GARASSE François & DU MOULIN Pierre
Bruselle|(Bruxelles): Par Christophle Girard, 1620. Fine. Par Christophle Girard, Bruselle (Bruxelles) 1620, Pet. in-8 (10,5x17,5cm), 240pp., relié. - New edition, after the first published in 1619. Rare. Full brown speckled calf contemporary. Back tooled raised. Lack in head cover. A pale yellow wetness footer on the entire volume. 3 wormholes tail. Copy to the pleasing appearance. The Jesuit Pierre Garasse (1585-1630) is well known for his eccentricities and his diatribes of great violence, up to rudeness and obscenity; it takes in this book his Protestant counterpart (also well known for the same qualities) and his works, notably on the vocation of pastors. Accusing him of being fed Rabelais, Garasse takes in this book look like a Protestant denouncing the misdeeds of a brother. The style is very happy satirical, allegorical poems combining burlesque and the more direct attacks. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. HOWARD, Henry, Earl of Northampton
[London:] by W. Jaggard, and to be sold by Mathew Lownes,, 1620. Not hitherto confuted by the Pen of any man, which being grounded, either upon the warrant and Authority of Old painted Bookes, Expositions of Dreames, Oracles, Revelations, Invocations of damned Spirits, Judicials of Astrologie, or any other kinde of pretended knowledge whatsoever, De futuris contigentibus; have beene causes of great disorder in the Common-wealth, especially among the simple and unlearned people. Very needfull to be published, considering the great offence, which grew by most palpable and grosse errors in Astrologie … Now newly revised, and divided into divers severall Heads and Chapters. Small folio (270 × 169 mm). Contemporary panelled calf, rebacked with original label laid down, inner hinges reinforced with cloth, corners restored, endpapers sometime renewed. Head and tailpieces throughout, title page with intricate engraved border; lacking initial blank. Contemporary gift inscription to head of title page partially erased; bookplate of Robert, marquess of Crewe (1858–1945). The occasional mark here and there, early ink notation to foot of one leaf, title page folded in at fore margin to preserve the border. Binding somewhat bumped and rubbed. An excellent copy. First published in 1583, this second edition was published posthumously. MESSAGER, J. (ca. 1580 - Paris - 1649) & PICQUET, J. (Troyes ca. 1600 - ca. 1650 Paris).
1620. [Paris, 1620s]. 245 x 175 mm. Half calf, gilt spine with floral ornaments and red gilt lettered label, marbled boards. An extremely rare suite of very beautiful bouquets in ornamental vases with grotesques, based on an equally rare group of larger prints by Jean Theodor de Bry. The vases are depicted surrounded by insects and other small animals, on a table-top. The plates are numbered lower left from 1 to 6 and the first engraving is signed on the table top in front to the left: 'I. Messager, excudit' and to the right 'I. Pictet Incidit'. The other plates are signed to the left 'I Messager. ex.' (or with minor variations). Each plate has a ribbon below the vase with a Latin inscription. The inscriptions, on the theme of transience, comprise a emblematic text in hexameters based on the six Latin declensions of the word 'Flos', or flower, and involve punning and word play. They translate as follows: 1. The Flower as a mirror of life: no sooner does it flower than it withers with a breath. 6. The quickly changing image of the Flower warns us of the swift passage of time. 3. The tender youth is like a Flower with advancing years. 4. Displaying the Flower [of youth] at the same time he bears the fruit [of maturity]. 2. Oh Flower, thus flowering in the youthful summer. 5. Follow the Flower's lead to a virtuous life. The change in order accords with the original series after which this set has been copied, with the images in reverse. The originals were a series of six larger prints by Jan Theodor de Bry (Liege 1561 - 1623 Frankfurt), produced in Frankfurt-am-Main about 1604 … [Click Below for Full Description]
