He helped establish Amsterdam as the center of cartography in Europe in the 17th century. He was born in Wakken and grew up in Ghent. In his early years he established himself as an engraver, instrument maker and globe maker. In 1584 he moved to London to escape religious difficulties in Flanders. While in England, Hondius was instrumental in publicizing the work of Francis Drake, who had made a circumnavigation of the world in the late 1570s. In particular, in 1589 Hondius produced a now famous map of the bay of New Albion, where Drake briefly established a settlement on the west coast of North America. Hondius' map was based on journal and eyewitness accounts of the trip and has long fueled speculation about the precise location of Drake's landing, which has not yet been firmly established by historians. Hondius is also thought to be the artist of several well-known portraits of Drake that are now in the National Portrait Gallery in London. In 1593 he moved to Amsterdam, where he remained until the end of his life. 1620". In-8 de (1)f. de titre, 396pp., (20)ff. : table des matières. [Click Below for Full Description]

Lampérière, Jean de
Rouen Du Petit Val 1620 - Mit Holzschn.-Druckermarke a. d. Titel. 8 Bll., 421 Seiten, 4 Bll. Flexibles Pergament der Zeit. Erste Ausgabe. - "In 1568 Ambroise Paré claimed that 'the putrefaction of the plague is very difficult from all other putrefactions, because it has a hidden unspeakable malignancy'. The recommendations for protection against this invisible danger focused on the cliensing of unhealthy places and on ways of protecting a porous human body which might be penetrated by dangerous vapours. The famous costume of plague doctors, including a mask with a long nose stuffed with protective fragrances, derived from this principle. An increasingly close relationship began to be accepted between noxious smells, excrement, sin and hell. The excrement of certain animals was particularly feared. Jean de Lampérière, in his 'Traité de la peste', published in Rouen in … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bibliografia: Motta, p. 3; Arrigoni-Bertarelli, n. 1023; Colombo-Rondanini-GRSD, p. 16 e p. 19; Cremonini 1991, p. 19, n.15. MAGINI, Giovanni Antonio
impensis ipsius Auctoris, 1620. Folio. pp (x) 24, 61 engraved maps (59 double page, 2 single) Italic letter, text within printed double-rule borders, engraved architectural t.p. by Oliviero Gatti, depicting allegorical figures of the sciences with instruments and globe within typographical border, early case no. at head, full page medallion portrait of the author dated 1632. Light water stain to earlier maps around centrefold, else a fine, large and thick paper copy, the maps in admirable, very clear impressions. In contemporary French calf, triple panels with ornamental cornerpieces to corners, all gilt, spine in eight compartments gilt (small repair at tail), edges speckled red, early paper labels 'F' and 'Italie' on upper cover. A handsome, very well margined copy of the second edition of the premier early Italian atlas, which dominated Italian cartography for at least the next half century. Most of the main C17 cartographers, including the Dutch compiler-editors, followed, copied, or incorporated Magni's regional maps, even Ortelius (with whom Magini corresponded) as well as Brahe and Kepler's and Blaeu used some of them. Magini (1555-1617) Paduan astronomer, astrologer, cartographer and mathematician studied at Bologna and famously was appointed to the chair of Mathematics there in preference to Galileo. His chef d'oeuvre however was the present atlas, designed to include a detailed map of every region of Italy with exact nomenclature and historical notes. Began in 1594 it soon proved ruinously expensive and Magini assumed the posts of astrologer to Vincenzo Gonzaga, D … [Click Below for Full Description]

INTERNET/06641

Frankfurt am Main: Jacobus de Zetter, 1620 8vo., (6 x 3 6/8 inches). Engraved title-page (page [iv] upper corner renewed). 33 engraved illustrations in the text. Modern panelled vellum over paste-board by Samelanx and Weckesser, yapp fore-edges, lettered in gilt on the spine. Provenance: with 20th-century bibliographical notes on the front endpapers; modern armorial bookplate of Bibliotheque I.G. Schorsch on the verso of the front free endpaper First edition in Latin, translated by Johann Flittner, of Murner's 1512 Schelmenzunft, a satirical gallery of rogues patterned after Sebastian Brant's Narrenschiff. Murner is considered by many to be amongst the greatest German satirists of the 16th-century. "During the epoch immediately preceding and during the early years of the Reformation, three figures are especially prominent among the loyal champions of the Church in Germany, namely Johann Geller von Kaysersberg, his friend, Sebastian, the well-known satirist, and Thomas Murner, the ablest and most formidable of Luther's opponents. In his "Schelmenzunft" Murner deals with the same subject as Brant's "Narrenschiff", but his work is entirely original in treatment and far surpasses the earlier work in its popular appeal, its wit, and its vigour degenerating, indeed, at times into coarseness. His subsequent satires, "Gäuchmatt" (Fools' Meadow) and "Die Mühle von Schwindelsheim und Gretmüllerin Jahrzeit", in whic … [Click Below for Full Description]
