Second (first obtainable) edition of his &#145;Contructio&#146; (Horblit 77b, 1619), with the first Continental edition of the &#145;Descriptio&#146; (Horblit 77a, 1614) &#150; &#147;The work which in the history of British science can be placed as second only to Newton&#146;s Principia&#148; (Evans 4). <br/><br/> & & &#147;His &#145;Description of the Wonderful Table of Logarithms&#146; is unique in the history of science in that a great discovery was the result of the unaided original speculation of one individual without precursors and almost without contemporaries in his field.&#148; (PMM 116). <br/><br/>& & &#147;Logarithms provided a most important advance in the art of calculation because they reduced multiplication and division to a process of addition and subtraction, and extraction of roots to division.&#148; (Dibner 106). <br/><br/>& & &#147;Napier&#146;s invention of logarithms was immediately adopted by mathematicians both in England and on the continent, including Briggs and Ursinus, who introduced logarithms to Kepler.&#148; (Norman). Kepler &#147;expressed his enthusiasm in a letter to Napier dated 28 July 1619, printed in the dedication of his &#145;Ephemerides&#146;, 1620.&#148; (DSB). <br/><br/>& & The &#145;Descriptio&#146; &#147;contains fifty-seven pages of text explaining the uses of logarithms in both plane and spherical trigonometry and ninety pages of tables. The method of producing the table was not described, but Napier indicated that should this work be suitably received, he would publish another (the Constructio) on how they were calculated. &#133; He died before he could complete the task, but his son Robert Napier completed and published it in 1619. Napier&#146;s 1614 publication is always referred to as the &#145;Descriptio&#146;, and the 1619 volume as the &#145;Constructio&#146;.&#148; (Tomash). <br/><br/>& & &#147;Napier also did work in spherical trigonometry and in his &#145;Rabdologiae seu Numerationes per Virgulas libri II&#146;, Edinburgh, 1617, announced another important invention, &#145;Napier&#146;s Bones&#146;. These were rods which could be used to find the product of two numbers in a mechanical way, the quotient of one number divided by another, and square and cube roots. They were the precursors of seventeenth-century and modern calculating machines.&#148; (PMM). &#147;Mechanized addition and substraction were introduced in 1642 by Pascal, then 19 years old.&#148; (Dibner 107). <br/><br/>& This edition (the second of the &#145;Constructio&#146; and first Continental edition of the &#145;Descriptio&#146;) was published together with a small appendix containing annotations by Henry Briggs on base-ten logarithms (see Norman 339). <br/><br/>Presumably most readers were concerned mainly by the applications of logarithms, their construction being of interest only to mathematicians and compilers of tables. While the Descriptio was reprinted many times, and translated into English as early as 1616, the Constructio had to wait until 1889 before an English translation was produced. The offered work is the first reprinting of the two works and is today the earliest accessible edition of the Constructio (the Macclesfield copy of the 1619 edition appears to be the only copy to have appeared at auction in the past 30 years). The last copy of the first edition of the Descriptio sold for $72,000 (Christie&#39;s 2007.)<br/><br/>& & In a very few copies of the Lyons edition the title page of the Descriptio carries the date 1619. MacDonald remarks: &#147;On the issue of the Edinburgh edition of 1619, Barthold Vincent would appear to have set out at once about the preparation of an edition for issue at Lyon with the date 1619 on the title. ......A possible explanation of this may be that the title-page was originally set up with the date MDCIX, but when it was found that the whole work could not be issued in that year, the date was altered to MDCXX, and a few copies may have been printed before the alteration. Bound in a beautiful recent full long-grained red morocco with raised bands, an immitation of a Renaissance-binding. Boards with rectangular blind-tooled line-borders, blind-tooled decorations and corner-pieces. All edges gilt. Title-page with broad engraved title-border. Dedication (4) pp. - Vorrede (12) pp. and 462 pp. of text and last leaf (recto) with large woodcut printer's device, year, printer, and publisher. Engraved portrait of Ramelli (engraved by Andreas Breitschneider anno 1620 after the original) and 195 engravings (numb. 1-195) of which 14 are on plates, 8 double-page, the others in full-page (except no. 148/49 on one). Engravings in sharp good impressions. Slightly paper-browned and a few scattered brownspots. Old name on bottom of title-page. Dedication-leaves with old underlinings.. First (and only) German edition of Ramelli's remarkable landmark work of Renaissance technology, which anticipated many devices that were successfully manufactured centuries later. Only two editions of this work were published, the original from 1588 (Paris) with text and explanations in both Italian and French, and this German translation for which the illustrations were re-engraved by Andreas Bretschneider, preserving the details of the illustrations, for which the work is so well known. The German edition is very rare, and both are esteemed and sought after. The engravings, which are among the most frequently reproduced in scientific and technological literature, depict pump design, mill construction, hydraulic machinery, all manners of derricks, looms, cranes, saws, siege machinery, fortification and foundry equipment. There is also an illustration of an elaborate "book-wheel" or reading machine."Another work even more remarkable, in that it anticipated with detailed sketches a number of devices which were successfully manufactured and marketed two or three centuries later, is "Le Diverse et Artificiose Machine del Capitano Agostino Ramelli", published in Paris in 1588. Ramelli (1530?-90) gained his capacity for service under the Marquis de Marignan, who quite possibly studied under Leonardo da Vinci. The handsome quarto volume contained one hundred and ninety-five full-page illustrations, artistically rendered, and described both in French and Italian." (Wolf, A History of Science, Technology and Philosophy in the 16th and 17th Centuries, II:539). Ramelli was a true man of the Renaissance. He was greatly influenced by the increasing importance placed upon mathematics and geometry as an important tool for engineers and artists, and particularly by the writings of Guidobaldo del Monte (1545-1607) and Petrus Ramus (1515-1572). Ramelli's interest in mathematics is demonstrated in the preface to his book, "On the excellence of mathematics", in which he shows the necessary of mathematics to the learning of all liberal arts.Ramelli was captain of engineers to the kings of France and Poland. His reputation grew and he eventually left France to serve under the Duke of Anjou, later King Henry III.         Territorio di Orvieto

      Sebastiano Bononi Bologna: Sebastiano Bononi, 1620. unbound. very good. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 13 7/8" x 17 5/8". Beautifully detailed map of Orvieto in Umbria. Shows Lake Bolsena and features ornate cartouches. Minor toning to centerfold and a small chip to bottom edge. Magini (1555-1617) was an Italian humanist and professor of astronomy. This rare map was published in his seminal work, "Italia", the first printed atlas of Italy. Although he had been compiling the atlas since 1594, Magini died before its publication. His son Fabio continued his efforts and the first edition was eventually printed by Sebastiano Bononi. For much of the 17th century "Italia" was hailed as the leading primary source of regional Italian maps and their continued use by notable mapmakers such as Blaeu and Ortelius sustained Magini's legend.

Legatura strettamente coeva in piena pergamena floscia con nervi passanti. Sguardie posteriori. Esemplare fresco, genuino ed in ottimo stato di conservazione. Alcune interessanti annotazioni manoscritte di mano coeva limitate a poche carte. Seconda edizione (dopo l'originale del 1610) di questo classico della letteratura militare. Cfr. Choix, 6201: ""Ouvrage assez rare et très important. Les planches en grand format représentent les ordres de bataille, la manière de l'attaque des fortifications etc."".

Old full vellum made out of manuscript vellum leaves (from 15th century with letters in red and black, 1 coloured initial, 2 columns, a bible-commentary). Re-backed, 3/4 of the old vellum-back preserved. Remains of blue and yellow ties. Fine engraved pictorial title (canons, equipment etc.), (12),145,(3) pp. and 15 double-page engraved plates, 8 showing artillery in function, technical descriptions, and diving equipments shown on plate 14 !!) - Second Part with fine engraved title (showing bombs and fireworks),(8),71,(5) pp. and 9 double-page engraved plates showing different kinds of fireworks. A few, mainly marginal brownspots and some faint browning to leaves. With exlibris from "Comit: Fuggeri 1630 (?)" in old hand on title. On fol. 2 a later rubberstamp: "Fürstliche Fuggersche Bibliothek in Augsburg".. First German edition, complete with 24 engraved plates. The first part deals mainly with the artillery and its technical aspects and the second part with fireworks; the constituents and constructions are described on 71 pages and depicted. The diving equipments depicted on plate 14 in the first part consist of an inflated bladder which is attached to a belt and an iron-head with a long snorkel and some air-pumps used for diving activities.The Italian physician, alchemist and cartographer, Alexis of Piedmont or Girolamo Ruscelli, was born in Viterbo, Italy around 1500 (perhaps earlier), and died in Venice, Italy around 1565. He is (probably) the author of the important "Secreti", published in 1555, and the "Secreti Nuovi", published in 1567, the first of which was extremely popular and of considerable influence, the second of which must be said to be of the greatest interest, but apparently not very widely read. He also translated the Geography of Ptolemy into Italian, and his books on war and fire-works are now quite scarce. Most of his works were popular in his life-time and the century to come, and they were translated into Latin, German, French and Welsh. At a very early point he indicated the plan of a scientific academy, and he must be said to be a very interesting 16th century scientist
