwise in very good condition, with large margins and complete with the final blank leaf L2 (not noted in the literature). An essential, well-illustrated and beautifully produced source for understanding … [Click Below for Full Description]

Antique Collectible Book 1621 ROMAN CATHOLIC MISSAL EXORCISM RITUALS LATIN PLANTIN HOLY BIBLE DEMONOLOGY In 1555, Christoffel Plantin released his first book. In less than twenty years, Plantin's publishing house has become the top in Europe. Christophe Plantin and his son-in-law Jan Moretus were a revolutionary duo. They were the first printers on an industrial scale - the Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg of their day. Four hundred years later, you can simply drop in on them. Because their home and workplace are still there, as if they had just popped out to the bakery. Missale Romanum, ex decreto sacrosancti, Concilii tridentini restitutum, S. Pii V. Auctoritate recocgnitum: Ino quo Missae propriae de Sanctis omnes ad longum recèns positae sunt pro faciliori Celebrantium commoditate was printed in 1620 in Antwerp, Belgium. It was printed by Plantin-Moretus press. Although the structure has changed over time, generally speaking, a missal is a liturgical book that contains the text (chants, prayers, readings), rubrics (areas of text written in red), and instructions for the Roman Catholic mass. This particular missal contains ten two-page spreads featuring full-page engravings of religious scenes facing text surrounded by very ornate and detailed engraved borders. The detailed images provide an opportunity to learn about iconography, specifically Christian iconography. The title page also features a depiction of the last supper. Extensive 20th-century notations as neat miniscule cyphers and markings crossing text in colored ink attempting to support the Bacon-Shakespeare conspiracy(presumably the conspiracist surmised that having been both men's contemporary, Burton hid the conspiracy clues all over his text) - a very fitting provenance of derangement for this book. The classic study on depression by the Oxford clergyman scholar - but the book is much more than that. It's a rich work that touches upon so many facets of life with great humor, compassion, and empathy. PTOLEMY Claudius.; MAGINI Giovanni Antonio
1621-1620. Quarto (298 x 200 mm); two parts in one volume, twenty-seven Ptolemaic maps and thirty-seven modern maps; the first part the Geographia, the second Magini?s commentary and additions. The second dedication is misbound. Contemporary vellum, five raised bands and ms. title to head of spine. Vellum covering raised bands worn and in some places cracked with minor loss. Padua : Paolo and Francesco Galignani, Uncommon edition of Ptolemy?s Geografia, as published by Magini in 1596, subsequently edited by Leonard Cernoti, here reprinted in 1621. Giovanni Antonio Magini (1555-1617) was the leading mapmaker of his day working in Italy, author of the first printed atlas devoted to Italy, and also a very important (and rare) wall-map of Italy. Because of the rarity of these works, he is perhaps best known for this edition of Ptolemy, which met both with critical and commercial success, and was reprinted to 1621. Magini?s edition is significant for the greatly expanded commentary to the maps that he added. The maps were engraved by Girolamo Porro (1529-1600), the most famous of the Italian map engravers of the period, best known for the island maps in Tomaso Porcacchi?s Isole piu famose del Mondo, 1572, although his work is found in many illustrated books of the period. Porro was praised for the delicacy of his work, despite the handicap of poor vision in one eye. The map of Forum Julii is notable for containing a compass on which is shown magnetic variation. This edition is larger format than usual, as it has the maps printed above text, which continues on the verso. Referenc … [Click Below for Full Description]

Penn, U. Texas). MUN, THOMAS
London: Nicholas Okes for John Pyper, 1621. FIRST EDITION. Mun served on the board of the East India Company from 1615 until his death in 1641. This is his first publication. In the Discourse on Trade (1621), Mun defends the company against charges of depleting England s bullion stock and thus its wealth by sending it to the East Indies in exchange for goods. Mun, also known for England s Treasure by Foreign Trade, published in 1664, years after his death, was the leading theorist of mercantilism. In the Discourse, Mun argued that the temporary export of gold and silver resulted in a net expansion of wealth through the growth of international trade. In Mun s view, the trading universe was essentially a coherent and mutually supporting community. Too much frugality at home would restrict foreign purchases of English good, he warned, for if the English did not use foreign goods, foreigners would not have the wherewithal to buy English ones and there would be no sale abroad. . . [Mun presents a] succinct and compelling explanation of the dynamics of growth through commercial expansion (Appleby, Economic Thought and Ideology in 17th-Century England). VERY RARE. No copies appear in the auction records since 1979. This is one of a handful of copies to appear for sale in this century. Mun s Discourse is bound with 3 other rare 17th-century tracts on trade: the earliest example of corporation publicity WHEELER, JOHN. This particular missal contains ten two-page spreads featuring full-page engravings of religious scenes facing text surrounded by very ornate and detailed engraved borders. The detailed images provide an opportunity to learn about iconography, specifically Christian iconography. The title page also features a depiction of the last supper. Unfortunately, none of the engravings are signed, making authorship unclear. This particular missal is notab … [Click Below for Full Description]

First published in English in 1606, Speed's Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine followed the model of Ortelius's Theatrum orbis terrarum in its title and its format, with map sheets backed by historical and geographical texts and gazetteers of place names. This was the one of the earliest attempts in England at producing an atlas on a grand scale, with the first detailed maps of Ireland, the first set of county maps consistently showing the boundaries of territorial divisions, and the first truly comprehensive set of English town plans-all notable contributions to British topography. Perhaps as many as fifty of the s … [Click Below for Full Description]
