The Workes of Lucius Annaeus Seneca newly inlarged and corrected by Thomas Lodge.

London, printed by William Stansby, 1620. Folio; 18 hs., 921 pp., 9 hs.

Series of six copper engravings of floral bouquets in vases.

[Paris, 1620s]. 245 x 175 mm. Half calf, gilt spine with floral ornaments and red gilt lettered label, marbled boards. An extremely rare suite of very beautiful bouquets in ornamental vases with grotesques, based on an equally rare group of larger prints by Jean Theodor de Bry. The vases are depicted surrounded by insects and other small animals, on a table-top. The plates are numbered lower left from 1 to 6 and the first engraving is signed on the table top in front to the left: 'I. Messager, excudit' and to the right 'I. Pictet Incidit'. The other plates are signed to the left 'I Messager. ex.' (or with minor variations). Each plate has a ribbon below the vase with a Latin inscription. The inscriptions, on the theme of transience, comprise a emblematic text in hexameters based on the six Latin declensions of the word 'Flos', or flower, and involve punning and word play. They translate as follows: 1. The Flower as a mirror of life: no sooner does it flower than it withers with a breath. 6. The quickly changing image of the Flower warns us of the swift passage of time. 3. The tender youth is like a Flower with advancing years. 4. Displaying the Flower [of youth] at the same time he bears the fruit [of maturity]. 2. Oh Flower, thus flowering in the youthful summer. 5. Follow the Flower's lead to a virtuous life. The change in order accords with the original series after which this set has been copied, with the images in reverse. The originals were a series of six larger prints by Jan Theodor de Bry (Liege 1561 - 1623 Frankfurt), produced in Frankfurt-am-Main about 1604 and titled Polyptoton de Flore (The many-sidedness of the Flower). Both the de Bry and the Messager suites are extremely rare. An incomplete set by Messager is in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. Some marginal staining and some glue stains from previous binding, old ms. numbering from a larger collection of bound engravings from which this has at some time been extracted.         Syntagma Tragoediae Latinae in tres partes distinctum.

Tagli dorati. Frontespizio in rosso e in nero con vignetta calcografica. Testatine, finalini e iniziali ornate in silografia. Fittissimi indici su duplice colonna in fine.

Very rare first edition, and a fine copy, "of one of the fullest German works on surveying" (Zeitlinger), containing an early and highly detailed account of how to make Galileo's geometrical compass. This work on geometry, surveying, geometric instruments, mathematical tables, map making etc., gives a full account of the mathematical and geometrical practice in central Europe in the early seventeenth century. Johann Ardüser, highly esteemed by his contemporaries, was in charge of the fortifications of Zürich from 1620, and published several works on fortification and geometry. <br/><br/> After introductory chapters on Euclidean geometry and arithmetic the author gives a detailed description (with one plate) of the use and construction of the sector (<i>Cirkelleiter</i>) which is based on Galileo's invention (<i>dessen erfinder Galileo de Galilei von vilen geachtet wird</i>, leaf 53 verso). Illustrations of Galileo's sector, a sort of primitive analog calculating machine, were kept secret by its inventor to protect the 'copyright'. Until 1640 there was no authorized illustration of Galileo's <i>compasso</i>. "Galileo's sector became a calculating instrument capable of solving quickly and easily every practical mathematical problem that was likely to arise at the time" (Drake, <i>Galileo at work</i>, p. 45). <br/><br/> The second plate shows a magnetic compass, accompanied by the description of its use, followed by lengthy chapters on applied geometry, the making of ground plans and measurements of mountains and buildings. <br/><br/> Honeyman 137; Kenney 4078; Poggendorff 1:58<br/><br/> OCLC: Getty; UCB; Illinois; Michigan; Harvard; Trexler.. 4to (196 x 154 mm), 286 leaves (including engraved title page), ll. [vi] 1-279 [1:errata] plus two folding engraved plates. Contemporary vellum over wooden boards, very light browning to some gatherings but in general exceptionally clean and fine throughout, including the folding plates. Entirely unrestored in its original condition, a very fine copy of this rare work

        Haag, 1655.

4:o. 8 s. Lagerfläckig. Liten fläck orsakande bokstavsförlust på s. 4. Häftad och oskuren med naggade råkanter. Ur Ericsbergs bibliotek. Klemming, Sveriges förhållanden, s. 116. Warmholtz 4513.

tradotte per M. Lodovico Domenichi.., 2 vols, a1-I3 (index), 1011pp; a1-e3 (index), 536pp thick quarto, 47 fine engraved woodcut portraits, a few minor blemishes but a very good copy in contemporary calf-backed marbled boards (one label missing, marbled paper rubbed) Venice, Appresso Marco Ginami,1620, 1607.A photograph of this book can be sent on request. The best early Italian version of Plutarch's Lives, translated by Ludovico Domenichi and incorporating his final corrections, with a life of the author by Thomaso Porcacchi and rechecked against the Greek text by Leonardo Ghini of Cortona. "The influence of Plutarch's method has been constantly manifest in the biographies of the modern great and in the authors who have been inspired by it. Shakespeare relied almost exclusively on Plutarch for the historical background of ancient Rome, and it is a very fair compliment to the genius of Plutarch that such magic as the departure of Anthony from Alexandria can be wrought from it" - Printing and the Mind of Man 48.

Sebastiano Bononi Bologna: Sebastiano Bononi, 1620. unbound. very good. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 13.5" x 17 15/16". Beautifully detailed map of Brescia and its mountainous environs in Lombardy. Shows Lake Garda and Lake Iseo and features ornate architectural cartouches. North is oriented to the right. Minor staining to margins and a tear to bottom edge. Magini (1555-1617) was an Italian humanist and professor of astronomy. This rare map was published in his seminal work, "Italia", the first printed atlas of Italy. Although he had been compiling the atlas since 1594, Magini died before its publication. His son Fabio continued his efforts and the first edition was eventually printed by Sebastiano Bononi. For much of the 17th century "Italia" was hailed as the leading primary source of regional Italian maps and their continued use by notable mapmakers such as Blaeu and Ortelius sustained Magini's legend.

        KRIEGS UND ARCHELEY KUNST

Frankfurt: Lukas Jennis [second part: Jakob de Zetter], 1620. First Edition in German. 292 x 191 mm (11 1/2 x 7 1/2"). 6 p.l., 145, [3] pp.; 4 p.l., 71, [5] pp. Two parts in one volume. VERY FINE LATE 18TH CENTURY TREE CALF, flat spine handsomely gilt in compartments filled with closely spaced horizontal rows of alternating strapwork and flowing floral and foliate stamps, reddish-orange morocco label. Historiated headpieces and tailpieces, both title pages attractively framed with a design of military implements, and WITH 24 DOUBLE-PAGE ENGRAVED MILITARY PLATES, 15 accompanying the first section and nine the second. Front pastedown with the armorial bookplate of Lt. Gen. G. L. Parker (the fourth Earl of Macclesfield), and front free endpaper with the similar armorial bookplate of the Macclesfield Library, first three leaves with small embossed Macclesfield stamp. Cockle 663. Bottom of second title page just barely touched by binder's knife, three gatherings with inoffensive dampstain at lower inner margin, light offsetting on some of the plates, a handful of leaves (including the first title) with light overall browning, additional trivial defects, otherwise A REALLY FINE COPY, the lovely binding lustrous and scarcely worn, and the text very clean and exceptionally fresh. This is a rare copy of the first German version of Girolamo Ruscelli's "Precetti della Militia Moderna," describing different types of military equipment, especially cannons and various other forms of projectile weaponry. The first part concentrates on artillery, and the second on the manufacturing of rockets and mines. The plates illustrate battlefield explosives as well as fireworks and diving equipment, and illustrations of projectiles are particularly intriguing, being done in a style that makes them look at once primitive and lethal. When our work first appeared is a bit of a mystery. Cockle says that Mariano d'Ayala (in his "Bibliografia Militare-Italiana Antica e Moderna") claims to know of editions printed in 1548 and 1562, but the earliest one known for certain is the 1568 edition, which appeared two years after Ruscelli died. The title page tells us that our author compiled his material from the works of Baptista de la Valle Venafrano, Alexandro Capo Bianco, and other Italian military authors. The works by the named writers--as well as all editions of the present book--are extremely rare. It is certainly probable that Ruscelli culled his information from earlier sources, as he was a literary man, not a soldier. Born in Viterbo in humble circumstances, Ruscelli (1500-66) migrated first to Rome and then to Venice, where he corrected proofs in the printing house of Valgrisi. A friend of Bernardo Tasso, Ruscelli was one of the few to recognize early the genius of Bernardo's son Torquato. Like a number of military books from the Macclesfield library, this one is in almost amazing internal condition as well as in an extremely pretty tree calf binding commissioned ca. 1790 by General Parker.

Logorithmorum Canonis Descriptio, Seu Arithmeticarum Supputationum Mirabilis abbreviatio. [- Sequitur Tabula Canonis Logarithmorum; Mirifici Logarithmorum Canonis construction; Annotationibus aliquot &#133; Henrici Briggii]

Lyons: Bartholomaeus Vincentius, 1620. Second (first obtainable) edition of his &#145;Contructio&#146; (Horblit 77b, 1619), with the first Continental edition of the &#145;Descriptio&#146; (Horblit 77a, 1614) &#150; &#147;The work which in the history of British science can be placed as second only to Newton&#146;s Principia&#148; (Evans 4). <br/><br/> & & &#147;His &#145;Description of the Wonderful Table of Logarithms&#146; is unique in the history of science in that a great discovery was the result of the unaided original speculation of one individual without precursors and almost without contemporaries in his field.&#148; (PMM 116). <br/><br/>& & &#147;Logarithms provided a most important advance in the art of calculation because they reduced multiplication and division to a process of addition and subtraction, and extraction of roots to division.&#148; (Dibner 106). <br/><br/>& & &#147;Napier&#146;s invention of logarithms was immediately adopted by mathematicians both in England and on the continent, including Briggs and Ursinus, who introduced logarithms to Kepler.&#148; (Norman). Kepler &#147;expressed his enthusiasm in a letter to Napier dated 28 July 1619, printed in the dedication of his &#145;Ephemerides&#146;, 1620.&#148; (DSB). <br/><br/>& & The &#145;Descriptio&#146; &#147;contains fifty-seven pages of text explaining the uses of logarithms in both plane and spherical trigonometry and ninety pages of tables. The method of producing the table was not described, but Napier indicated that should this work be suitably received, he would publish another (the Constructio) on how they were calculated. &#133; He died before he could complete the task, but his son Robert Napier completed and published it in 1619. Napier&#146;s 1614 publication is always referred to as the &#145;Descriptio&#146;, and the 1619 volume as the &#145;Constructio&#146;.&#148; (Tomash). <br/><br/>& & &#147;Napier also did work in spherical trigonometry and in his &#145;Rabdologiae seu Numerationes per Virgulas libri II&#146;, Edinburgh, 1617, announced another important invention, &#145;Napier&#146;s Bones&#146;. These were rods which could be used to find the product of two numbers in a mechanical way, the quotient of one number divided by another, and square and cube roots. They were the precursors of seventeenth-century and modern calculating machines.&#148; (PMM). &#147;Mechanized addition and substraction were introduced in 1642 by Pascal, then 19 years old.&#148; (Dibner 107). <br/><br/>& This edition (the second of the &#145;Constructio&#146; and first Continental edition of the &#145;Descriptio&#146;) was published together with a small appendix containing annotations by Henry Briggs on base-ten logarithms (see Norman 339). <br/><br/>Presumably most readers were concerned mainly by the applications of logarithms, their construction being of interest only to mathematicians and compilers of tables. While the Descriptio was reprinted many times, and translated into English as early as 1616, the Constructio had to wait until 1889 before an English translation was produced. The offered work is the first reprinting of the two works and is today the earliest accessible edition of the Constructio (the Macclesfield copy of the 1619 edition appears to be the only copy to have appeared at auction in the past 30 years). The last copy of the first edition of the Descriptio sold for $72,000 (Christie&#39;s 2007.)<br/><br/>& & In a very few copies of the Lyons edition the title page of the Descriptio carries the date 1619. MacDonald remarks: &#147;On the issue of the Edinburgh edition of 1619, Barthold Vincent would appear to have set out at once about the preparation of an edition for issue at Lyon with the date 1619 on the title. ......A possible explanation of this may be that the title-page was originally set up with the date MDCIX, but when it was found that the whole work could not be issued in that year, the date was altered to MDCXX, and a few copies may have been printed before the alteration. The only copy we have found is in the Bibliotheque Nationale.&#148;<br/><br/>& & This edition: Honeyman 2292; Erwin Tomash Library N5; Kenney 3071; Macdonald pp.141-43. Three parts in one vol. (as issued), 4to (190 x 128 mm), pp. [viii], 56; [92: tables]; 62, title printed in red and black, mildly browned, some gatherings with a small worm whole trace in the upper right corner (not effecting text), in all a good copy in a fine contemporary vellum binding.

Bound in a beautiful recent full long-grained red morocco with raised bands, an immitation of a Renaissance-binding. Boards with rectangular blind-tooled line-borders, blind-tooled decorations and corner-pieces. All edges gilt. Title-page with broad engraved title-border. Dedication (4) pp. - Vorrede (12) pp. and 462 pp. of text and last leaf (recto) with large woodcut printer's device, year, printer, and publisher. Engraved portrait of Ramelli (engraved by Andreas Breitschneider anno 1620 after the original) and 195 engravings (numb. 1-195) of which 14 are on plates, 8 double-page, the others in full-page (except no. 148/49 on one). Engravings in sharp good impressions. Slightly paper-browned and a few scattered brownspots. Old name on bottom of title-page. Dedication-leaves with old underlinings.. First (and only) German edition of Ramelli's remarkable landmark work of Renaissance technology, which anticipated many devices that were successfully manufactured centuries later. Only two editions of this work were published, the original from 1588 (Paris) with text and explanations in both Italian and French, and this German translation for which the illustrations were re-engraved by Andreas Bretschneider, preserving the details of the illustrations, for which the work is so well known. The German edition is very rare, and both are esteemed and sought after. The engravings, which are among the most frequently reproduced in scientific and technological literature, depict pump design, mill construction, hydraulic machinery, all manners of derricks, looms, cranes, saws, siege machinery, fortification and foundry equipment. There is also an illustration of an elaborate "book-wheel" or reading machine."Another work even more remarkable, in that it anticipated with detailed sketches a number of devices which were successfully manufactured and marketed two or three centuries later, is "Le Diverse et Artificiose Machine del Capitano Agostino Ramelli", published in Paris in 1588. Ramelli (1530?-90) gained his capacity for service under the Marquis de Marignan, who quite possibly studied under Leonardo da Vinci. The handsome quarto volume contained one hundred and ninety-five full-page illustrations, artistically rendered, and described both in French and Italian." (Wolf, A History of Science, Technology and Philosophy in the 16th and 17th Centuries, II:539). Ramelli was a true man of the Renaissance. He was greatly influenced by the increasing importance placed upon mathematics and geometry as an important tool for engineers and artists, and particularly by the writings of Guidobaldo del Monte (1545-1607) and Petrus Ramus (1515-1572). Ramelli's interest in mathematics is demonstrated in the preface to his book, "On the excellence of mathematics", in which he shows the necessary of mathematics to the learning of all liberal arts.Ramelli was captain of engineers to the kings of France and Poland. His reputation grew and he eventually left France to serve under the Duke of Anjou, later King Henry III.         Territorio di Orvieto

Sebastiano Bononi Bologna: Sebastiano Bononi, 1620. unbound. very good. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 13 7/8" x 17 5/8". Beautifully detailed map of Orvieto in Umbria. Shows Lake Bolsena and features ornate cartouches. Minor toning to centerfold and a small chip to bottom edge.

Franckfurt, Jacobi di Zetter, 1620. Folio. Old full vellum made out of manuscript vellum leaves (from 15th century with letters in red and black, 1 coloured initial, 2 columns, a bible-commentary). Re-backed, 3/4 of the old vellum-back preserved. Remains of blue and yellow ties. Fine engraved pictorial title (canons, equipment etc.), (12),145,(3) pp. and 15 double-page engraved plates, 8 showing artillery in function, technical descriptions, and diving equipments shown on plate 14 !!) - Second Part with fine engraved title (showing bombs and fireworks),(8),71,(5) pp. and 9 double-page engraved plates showing different kinds of fireworks. A few, mainly marginal brownspots and some faint browning to leaves. With exlibris from "Comit: Fuggeri 1630 (?)" in old hand on title. On fol. 2 a later rubberstamp: "Fürstliche Fuggersche Bibliothek in Augsburg".. First German edition, complete with 24 engraved plates. The first part deals mainly with the artillery and its technical aspects and the second part with fireworks; the constituents and constructions are described on 71 pages and depicted. The diving equipments depicted on plate 14 in the first part consist of an inflated bladder which is attached to a belt and an iron-head with a long snorkel and some air-pumps used for diving activities. The Italian physician, alchemist and cartographer, Alexis of Piedmont or Girolamo Ruscelli, was born in Viterbo, Italy around 1500 (perhaps earlier), and died in Venice, Italy around 1565. He is (probably) the author of the important "Secreti", published in 1555, and the "Secreti Nuovi", published in 1567, the first of which was extremely popular and of considerable influence, the second of which must be said to be of the greatest interest, but apparently not very widely read. He also translated the Geography of Ptolemy into Italian, and his books on war and fire-works are now quite scarce. Most of his works were popular in his life-time and the century to come, and they were translated into Latin, German, French and Welsh. At a very early point he indicated the plan of a scientific academy, and he must be said to be a very interesting 16th century scientist
