MAGINI Giovanni Antonio.
Pochi strappetti, riparati in antico. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

LINOCIER, Geoffroy (15??-1584), Antoine DUPINET (1510?-1584?), Jean ROBIN [attributed] (1550-1629) and others
Paris, Guillaume Macé, 1619-1620. 8 parts (each with their own title-page) in one vol, 16mo (114 x 75 mm), pp 704; 16; 239 [57, index], six woodcut title borders from the same block (see below), with several hundred woodcuts of plants, animals, and distilling apparatus; a very good copy, in contemporary French calf, spine with gilt ornaments in compartments, spine rubbed and badly worn at head and tail.A charming and fascinating compilation, with over 900 fine miniature woodcuts taken from many sources, its several sections illustrating plants, quadrupeds, fish, serpents, distillation, exotic products from the East Indies and the Americas, and much else. This work has also been responsible for much bibliographical confusion concerning one of its components, the Jean Robin Histoire des plantes, nouvellement trouvées en l'Isle Virgine. This 16-page treatise was often extracted from the volume and sold as an independent Americanum (see below). The first and largest part of Linocier's text is a French translation of Antoine Dupinet's condensed version of Mattioli, Historia plantarum: simplicium medicamentorum facultates ex Dioscoride (Lyon 1561 and 1567), with some additions. It was first published in 1584 by Macé, but without the Robin text. It included material taken from Gesner, Charles de l'Ecluse, Gracia de Orta, Nicolas Monardes, and others. In 1619 Macé brought out the above edition, with an eighth tract added, the above-named work attributed to 'Jean Robin, Arboriste du Roy' and dedicated to 'Thomas Morand' (see below). The title phrase ''Isle Virgine' refers to the Virgi … [Click Below for Full Description]

George. YULE, Alexander BUCHANAN
[Christianity, Religion, Verse] ~ JULIUS' BUCHANAN BUCHANAN, George. YULE, Alexander Ecphrarasis paraphraseos Georgii Buchanani in Psalmos davidis: Ab Alexandro Julio edinburgeno, In Adolescentiae studiosae Londini. Excusum apid Georgium Eld, 1620. 8vo. [16], 364pp, [4]. With terminal blank and errata leaves. Twentieth-century blue half-morocco, gilt, buckram boards. T.E.G. Tightly bound, title neatly reinforced at gutter, else a fine, remarkably clean copy. The first edition of Stirling High School master Alexander Yule's (d.1624) Latin prose paraphrase of George Buchanan's poetic version of the Psalms of David, which he composed during his imprisonment in Lisbon. As well as providing an extremely handsomely laid out text for a younger audience, the historical significance of Yule's edition is that he had been acquainted with Buchanan in his youth, and is said to have consulted with him on this ekphrasis. A second edition appeared in 1699. Outside of the UK, ESTC locates copies at only seven locations (Bancroft, Folger, Harvard, Huntington, Illinois, Indiana and Yale). ESTC S106068. London: "The Workes of Lucius Annaeus Seneca, Newly Inlarged and Corrected by Thomas Lodge" published 1620. Second edition of the early "Lodge" English translation, the first edition was in 1614. Unpaginated Dedication + Letter to the Reader + Epistle to the Translator + Life of Seneca + Table of Contents + 921p. Possibly missing 'a2' leaf just after the title page and before the first page of the dedication lettered 'a3'. Most likely blank; I cannot discern any missing content compared to other examples of this book. Folio, measures 8.75" x 13" Notable Issues: Old and probably amateur rebind- I believe it incorporated portions of original binding and boards but with two truncated corners on the boards. First leaf and title page plus the 2 page dedication appears to have been poorly reinserted (see pictures 4-5). The 2 page dedication is unfortunately sticking together at the bottom and detaching at the top. Rest of binding is actually quite tight and readable with some waffling. I've read much of it without any issue. Very nice text block. Pages are of course somewhat yellowed, but with little staining, foxing or dog ears. First 52 pages show progressively diminishing wear to the lower right corner. Same to final 8 pages but with increasing wear. I am merely a novice collector/seller, so if you have a question please ask and I will answer as soon as I can! Ships free. Best offer is available for this item.

Johann Buxtorf
Basileae : Ludovici Ko?nig, 1620. Folio measuring approx. 16 x 10.5 inches, bound in full leather boards which are detached and badly rubbed, spine cover lacking, signatures mostly loose and in need of resewing; first title [which runs from back to front of book] with separate Hebrew and Latin title pages [photos], collates: [8], 441 leaves; Buxtorf presented the entire Old Testament, but it appears this volume contains only the first half; since I do not read Hebrew, I have included a photo of the final page verso of leaf 441. There are some internal title pages, of which I have a couple photos. Please ask for additional photos with specifics. The second title Tiberias runs front to back, with full title page [see photo] and is paginated: 4 leaves [final is blank] + 114 pages + blank leaf; a few library marks on title pages, occasional light age toning; email with any questions [Attributes: Hard Cover]

George Buchanan
London: George Eld, 1620 Book. Very Good. Full-Leather. 1st Edition. [16] pp 364 [4] errata. Poetical translation of the psalms by Scotland's most famous humanist, collated and complete and bound in seventeenth century calf. The leather binding is dry and rubbed to edges and extremities, with remnants of delicate gilt decoration to the spine and edge rolls to the boards. Internally complete as called for with the terminal errata and blank; a closed tear near the gutter of B1, loss along foreedge of p41 not affecting text; attractive printer's device to title page. The text is printed in columns, a sophisticated piece of work by George Eld. This paraphrase of the psalms is regarded as Buchanan's masterpiece: ' Their aim is not theological or educational... but fits entirely within the Humanist project of revitalizing ancient texts by translating them into Latin. As such, George Buchanan's Psalmorum Davidis paraphrasis poetica was an instant success in the sixteenth century.' MAGINI GIOVANNI ANTONIO.
Incisione in rame, bianco nero. Mm 345x480. Johann Flittner
Frankfurt am Main Jakob de Zetter, 1620. 8° (156x98 mm). Collation: [π]4, A-K8, L4. [8], 164, [4] pages. Complete with fol. L4 blank. Roman and italic type. Engraved title-page. Thirty-three engravings in the text (91x72 mm). Woodcut decorated initials, head- and tailpieces. Contemporary blind-ruled vellum, over pasteboards. Spine with inked title. A very good, unsophisticated copy. Outer margin of the title-page slightly trimmed. Minor browning, wormholes in the inner margin not affecting the text.Provenance: given as a gift by 'Petr. Mock.' to a certain 'Doctor Frederice' (address on the recto of the front flyleaf); modern, unidentified ex-libris on the front pastedown. First edition of the free Latin adaptation by the German poet laureate Johann Flittner of the Schelmen Zunft by Thomas Murner, a collection of satirical poems first published in 1512 and strongly influenced by Brant's famous Narrenschiff. Flittner's adaption enjoyed great popularity: subsequent editions of the Nebulo Nebulonum were published in 1634, 1636, 1644, and 1663, while a translation into Dutch appeared in Leeuwarden in 1634 and 1645. The work is dedicated to the brothers Joannes Jacobus, Dominicus and Joannes Porsch, and contains thirty-three poems, each of which is illustrated by an allegorical engraving and accompanied by two captions, one for the poem and one for the plate, as well as an explanation in prose. Particularly for its age, the Nebulo Nebulonum is a very curious emblem book, which makes fun of the customs of Flittner's time, sparing no social class. If the clergy is the most heavi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Karl von Innerösterreich, Erzherzog von Österreich und Bischof von Breslau und Brixen (1590-1624).
¾ S. Folio.

BIANCANI, Giuseppe [Josephus BLANCANUS].
Bologna: Sebastiano Bonomi for Geronimo Tamburini, 1620. First edition. First edition of Biancani's rare Jesuit treatise on astronomy which "brought Clavius's Sphaera up to date, incorporating in it the discoveries of Galileo, Kepler, and others, and enthusiastically endorsed the advances being made in astronomy ... [Biancani] defended Galileo's stand regarding mountains on the moon--which elicited a long letter from Galileo to another Jesuit astronomer, Christopher Grienberger, in which Galileo states that he is "infinitely obliged" to Biancani. Unfortunately this student of Clavius got too enthusiastic in Galileo's cause, and his remaining writings were never passed for publication by the censors of his Order" (Wallace 2003, pp. 108-9). "In 1620 there appeared an important treatise on astronomy which consistently and repeatedly used the word telescope. This was the Sphaera mundi of Josephus Blancanus, or Giuseppe Biancani ... [He] was the first to employ exclusively and repeatedly the term 'telescope' in an extended treatise. More importantly, however, is the fact that his example and influence undoubtedly hastened general acceptance and use of the term" (McColley, pp. 364-5). "In present-day literature [Biancani] is sometimes depicted as an opponent of Galileo and the new science, but his exchanges in the unpublished sources with several Jesuit censors over his two main books show that quite the opposite was the case. These documents clearly reveal a split within the Jesuits at that time between the philosophers of orthodox Aristotelian persuasion and a group of mathemat … [Click Below for Full Description]

Roma, 1620. The work is based by Mario Cartaro map of the area (1584) and its subsequent derivations by Duchetti, Cartaro himself and Van Aelst. Compared to all these maps is slightly smaller format, with a scale of miles, however absent, greater. The orientation is provided in the sea by a compass rose. GORLAEUS (VAN GOORLE, VAN GOOIRLE), David.
[Leyden]: in bibliopolio Commeliniano sumptibus viduae Joannis Comelini, 1620. First edition. First edition, extremely rare, of one of the earliest modern works on atomism. "Gorlaeus is counted among the founders of modern atomism, which he proposed as an alternative to Aristotelian matter theory. Because of his notion of atomic compounds, he is also regarded as a contributor to the evolution of chemistry" (DSB). "When David Gorlaeus (1591-1612) passed away at 21 years of age, he left behind two highly innovative manuscripts. Once they were published [as the present work, and as Idea physicae (1610), his work had a remarkable impact on the evolution of seventeenth-century thought. However, as his identity was unknown, divergent interpretations of their meaning quickly sprang up. Seventeenth-century readers understood him as an anti-Aristotelian thinker and as a precursor of Descartes. Twentieth-century historians depicted him as an atomist, natural scientist and even as a chemist. And yet, when Gorlaeus died, he was a beginning student in theology. His thought must in fact be placed at the intersection between philosophy, the nascent natural sciences, and theology" (Lüthy). This is a very rare book. In his review of Lüthy's book in 2012, Henri Krop wrote: "until now Gorlaeus's life and ideas have remained basically unknown because both his elaborate Exercitationes philosophicae and his Idea physicae are extremely rare and copies were unavailable in Dutch public libraries. (However since 1986 the libraries of both Leiden and Leeuwarden have acquired copies of the former.)" W … [Click Below for Full Description]

RICARDO RUSCA
RICARDO RUSCA. Martyrium B. Memoriae Nicolai Rusca archipresbyteri sondriensis in Rhetia superiori, sub Dioecesi Curiensi, a Lutherocalvinianis praedicantibus.. Ingolstadt: Ex Typographeo Ederiano apud Elisabetham Angermariam viduam, 1620. First Edition. Very rare biography of the life and martyrdom of Italian priest Blessed Nicolo Rusca (1563-1618), beatified in 2013. Rusca was born in tiny Italian-speaking region of Switzerland and spent his life ministering to the Catholic population strattling the border of Italy and Switzerland. Because of the inroads of Protestantism in the region, Rusca inevitably was caught up in the controversial atmosphere, and was eventually captured, tortured and killed in Graubunden in 1618 under suspicion of having aided in the persecution of Protestants. Nothing is known of the author of this biography, Ricardo Rusca, but it is likely that he is a family relative since he has the same surname. Very important contemporary source material of this little-known priest. 4to, [2], 125, [1]. Bound in modern wrappers. No copies recorded in U.S. institutions. [Attributes: First Edition]
