GOETEERIS, Anthonis.
Tiele, Bibl. 391 note; WorldCat (2 copies); cf. Adelung II, pp. 258-271 (1619 issue); Muller, Bibl. Neerlando-Russe 118 (1619 issue); STCN (1619 & 1639 issues). Last and rarest (1640) issue of the first (and only early) edition of a richly illustrated and extremely interesting and important account of a Dutch embassy to Russia in the years 1615 to 1616: an essential primary source for any study of 17th-century Russia (and Scandinavia). The 23 etched views are among the earliest of northwest Russia and its border areas. It was first published in 1619 by Aert Meuris and both the text and the illustrations are here still in the 1619 printing, with only the two title-pages newly printed (in spite of the title-page's "second printing, enlarged and improved"!), so that the beautifully drawn and finely etched illustrations remain crisp and clear.Sweden and Russia had been at war since 1609 and both sides suffered severe losses in the 1615 siege of Pskov (which weakened Sweden's position). The English ambassador in Moscow, John Merrick, initiated peace negotiations and King Gustav II Adolf and Tsar Michael I together asked the States General of the Dutch Republic to send an embassy to Novgorod to assist them. The peace they brokered, leading to the 1617 treaty of Stolbovo, was to last nearly a hundred years. Anthonis Goeteeris (ca. 1574-1660?), bailiff of the Hoge Raad, accompanied the embassy as treasurer and, being a skilled artist, also made numerous drawings. The embassy travelled first by ship to Reval (now Tallin, Estonia) then overland via Narva (Estonia) to the regions arou … [Click Below for Full Description]

[GALILEI, Galileo]
Woodcut device of the Medicean stars on title & two woodcut diagrams in the text. 2 p.l., 54 pp., one blank leaf. Small 4to, late 19th-cent. green diced morocco, arms of the House of Visconti in gilt within a richly decorated border, spine richly gilt, a.e.g. Florence: P. Cecconcelli, 1619. First edition and a very fine copy. Although published under the name of his pupil and assistant Mario Guiducci (1585-1646), the present book is actually the work of Galileo (the autograph manuscript survives). It is a concealed reply to the attack of the Jesuit Orazio Grassi's De Tribus Cometis, published earlier in the same year, and marks the beginning of Galileo's long controversy with Scheiner and the other Jesuit astronomers over the comet of 1618. The dispute continued for several years and resulted in Galileo's scientific manifesto Il Saggiatore (1623) which contains his most important ideas on the philosophy of scientific investigation. In addition to a description of the comets of 1618, Galileo discusses the satellites of Jupiter, the uses of the telescope, fixed stars not visible to the naked eye, etc. ❧ Carli & Favaro 80. BEAUVAU, Henri de
Nancy: Iacob Garnich, 1619. An attractive copy of Beauvau?s 1605 expedition through Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Palestine and Egypt, one of the most substantially illustrated French travelogues of the first half of the 17th century relating to the Near East. Of special note is Beauvau?s use of cartographic illustration suggestive of the Italian isolarios of the period: the 49 maps and views of Aegean islands, etc., engraved in the manner of Bertelli and Camocio, remind us that at this early date France did not as yet have a very well developed cartographic style, forcing publishers to look for models elsewhere?namely Italy, where the Italians had been publishing isolarios for more than a century. The plates, however, were engraved by a Frenchman, Jean Appier Hanzelet, of Lorraine, a very good engraver who is best known for his book on pyrotechnics with memorable illustrations in a kindred style.Beauvau describes many religious landmarks and holy sites (this edition includes floor plans of the more important churches in Jerusalem) as well as providing details on peoples of various faiths he encountered during his travels. Mentioned in the Relation are a number of legendary boulders and stones in Palestine which bear curious markings, allegedly the imprints of the bodies of three apostles on stones in the Garden of Gethsemane and of St. Jerome?s body in the desert (p. 148).Henri de Beauvau, a soldier and diplomat, fought the Turks in Hungary first in the service of Emperor Rudolph III, and then under the elector of Bavaria. He embarked upon this journey in 1605, regarding it as a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hartmut Jericke
DRW.

YORKSHIRE INDENTURE (1619). Manuscript on parchment
Newfield, County York, England, 1619 . Manuscript on vellum. Fine legal hand with full details; 42 lines of bold flourishing script on a very fine skin with Gothic letter. In very good condition, well preserved (even, mild discoloration). Measures 23.5" (60 cm) x 13.5" (34 cm). Folded and creased at an early date A extraordinary 1619 English "DEMISE FOR 3000 YEARS" ~ written on parchment ~ being an Indenture (legal document) dated 3rd. May 1619 at Newfield, the County of York between Alan & Roger Carr, and Thomas Brayshaie in the County of York. * A Demise was the transfer of an estate by lease, esp. for a fixed period implying a covenant "for quiet enjoyment." The conveyance or transfer of an estate, either in fee for life or for years, most commonly the latter. A Demise is basically a "lease", or the right to exclusive occupation for a set period. * Clearly the participants of the present Indenture are ALAN CARR and his son ROGER CARR of Closehouse, Parrish of Giggleswick (Yorkshire). Roger's Last Will and Testatment of 1621 is recorded in the Borthwick Institute (University of York) Langcliffe Wills vol. 36 fol. 634. Alan's Last Will and Testament of 1626 appears in Borthwick vol. 39 fol. 129. The Last Will and Testament of Thomas Brayshaw, likewise of Gigglewisck, was dated 1606 and is recorded in Borthwick vol. 30 fol. 162. * The wavy curve along the top edge is the actual "Indenture" whereby a previously conjoined parchment skin was separated into two documents. Authenticity was determined by comparing the two Indentures together.

Dietz, Franca
493 S. Mit zahlr. auch farb. Abb. Fadengehefteter Originalpappband. (vergl. Brunet III, 762).François de Maucroix, born in Noyon, (Oise) in 1619, died 1708, was a French poet and translator. He was a long-time friend of La Fontaine their mutual literary influence was very important, and it was to him that La Fontaine addressed The first book of fables (III), The Miller, his Son and the Ass. He was ordained as a priest, and in the Spring of 1647, he purchased a prebendary. He remained canon of Rheims until his death in 1708. Contrary to the popular legend, de Maucroix was not definitely a classmate of La Fontaines at Chateau Thierry. Pierre Clarac has remarked that, at about the age of 25, while they were a part of the Knights of the Round Table (Literary Circle), who were a group of (robins?) who met from 1646 to discuss their works and diverse other subjects, that although being on first-name term with Pellison and Cassandre, Maucroix still used the more formal vous w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Philipp CLUVER
Francoforte. Item Sardinia et Corsica" edito a Leida, Elzevier, 1619. Incisione in rame in perette condizioni. L. Dufour - A. La Gumina, "Imago Siciliae", p. 106 Dimensioni 270 290mm [Attributes: First Edition]
