Morel Paris 1620.
Bibliografia: Motta, p. 3; Arrigoni-Bertarelli, n. 1023; Colombo-Rondanini-GRSD, p. 16 e p. 19; Cremonini 1991, p. 19, n.15. FLITTNER, Johann (fl. 1st half of the 17th cent.)
Frankfurt a.M: Jakob de Zetter, 1620. 8vo (156x98 mm); contemporary blind-ruled vellum over boards, ink title on spine; [8], 164, [4, of which the last 3 are blank] pp. Engraved title-page (outer margin slightly trimmed) and 33 satirical engraved illustrations. Slightly browned, wormholes in the inner margin not affecting the text, all in all a very good, genuine copy. On the front fly-leaf contemporary dedication note by a "Petr. Much." to a certain "Doctor Fredericus".FIRST EDITION, dedicated to the brothers Joannes Jacobus, Dominicus and Joannes Porsch, of the free Latin adaptation by Johann Flittner of Thomas Murner's (1475-1537) Schelmen Zunft, a collection of satirical poems first published in 1512 and inspired by Brant's famous Narrenschiff. Other editions of Nebulo Nebulonum were published in 1634, 1636, 1644 and 1663. A Dutch translation appeared in Leeuwarden in 1634 and 1645.The work is at the same time a curious emblem book, which makes fun of the customs of Flittner's time and censors the corrupt manners of his contemporary fellows, sparing no social class. If the clergy is the most heavily and frequently attacked, all professions are taken into account, especially those who use words to deceive and seduce other people like jurists, councillors, clerics, and preachers. The volume contains 33 poems, each illustrated by an allegorical engraving and accompanied by two mottoes, one for the poem and one for the plate, and by an explanation in prose. The lively illustrations, very likely designed by the publisher Johann de Zetter, show the daily life of the time, depi … [Click Below for Full Description]

JESUITS. Wierix, Hieronymus (c. 1553?1619), artist
n.p., after Jan. 1615, before, Antwerp, 1620. six plates. A Rare Suite of Fine Engravings of the Jesuit Generals By the Master Engraver Hieronymus Wierix The engravings were printed with a privilege from the assistant secretary to the Privy Council of the Archduke of the Netherlands. This privilege also appears in the plate: ?Cum gratia et privilegio Piermans.? The plates are not dated but a date of after 1615 and before 1620 can be assumed. Acquaviva?s death (Jan. 1615) is recorded on his plate; Wierix died in 1619.A complete set of these very rare engravings of the first five generals of the Jesuit Order: Ignatius of Loyola (general from 1541-1556), Diego (James) Laynez (1558-1565), St. Francis Borgia (1565-1572), Everard Mercurian (1573-1580), and Claudio Acquaviva (1581-31 January, 1615)The master engraver Hieronymus Wierix was one of three sons of the painter Jan Wierix I. Both of Hieronymus? brothers were also engravers. Hieronymus also engraved a series of scenes from the Life of Ignatius of Loyola. Such series were part of a program to promote the Jesuit push to have Ignatius canonized. By the time this series of engravings was published, the Order had achieved a crucial step in that process: the beatification of Ignatius (in 1609). That new distinction is reflected in the caption on the first plate, in which Ignatius? name is preceded by a ?B? for ?beatus? (i.e. ?blessed.?)From the time of its establishment, the Society of Jesus spread rapidly, and at the time of St. Ignatius' death had twelve provinces: Italy, Sicily, Portugal, Aragon, Castile, Andalusia, Upper Ge … [Click Below for Full Description]
