Plautius, Caspar.
[Linz] Folio (32.6 cm, 12.875"). Engr. t.-p., [2] ff., 101, [1] pp. (lacks final blank leaf); 18 plts.. 1621 Curiously the dedicatee of this work, Caspar Plautius, is certainly also its author, writing under the pseudonym of Honorius Philoponus. Plautius was abbot of Seitenstetten in Lower Austria, and no doubt wrote as a compliment to a fellow Benedictine: Bernard Buil or Boyl of Montserrat, appointed by the pope vicar general of the Indies, who, with others of the order, accompanied Columbus on his second voyage as missionaries. In the style of a medieval legendary, Nova typis transacta navigatio novi orbis Indiae occidentalis relates first the westward voyage of St. Brendan, then the exploits of the Boyl and his fellow monks, including some description of the customs of the American native peoples they met, with their lands, their agriculture, their feast customs, et al. Boyl's missionary enterprise failed, and sadly he is now only remembered for his mordant criticism of Columbus. This book bears an ornate, emblematic engraved title-page, with portraits of St. Brendan and Boyl and more, and no fewer than 18 leaf-filling plates by Wolfgang Kilian. These plates, which mix fancy and realism in entirely engaging ways, include a portrait of Columbus, a scene of St. Brendan celebrating mass on the back of a whale, botanical images of the marvelous Peruvian potato, and numerous views of the missionaries' interaction with the natives, some friendly, and some not—the unfriendliest being notably violent and gory. Also, on p. 35–36 is given an example of purported native American … [Click Below for Full Description]

CCFR (BNF, La Rochelle).

Spilbergen, Joris
Zutphen, 1621. Small oblong quarto. 19th century vellum. Very minor soiling and toning. Very good. A fundamentally important record of Dutch circumnavigation, military activity, and trade rivalry in the early 17th century, this narrative was first published in Leyden in 1619 and later published in French and the present Dutch, in 1621. It is appropriate that this volume contains the accounts of both Joris Van Spilbergen and Jacob Le Maire's voyages, since the two were intertwined. Van Spilbergen undertook his voyage on behalf of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Le Maire's father, Isaac, had had a falling out with the VOC in 1605. He outfitted his own vessel for a circumnavigation, captained by his son, Jacob, and by Willem Corneliszoon Schouten, in order to lessen the VOC's trade monopoly. The first part of this volume contains the account of Spilbergen's circumnavigation, while the later part treats the voyage of Le Maire. Of the two voyages, that of Le Maire and Schouten is the more significant. They discovered a new passage to the Pacific south of the Straits of Magellan, sailed around Tierra del Fuego, and named Cape Horn. Sailing to the west, they discovered the islands of the Taumoto Archipelago, the Tonga group, the Solomon Islands, and several islands along the northern coast of New Guinea. These discoveries contributed greatly to the European knowledge of the South Pacific. When Le Maire and Schouten's ship reached Jakarta in late 1616, they were seized by agents of the Dutch East India Company and sailed the rest of the way back to the Netherlands accompanied b … [Click Below for Full Description]

SNELLIUS, WILLEBRORD (SNELL; SNELL van ROYEN).
Lvgdvni Batavorum [London], Ex officinâ Elzeviriana, 1621. 4to. Later full vellum. 5 pages with professional marginal repairs, far from affecting text. A fine and clean copy with broad margins. (20), 102 pp. ¶ The rare first edition of Snell's famous work, in which pi was found to thirty-four decimals for the first time, thereby producing a new method for calculating pi - the first such improvement since ancient times.Using Van Ceulen's method, 96-sided polygons give pi correct to 7 places, while the classical method yields only 2 places. Van Ceulen's 35 places could be found with polygons of 230 sides rather than 262 and Van Ceulen's 35 places of pi appear in print for the first time in the present work. De Morgan noted that: "This is a celebrated work on the approximative quadrature, which, having the suspicious word cyclometricus, must be noticed here for distinction" (De Morgan, A Budget of Paradoxes). "In the Cyclometricus (1621) pi was found, by Van Ceulen's methods, to thirty-four decimals; and the thirty-fifth decimal, found in Van Ceulen's papers, was added. Snel also explained his own shorter method, following and improving on Van Lansberge's Cyclometria nova (1616)" (DSB)."He showed how narrower limits may be obtained for pi without increasing the number of sides which gave closer limits for the corresponding arcs. His method was superior to that of Van Ceulen that the 34 places were obtained from a polygon of 2*30 sides, i.e., 1,073,741,824 sides, from which Van Ceulen had obtained only 14 or perhaps 16 places. Similarly, the value for pi obtained correct to two … [Click Below for Full Description]

ARATUS Solensis and Jakob van GHEYN
Amsterdam, Joannes Jansson, 1621. Folio (310 x 200 mm), ff [45], comprising letterpress title, one unnumbered engraved emblematic plate of the planets and zodiac, and 43 numbered plates of the constellation figures; some faint marginal waterstaining, a few incidental spots and stains, a very good copy in contemporary limp vellum, old collector's monogram on title.First edition of this separate suite of the van Gheyn engravings of the Hyginus constellations, first used to illustrate Grotius's edition of Aratus in 1600, which was the first engraved star atlas. The van Gheyn versions of Hyginus served as the models for Bayer's figures in his Uranometria, Augsburg 1603. As the title states, the illustrations were based on a manuscript of Aratus in the University of Leiden.Warner (who mistakenly refers to the figures as woodcuts) states that they were 'perhaps the finest illustrations of the individual Hyginus constellations'.Jakob van Gheyn II (1565-1629) was a Dutch Mannerist engraver and painter. He studied in Haarlem under Hendrik Goltzius, and executed commissions for Maurice of Nassau, Prince of Orange. The first plate is unsigned; the first numbered plate is signed 'I.D. Gheyn figur.', and the remaining ones 'IDG'.Warner p 93 1a; OCLC records US Naval Observatory and Ohio State for North America [Attributes: First Edition]

[Madrid, 1621. [1],5 leaves. Folio. Loose gatherings. Outermost gathering neatly reinforced with tissue along spine and fore edges. Discreet tissue repairs to fore edge of other leaves. Clean and fresh. Very good. Memorial to the King of Spain written by Juan Ortiz de Cervantes, Procurador General, advocating for the rights of encomendero holders in Peru. Ortiz de Cervantes points out the need to treat the native population more gently - not from any moral stance, but because the harsh labor draft for the Potosi mines was killing so many Indians that it was threatening the general economy of the province, and thus the profits of the encomenderos. He also argues that Peru's creole elite should be appointed to high offices based on their merits. Date and imprint suggested by EUROPEAN AMERICANA. [Madrid? 1621].. Only two copies in OCLC, at the John Carter Brown Library and the British Library. SABIN 1716. MEDINA (BHA) 6697. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 621/94. PALAU 205774.

NODAL, Bartolome Garcia de
Madrid: Fernando Correa, 1621. Small quarto, with the large folding map (350 x 420 mm.); engraved title with inset portraits of the Nodal brothers, their two ships and the Straits of Magellan, signed I. De Courbes; three woodcuts in the text; some minimal soiling in margins and a couple of marginal tears; a fine and genuine copy, with the correct first edition of the map, in contemporary limp vellum, spine lettered by hand, ties partially present. An exceptional rarity: complete with the map. An outstanding copy of one of the most elusive of all voyage books. This first edition, notoriously difficult to find and especially so with its correct map, was a famous rarity even in the 1860s when Sabin described it as 'one of the rarest books of its class'. The Hill catalogue calls it 'particularly with the map...one of the rarest books on voyages of the 17th century'. The map was very probably not generally issued; Thomas W. Streeter's collection had to make do with a facsimile, although his son Frank S. Streeter managed to secure a copy once in an Argentinian Jesuit library (sale 16 April 2007, lot 386).The Hill catalogue mentions that 'copies containing the map are so rare that it is believed to have been suppressed in accordance with official Spanish policy of secrecy'. In any event, the book has almost never appeared complete on the market in modern times. Most libraries and collectors have had to make do with the second edition, itself very scarce, which was published almost 150 years later in 1769.This landmark voyage of Pacific discovery to the Straits of Magellan cleared … [Click Below for Full Description]

René CHOPPIN
Last edition, after the first published in 1574 Title page in red and black. Great brand impimeur the title page. Full sheepskin brown vintage. Spine ribbed ornate. Part of title in brown morocco. Double fillet border on covers. A slight wetness, dry and clear at the top of the center structure of 8 cm, without any seriousness, but browner in the last index. Good copy. Test the legitimacy of the French monarchy and its laws. Choppin defends the idea of a centralized student, not only Roman law royalty, but also the feudal and royal right to the Goths, in Byzantium, the Persians, Egyptians, Macedonians ... In his third book, Choppin examines the characteristics of the Salic law in France (which excludes women could rule) by comparing it to the right in other nations. The first version of the Salic Code (criminal and civil law) dates back to the fifth century and settled inheritance. In line with Bodin, from Anjou like him and he accused of having plundered his ideas, the lawyer Choppin is a sovereignist thinker, he supported the strength of the state on the notion of sovereignty; this is one of the first thinker of the concept of state. Three indexes end of the book, allowing in particular to trace the historical specificities of each nation (Scotland, Denmark ...) --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.
