Jodocus HONDIUS (1563 - 1612)
Molto rara. Bibliografia: Schilder, Monumenta Cartographica Neerlandica, vol. VI, pp. 150/55, 23.5. In 1619 Jodocus Hondius jr. engraved the first version of the map of Asia with figures. After four years he decided to realize the maps of the coninents, commissionino the job to Pieter van den Keere; this representation of Asia belongs to this set, dated 1623. The map is engraved mirroring the first version, for city plans are figures are upside down compared to the other example. On the upper part there are the city plans of Famagosta, Rodi, Damasco, Jerusalem, Aden and Ormus; on the sides, there are folk costumes of th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Philipp CLUVER (Danzica 1580 - Leyden 1622)
Item Sardinia et Corsica" edito a Leida, Elzevier, 1619. Incisione in rame in perette condizioni. L. Dufour - A. La Gumina, "Imago Siciliae", p. 106

SPILBERGEN, Joris van & Jacob LE MAIRE.
Leyden, Nicolaes van Geelkercken, 1619.Oblong 8vo. Modern vellum. With fine engraving on title-page and 25 engraved maps and plates. 192 pp.First edition. - Joris van Spilbergen (Antwerp 1568 - Bergen op Zoom 1620) was appointed in 1614 to head an expedition to the East Indies for the East India Company (VOC) by way of the Strait of Magellan to reassert Dutch claims to access into the Pacific from the east. The first attack on the Spanish was made on Santa Maria in Chili. He went on north to Valparaiso, Acapulco, further along the Mexican coast. In 1616 he reached Guam and Manila and thence to Ternate and Java. Joris van Spilbergen was the second Dutchman to circumnavigate the world. He discovered land along what is now the coast of California. 'Spilbergen had succeeded in establishing the power and reputation of the Dutch East India Company. In Java he took on board the crew of Le Maire and Schouten whose vessels had been confiscated. Le Maire and Schouten had discovered several small islands, Staten Landt, and the Straits of Le Maire, and had been the first to round Cape Horn' (Hill 1619). 'Spilbergen's voyage was the most succesful Dutch circumnavigation to date. The fleet had kept together, there had been little loss of Dutch life, and the expedition had metted a considerable profit for its sponsors' (Howgego S159). A short survey of another of the most important early voyages around the world, by Schouten and Le Maire in the years 1615 to 1617, is added at the end (Australische navigatien). It reports Le Maire's proof that Tierra del Fuego is an island and his discover … [Click Below for Full Description]

First published in 1581 (Magdeberg), unlike the German edition this English translation, sometimes attributed to English poet Richard Braithwait (1588-1673), was not accompanied by maps or engravings. It was nevertheless a popular work, treating the Bible as a form of guide to the Holy Land by following the travels of Old and New Testament figures, and reprinted six times before the turn of the century. Scoresby, William.
New York: The Explorers Club, 1916-1917, 1619. 8 volumes, various paginations (complete). b/w and color plates, maps and facsimiles. "Issued in fac-simile with reproductions in color of portraits in oils of Captain William Scoresby, Senior and of Captain William Scoresby, Junior. Introduction and notes by Frederick S. Dellenbaugh." This set is #130 in a limited edition of 300 copies. All but three copies were placed in institutions, accounting for the scarcity of this set on the market. According to an old Eberstadt catalog, "Three hundred copies printed and plates destroyed; all copies permanently deposited in institutions, except for three presented to individuals: Dellenbaugh, Bartlett, and Stefansson. Although perhaps the most important work on whaling and early far-northern exploration ever to achieve print, apparently the desire of the patron, the late James B. Ford, that no copy should ever come on the market, has until now been fulfilled. The only record of the work is an appraisal made in 1937 by a qualified person, placing its value 'at a minimum of one thousand dollars. The log-books, describing fourteen voyages into the Arctic seas from 1786 onward, are invaluable records of early northern navigation, whale fishing, and original exploration. Scoresby was the most successful whaler and ice navigator that ever lived; a foremost proponent of the Northwest Passage; inventor of the top-gallant "crow's nest," the ice drill, and much whaling equipment..." EB-CHEM-. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Click Below for Full Description]

OLIVIER, Jacques
Paris: Petit-Pas, 1619. Third Edition. Hardcover. Margins trimmed close occasionally affecting a running head or page number but not the text; small stain on two facing pages. Slight cracking to joints. Near Fine and scarce. Duodecimo (3-1/8" x 5-1/4") bound in full 18th century calf with the insignia of Montgomery stamped in blind to the front board, recent gilt-lettered black morocco spine label; 360, 70, (23, [1]) pages. Contains the first issue of the "Portraict racourcy d'une femme mondaine pour le friant dessert des courtizans et partizans," with separate pagination. First appearing in 1617, this wildly misogynistic work caused quite a reaction in its day. The woodcut figure on the title-page is believed to represent Marguerite de Valois, to whom the work is dedicated ("la plus mauvaise du monde"), shown full-length with snakes for hair, suckling a cat on each breast, holding a headless chicken, and with talons for feet. "Jacques Olivier" was the pseudonym of the Cordelier Alexis Trousset. Brunet (IV-182) notes that all of the early editions are equally valued. OCLC locates 5 copies, 2 in the United States.
