SCACCIA, Sigismondo (1564?-1634)
Jacopo Mascardi per Andrea Brugiotti, 1619. In folio (mm 205x308); pp. (8), 755, (125). Senza legatura. [Click Below for Full Description]

[manuscript; original artwork]
1619. 1916-1960. Paperback. Fine. 16 loose leaves, folded once to create 64 pages (each page about 7-by-9 inches); contains 25 extraordinary drawings of aardvarks and ant-eaters, rendered in bright blue or black ink, frequently in an etched or cross-hatched style reminiscent of woodcuts. With handwritten captions in Russian, Latvian, English, and German, and dated from 1916-1960. Studies of the animals in the wild or captivity, drawn perhaps from life, but also from other images, such as "The young ant-bear or aardvark, and its foster-parent. The illustrated London News, Sept. 5, 1936." (The foster parent, by the way, is a human.) All drawings are remarkably bold and adept, the bright blue in particular lends an air of pop or modern art, while others are more formal or refined. Unique, and simply wonderful.

ARISTOTLE.
Lutetiae Parisorum Typis Regus. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. 4 volumes in 2. Folio, 400 x 247 mms., pp. [xxxii], 572 573 - 1251 [1252 blank, 1253 - 1286 Index]; [iv], 131 [132 blank], 470 471 - 1104 [1105 - 1136 Index], title-pages in red and black, with portrait vignette of Aristotle on each title-page, contemporary mottled calf, gilt spine; spines cracked but firm, binding dried and a bit worn, with the bookplate of the Association of Convent Schools on the recto of the front free end-paper in each volume. In The Canterbury Tales (1387 - 1400) Geoffrey Chaucer introduced the "general reader" to Aristotle in the persona of the "Clerk of Oxenford," who "For hym was levere have at his beddes heed/ Twenty bookes, clad in blak or reed,/ Of Aristotle and his philosophie." Thomas De Quincey finished "our system of metaphysics by roofing the whole with Duval's enormous Aristotle." My favoritive, however, is that from Bertrand Russell: "Aristotle could have avoided the mistake of thinking that women have fewer teeth than men, by the simple device of asking Mrs. Aristotle to keep her mouth open while he counted. He did not do so because he thought he knew." Joseph William Moss in his Manual of Classical Bibliography (1837) wrote that this edition, "This edition is the best, and most esteemed, which has yet appeared, of this philosopher; we could not have any great opinion of it were we to judge by the mediocrity of its price, and the little estimation in which it is held in commerce, where copies, except they are in very good preservation, have little value attached to them." The life … [Click Below for Full Description]

ANDREAE. Johann Valentin (1586-1654)].
- 12mo (132 x 75 mm). Pergamentband d. Z., hs. Rückentitel (ohen die Schliessbänder). Strasbourg, Erben von Lazar Zetzner, 1619 [resp. 1615]. [Click Below for Full Description]

Valdesi - PERRIN Jean Paul.
[Click Below for Full Description]

[Biblia arabica - VT - Psalmi].
1619. 4to. (8), 474, (8) pp. Title page printed in red and black. Contemp. vellum with ms. title to spine. Edges sprinkled in red. Second edition of Savary's Arabic Psalter; more precisely, a re-issue of the 1614 original edition, with only the title changed and the remaining pages re-used from the first. Prepared by two Maronite scholars, Nasrallah Salaq al-'Aquri, better known as Victorius Scialac Accurensis, and Gabriel Sionita. "Scialac was one of the first Oriental Christian scholars who by his publications furthered the causes of both European Orientalism and Oriental Christianity. He taught Arabic and Syriac in the Roman University from 1610 to 1631" (Smitskamp, p. 161). The publication is famous for the clarity and elegance of its typeface created by Savary de Brèves: the extensive vocalisation helped this handy quarto volume achieve immense popularity among oriental scholars throughout Europe. Formerly it was assumed that the type design was based on specimens Savary had seen during his time as French envoy at Constantinople; today his probable model is believed to be a calligraphical manuscript from Qannubin, preserved in the Bibliotheca Vaticana. The cutting and founding of the types were done in Rome, in collaboration with Stefano Paolini, an experienced printer formerly of the Typographia Medicea. The Psalms' text is based on a manuscript Savary de Brèves had bought in Jerusalem (cf. Balagna, L'imprimerie arabe en occident, p. 55f.); as it occasionally departs from the Vulgate (as does the translation by the Maronites Sionita and Scialac), an extensive imprimat … [Click Below for Full Description]

RHODES, Alexandre de.
Cordier, Indosinica, col. 1619; J.F. Bell R-208; Walravens, China Illustrata 158. First edition of one of the earliest detailed descriptions of Annam (Vietnam), and particularly the Jesuit missionary activity there in the years 1627-1645. The text is divided into two parts, the first giving a detailed account of the topography, people and customs of the region, and the second a report on the missionary activities. It includes Rhodes' first account of the six tones of the Vietnamese language, introducing five diacritical marks above or below the vowels to represent them with the roman alphabet, leading to the permanent abandonment of Chinese characters (he published a dictionary a year later). He also gives amusing examples of confusion resulting when a missionary used the incorrect tone for a word. No earlier map of the region is known. It covers northern and parts of southern Vietnam (to 12° N), the island of Hainan, and parts of Cambodia, Laos and Canton province, at a scale of about 1:7,000,000, with the title in a wreath ("Regnu(m) Annam"), a compass rose and reticulated scales of latitude and (unnumbered) longitude. Some spotting and browning, marginal stains in the foot and gutter margins (slightly affecting the text), the binding with a few stains, otherwise in good condition. Interesting work on what is now Vietnam by a remarkable missionary. [Attributes: First Edition]

LOTTINI, Gio. Angelo (1549-1629). -
Firenze, Cecconcelli, 1619. In - 4 picc. First edition of this history of all the miracles attributed to a 13th century fresco in a Florentine church representing the Annunciation; it was believed that the head of the Virgin was painted by an angel. The book is particularly valuable for the finely engr. illustrations by Callot: title within an architectural frame with putti, and 40 plates. Lacking the half title as often, otherwise a good copy with neat proofs of the illustrations, bound in 19th century half vellum.

Scaccia, Sigismund
Rome: Jacob Mascardi, 1619. First Edition.. Contemporary limp vellum.. Good with browning and spotting throughout; hip notes of 6 pages are partially trimmed; paper flaw at the corner of p. 283 just touching the numeral.. Small folio. [8], 755, [1], [123] pp. One of the earliest Italian treatises codifying the radical economic changes taking place in what has now been seen as the formative period of modern banking and economic theory. The overthrow of scholastic ideas in relation to money, credit and value are due to classic (Cossa) books like Scaccia's offered here. Scaccia provides a clear picture of the commerical world of the period; the text also provides an explanation as to prevailing concepts of value and price. Scaccia's book supported the new liberal ideas of the period and provided justification for innovative credit and commercial operations of economic utility. Old Palgrave III, p. 360; see Cossa; absent from Einaudi; Kress, Italian, only later ed.

Danby had built up a following based on his own skill in finance, the Church of England maintained by the King and the Bishops, a vigorous policy against dissenters and a fear, shared by the majority of the nation, of French influence. Unfortunately, in 1678, Danby tried to wreck Charles' secret arrangements with Louis XIV by making the sums asked by Charles exorbitant. Although Charles approved the letters, they were found and used against Danby by his rivals. The Commons resolved to impeach Danby and by March 1679 he was in an intolerable position. On the 13th March the King asked him to resign, offering a 'golden handshake' of £5000 a year pension and a marquessate. To prevent possibly unwelcome disclosures at a trial, Charles urged Danby into hiding. The present note strongly suggests that Bishop Mews was acting as go-between. Perhaps he asked Charles to k … [Click Below for Full Description]
