London: (1620). Printed by George Purslow, 1620. The decorated title page is an engraved full page frontispiece with a miniature print of Hayward and signed: W Hole sculp. (William Hole, d. 1624, engraver. ) Dedicated to George [Abbot] Archbishop of Canterbury. - Sir John Hayward was an English historian born and educated at or near Felixstowe, Suffolk, and graduated at Cambridge. His earliest book production, "The First Part of the Life and Raigne of Henrie the IIII. , extending to the End of the First Yeare of his Raigne (1599) ", placed him in the bad graces of Queen Elizabeth, who was easily persuaded that he was painting a moral for herself in his account of Richard II. 's downfall, and therefore had the historian imprisoned. Having learned his lesson, Hayward kept the favor of James I. , dedicated books to him and his son, defended the divine right of kings, and advocated the union of England and Scotland. In this seventeenth century work on devotion and meditation, the First Part of "Sanctuarie of a Troubled Soule" was written while Hayward was imprisioned within the Tower. The frontispiece shows Hayward staring out from beneath a bleeding, Contrite Heart of Grief and Fear, supported by Faith, Love, and Hope, and above two vignettes indicating pictorially the need to 'Flye from Evel' and 'Doe Good'. - STC 13007. - 12mo [62], 342, [18], 413 pp. - Handsome volume securely bound with boards tooled in full calf and in quite good condition. Plate : This architectural plate shows parts of a church or cathedral. We have not been able to find further reference. We appreciate any input. Engraving / etching on a verge type of hand laid paper. Description: This original antique master print was originally published ca.1620 (estimate), as it appears to be an Italian scene. This plate is a later 18th. c. ed. on hand laid paper. Our definition of a Master Print is a seperately published print or series of prints, not being an illustrative print to a text. These can both be prints made by old masters (artists) or prints made by others (artists, engravers, etchers) after old masters.Artists and Engravers: This plate designed and engraved by Callot, published by Israel. Jacques Callot (Nancy 1592-1635) was a famous baroque printmaker and draftsman from Lorraine / present day France. He was active in Italy employed by Cosimo II de Medici until 1621. He is an important figure in the development of the old master print and highly popular. Israel Henriet (Nancy, 1590-1661) was a designer, engraver and seller of engravings. He was already befriended with Callot in Nancy. His father, Claude Henriet, first painter of Charles III de Lorraine, was a friend of Jean Callot, father of Jacques Callot. He studied in Florence under Antonio Tempesta, in the same period as Callot. After he went to Paris he became 'peintre et dessinateur du Roi.' He got the exclusive publication rights to the etchings of Callot starting in 1629. After Callot's death he acquired the majority of Callot's work and continued publishing these postume. He also e … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Scott, Thomas]
[London], 1620. [27]pp. Small quarto. Modern three-quarter red morocco and cloth, spine gilt. Minor toning. Very good. "[This work] purports to describe the report of the Spanish ambassador, Gondomar, to the council of state in Madrid on his return from his first embassy to England in 1618. The ambassador recounts the success of his efforts to subvert the English government, and describes with evident satisfaction the crowds that flocked to mass in his chapel in London. Relaxation of the recusancy laws, the banning of decent protestant preaching as 'puritan', and the distribution of popish propaganda, Gondomar claims, have all been obtained by bribery of courtiers and the king's ministers. Gleefully Gondomar also describes the failure of Ralegh's expedition and his subsequent destruction, connived at by the unholy alliance of greedy courtiers, personal enemies, and outright papists which the Spaniard boasts of orchestrating....Apparently taken for a piece of genuine reportage at a time of deep, and not entirely unjustified, religious paranoia, the anonymously published pamphlet caused a furore, and prompted an energetic hunt for its author. Its printers remained at work producing new editions, though they were evidently disturbed by the hue and cry - several of these editions 'are composed of assorted sheets of different impressions hastily bound together' (Adams, 'Captain Thomas Gainsford,' 143)....[T]his tract stands as a powerful and excoriating criticism of the Hispanophile and pacific strands of Jacobean foreign policy....In VOX POPULI, as later in the tracts writt … [Click Below for Full Description]
