Erste Ausgabe, komplett selten. KEPLER, Johannes
1619. Two folding woodcut plates, three folding printed tables (plus two in duplicate), & several woodcuts in the text. 4 p.l., 138 pp., one blank leaf. 4to, antique 18th-century style calf-backed boards. Augsburg: Typis A. Apergeri, sumptibus S. Mylii, 1619-[20]. First edition, and a very good copy of a rare book; it contains the second observation of Halley's comet. In this work, Kepler "discussed in detail the bright comets of 1607 and 1618. Reflecting on the ephemeral nature of comets, he proposed a strictly rectilinear trajectory, which of course appeared more complex because of the earth's motion. Some decades later Edmond Halley made extensive use of the observations recorded in this book when he showed the seventy-six year periodicity of the comet of 1607. The brief second section of Kepler's trilogy concerned the 'physiology of comets': they fill the ether as fish fill the sea but are dissipated by the sun's light, forming the tail that points away from the sun. The final section treated the significations of the comets."-D.S.B., VII, p. 302. Nice large copy with some uncut leaves and without the usual heavy browning. Stamp of the "K[öniglich] K[aiserliche] Universitätsbibliothek," Vienna, to several leaves, including versos of most tables and with the Library's duplicate or release stamp superimposed. One diagram with an old repair. ? Caspar 60. Cinti 65. Zinner 4739. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

First edition of this rare book which is considered by A.D.B. to be the author's most important scientific work; it is a careful record of the third of the three bright comets of 1618-19. Schmidt (1570-1637), was "one of the last of the scholars of Germany who taught the language and literature of Greece in the spirit of Melanchthon. [Schmidt] was professor, first of Greek, and next of Mathematics, at Wittenberg. His principal work was an edition of Pindar, with a Latin translation and a careful commentary (1616)."-Sandys, II, p. 272. Fine copy. ❧ A.D.B., Vol. 32, pp. 27-28. Zinner 4785.

SCALA BARTOLOMEO.
Siena, apud h'redes Luc' Bonetti, 1619. In-4ø; 8 cc., 219 pp. con ritratto del Santo inciso in rame al titolo inquadrato in un bel fregio tipografico; legatura coeva in tutta pergamena floscia, al dorso titolo manoscritto (curiosamente all'origine scritto al contrario), tagli rossi. Ottimo esemplare. [Click Below for Full Description]

» C … [Click Below for Full Description]

NAPIER, John.
Andrew Hart; Giacomo Cadorino 1619; [1667], Edinburgh; Padua. First edition, extremely rare, of this complement to Napier?s epoch-making Mirifici logorithmorum canonis descriptio (1614) ? while the Descriptio gave the first ever table of logarithms, it was in the Constructio that Napier explained the method of their construction. It is here bound with the first edition of James Gregory?s first mathematical work, highly important in the pre-history of calculus, and if anything even rarer than the Napier. ?Probably no work has ever influenced science as a whole, and mathematics in particular, so profoundly as this modest little book [the Descriptio]. It opened the way for the abolition, once and for all, of the infinitely laborious, nay, nightmarish, processes of long division and multiplication, of finding the power and the root of numbers? (Waters, The Art of Navigation in England in Elizabethan and Early Stuart Times (1958), p. 402). ?The ?Mirifici logorithmorum canonis constructio? is the most important of all of Napier?s works, presenting as it does in a most clear and simple way the original conception of logarithms. It is, however, so rare as to be very little known, many writers on the subject never having seen a copy? (Macdonald, p. xvii). ?Historically, it is important to note that in the Constructio the decimal notation is used with ease and power practically for the first time? (Henderson, p. 253). The second work in this volume is by the brilliant Scottish mathematician James Gregory. ?Of British mathematicians of the seventeenth century, Gregory was excelled onl … [Click Below for Full Description]

Oblong quarto. Contemporary Dutch vellum. Old stains and soiling to boards, manuscript "33" in ink on spine, edges rubbed, boards slightly bowed. Modern bookplate on front pastedown. Minor toning and foxing, tiny reinforcement at mounting stub on verso of each large folding map, some offsetting. Overall very good. In a blue cloth box, gilt leather label. Scarce first Latin edition of one of the bestsellers of illustrated 17th-century travel literature, which reports Le Maire's critical DISCOVERY OF TIERRA DEL FUEGO, an alternate route to the Pacific, and also recounts the Pacific pillaging of the veteran East Indies sailor- turned-pirate, Joris van Spilbergen. In addition, the work includes valuable early information on ports along the Pacific coast of the Americas, and is also of interest for the 17th-century Dutch presence in Brazil. Rich in ethnographic detail, the numerous illustrations in the SPECULUM ORIENTALIS... include images of oversized penguins, llamas, and an Andean condor with a nine-foot wing span. Naval battles, beleaguered Spanish settlements, and newly discovered islands are also depicted in detail, making this a valuable compendium of adventure on the high seas during the Age of Discovery. EMMIUS, Ubbo
1619 Ubbo Emmius Chronologicum Astronomy Auxiliary Sciences Calendars Elzevier Ubbo Emmius was a 16th-century German historian known for his works on historiography.
