MAGINI, Giovanni Antonio
impensis ipsius Auctoris, 1620. Folio. pp (x) 24, 61 engraved maps (59 double page, 2 single) Italic letter, text within printed double-rule borders, engraved architectural t.p. by Oliviero Gatti, depicting allegorical figures of the sciences with instruments and globe within typographical border, early case no. at head, full page medallion portrait of the author dated 1632. Light water stain to earlier maps around centrefold, else a fine, large and thick paper copy, the maps in admirable, very clear impressions. In contemporary French calf, triple panels with ornamental cornerpieces to corners, all gilt, spine in eight compartments gilt (small repair at tail), edges speckled red, early paper labels 'F' and 'Italie' on upper cover. A handsome, very well margined copy of the second edition of the premier early Italian atlas, which dominated Italian cartography for at least the next half century. Most of the main C17 cartographers, including the Dutch compiler-editors, followed, copied, or incorporated Magni's regional maps, even Ortelius (with whom Magini corresponded) as well as Brahe and Kepler's and Blaeu used some of them. Magini (1555-1617) Paduan astronomer, astrologer, cartographer and mathematician studied at Bologna and famously was appointed to the chair of Mathematics there in preference to Galileo. His chef d'oeuvre however was the present atlas, designed to include a detailed map of every region of Italy with exact nomenclature and historical notes. Began in 1594 it soon proved ruinously expensive and Magini assumed the posts of astrologer to Vincenzo Gonzaga, D … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mather's opus is an indispensable source for the history of New England in the 17th century, both for its biographies and its history of civil, religious, and military affairs. Much of the book's value rests in its incomparable wealth of detail regarding daily life in early colonial New England. David Hall has referred to it as "a mirror of the 1690's," the decade in which most of it was written. CAMPANELLA Tommaso
demonstratur, Mundum esse Dei vivam statuam, beneque cognosentem. Omnesque illius partes.e fere omnium Naturae arcanorum rationes aperiuntur. Tobias Adami recensuit, et nunc primum evulgavit. Francofurti, apud Egenolphum Emmelium, impensis Godefridi Tampachij, M.DC.XX. in-4 (mm 220x155), pp.(16), 372 (ultima bianca), leg. coeva in pergamena. - "His 'Description of the Wonderful Table of Logarithms' is unique in the history of science in that a great discovery was the result of the unaided original speculation of one individual without precursors and almost without contemporaries in his field. The essence of Napier's method is his ingenious use of a relation between an arithmetical and a geometrical progression. Unlike modern logarithms, however, Napier's decrease as the numbers increase. Also his logarithms had no explicit 'base'" (PMM). He has published numerous globes, land and sea maps together with Jodocus Hondius and Johannes Janssonius in Antwerp. From 1666, Pieter Goos, his son, also published a number of well produced atlases. He was the first to map Christmas Island, which he labelled "Mony" in his map of the East Indies, published in his 1666 Zee-Atlas (Sea Atlas). His Atlas ofte Water-Weereld (Atlas or Water World) has been cited as one of the best maritime atlases of its time. Another of his fine works was the Oost Indien (East Indies) map published in 1680. Pilot books, which contained a large number of navigation charts, were published by many authors, including Goos. He had a notarized agreement with two others, Jacob Lootsman and Hendrick Doncker, to publish pilot books for navigation along the Mediterranean coast, also covering easterly and westerly navigational routes. These were called the Dutch pilot books and remained valid for the period from 1643 to 1680. Goos was also instrumental in publishing the first pilot book for coastlines outside Europe. A further improvement over the pilot books in Dutch cartography was the publication of sea atlases covering the whole world. Initiated in 1659 by Doncker, the approach was also adopted by Goos from 1666. One of his large … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

He is best known for his early maps of the New World and Europe, for re-establishing the reputation of the work of Gerard Mercator, and for his portraits of Francis Drake. He helped establish Amsterdam as the center of cartography in Europe in the 17th century. He was born in Wakken and grew up in Ghent. In his early years he established himself as an engraver, instrument maker and globe maker. In 1584 he moved to London to escape religious difficulties in Flanders. While in England, Hondius was instrumental in publicizing the work of Francis Drake, who had made a circumnavigation of the world in the late 1570s. In particular, in 1589 Hondius produced a now famous map of the bay of New Albion, where Drake briefly established a settlement on the west coast of North America. Hondius' map was based on journal and eyewitness accounts of the trip and has long fueled speculation about the precise location of Drake's landing, which has not yet been firmly established by historians. Hondius is also thought to be the artist of several well-known portraits of Drake that are now in the National Portrait Gallery in London. In 1593 he moved to Amsterdam, where he remained until the end of his life. 1620". In-8 de (1)f. de titre, 396pp., (20)ff. : table des matières. [Click Below for Full Description]
