Falloppio
Italy: Somasco, 1620. Very good. the rare Falloppio's surgery book [surgery] Falloppio, Giuseppe. La Chirurgia [...]. Tradotta dalla sua latina nella lingua volgare, & novamente posta in luce. per Gio. Pietro Maffei. Venice: Somasco, 1620. 4to (218x155 mm), contemporary limp vellum with handwritten title on spine, ff. [8], 431, [1, blank]. Title-page printed in red and black. A very rare edition of Falloppio's surgery, translated in Italian language. Gabriele Falloppio (1523-1562), often known by his Latin name Fallopius, was one of the most important anatomists and physicians of the sixteenth century. He is known for his valuable contributions to the anatomy of the bones and muscles and first correctly described the so-called Fallopian tube, which leads from the ovary to the uterus and now bears his name. The aquæductus Fallopii, the canal through which the facial nerve passes after leaving the auditory nerve, is also named after him. His contributions to surgery were also important. He was the first to use an aural speculum for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the ear, and his writings on surgical subjects are still of interest. He published two treatises on ulcers and tumors, a treatise on surgery, and a commentary on Hippocrates's book on wounds of the head. Condition: Some light water-stains and other minor traces of use. References: Not in Krivatsy, Garrison-Morton, Osler and Walleriana. Wellcome I, 2168. All Falloppio editions of Chirurgia are very rare on the market: according to HUB, a copy of the present edition appeared in auction only in 1979.

Robin, J[ean]
Paris: Chez Guillaum Maceau, 1620. First Edition. Full brown calf, not original, inconspicuous pencil dated June 10th, 1905, on page 3, possible rebind date. Fine. VERY RARE FIRST EDITION of the first book of Botanics that describes and illustrates North American Plants. 4.5" x 3", 14 woodcut engravings within text, 16 mo., pp. 3-16, Title page is bordered by decorative flora and fauna motif. Among the 14 plants described and illustrated by a woodcut, 5 come from the New World, 5 from Asia and 4 from Europe. On the back of the title, an "advertisement to the reader" gives this edition, like a "second edition", however no first edition is known to have existed. This uncertainty of precedence is attributed to the printer Guillaume Macéau who intended to include this small booklet of 16 pages within the History of Plants by Geoffroy Linocier. Unnamed ex-Libris bookplate on inside cover and narrow, 3-line description from a British bookseller (price 3L) adhered to spine alley of ffe, less than 1" dew mark on lower right corner of title page, incidental dog ear to last 4 pages. A similar copy sold at Christie's in 2010 for 8,250 GBP. Sabin describes it of extreme rarity. Including this copy, less than 15 others are known to exist. Title: History of Newly discovered plants in the Virgine Isles and other places, which were taken and cultivated in the garden of Monsieur Robin Arboriste du Roy.

Nouvelle édition, après la première parue en 1619. Rare. *** [English translation available upon request. Contact us for any information!]. [1620]. Engraved title-page and 117 numbered woodcuts in three series (42, 43, 32). 4to (295 x 155mm). 3 parts, ff. [4], [44], [44], [33] with blank [1st] L4 and final I1 (stub visible). Contemporary Dutch limp vellum, lacking ties. Zutphen: Chez André Ianssen d'Aelst, [ca. 1620] A beautiful copy of this classic early 17th-century work on the use of hand weapons, a polyglot edition newly illustrated with woodcuts for a more practical use than the more lavish folio editon. Extremely rare, recorded by ESTC in three copies only (British Library, Bodleian Oxford, and the Ministry of Defence Library). The publisher's preface given in French, German, Dutch and English (printed in italic), is addressed to 'al souldgiours and these that take deleight in armes'. It is dated from Zutphen 20 August 1619, and states that because the original work in folio is expensive and too big to be had on a long journey he has 'thaught fit to reduce it in such a small forme as yow heere see' but has 'not left owt anye thingh wich is in the great Booke. ' He also tells us that he had divided it into three several parts, & eche own of them shal be soulde asunder'. The three parts are '1.The use of the callivres. 2. The use of the Musket. 3. The use of the Pike.' The OED defines 'calliver' thus:' a light kind of musket or arquebus. it seems to have been the lightest portable firearm, excepting the pistol, and to have been fired without a 'rest'. The section of muskets shows them all using a 'rest.' In the main text each page spread comprises a numbered woodcut illustration on the left hand page with a … [Click Below for Full Description]

As a work of one of the most influential Church Fathers, The City of God is a cornerstone of Western thought, expounding on many profound questions of theology, such as the suffering of the righteous, the existence of evil, the conflict between free will and divine omniscience, and the doctrine of original sin. Lucas Vorsterman (Bommel 1595 - Anversa 1675)
1620. Acquaforte misure: mm 580 x 440 Incisore e mercante d'arte fiammingo. London: J. Billium, 1620. Folio (290 x 190 mm). In its first binding of limp vellum, spine titled in manuscript, ties removed. Housed in a custom dark green morocco-backed green cloth slipcase and matching chemise. Endpaper across front pastedown with some loss to centre, perhaps from sometime removal of bookplate, short closed tear to bottom edge of leaf J2, 5 cm tear along gutter from bottom edge of M2, a few small rust holes touching one or two letters but remaining legible (Aa2, a few further spots to pp. 342-46), tiny wormhole from gathering Hh onwards, barely visible and not affecting text. A fine copy, the contents crisp and clean, with generous margins. Engraved title page by Simon de Passe, head- and tailpieces, initials. First edition of this "monumental work on the philosophy of science, on the systematic organization of knowledge, and on the inductive method" (Grolier/Horblitt). Bacon's Novum Organum (a "new instrument" to replace the old Organon of Aristotle) had a revolutionary impact on early modern science by laying the foundation of the inductive method. "Bacon's insistence on making science experimental and factual, rather than speculative and philosophical, had powerful consequences. He saw clearly the limitations of Aristotelian and scholastic methods and the growing breach between the thinking of his time and that of the Middle Ages is more precisely formulated than in that of, say, Tommaso Campanella or Giordano Bruno. As a philosopher Bacon's influence on Locke and through him on subsequent English schools of psychology and ethics was profound. Leibni … [Click Below for Full Description]
