GODEFROY (Th?odore);
Paris: Petit-Pas, 1619. Third Edition. Hardcover. Margins trimmed close occasionally affecting a running head or page number but not the text; small stain on two facing pages. Slight cracking to joints. Near Fine and scarce. Duodecimo (3-1/8" x 5-1/4") bound in full 18th century calf with the insignia of Montgomery stamped in blind to the front board, recent gilt-lettered black morocco spine label; 360, 70, (23, [1]) pages. Contains the first issue of the "Portraict racourcy d'une femme mondaine pour le friant dessert des courtizans et partizans," with separate pagination. First appearing in 1617, this wildly misogynistic work caused quite a reaction in its day. The woodcut figure on the title-page is believed to represent Marguerite de Valois, to whom the work is dedicated ("la plus mauvaise du monde"), shown full-length with snakes for hair, suckling a cat on each breast, holding a headless chicken, and with talons for feet. "Jacques Olivier" was the pseudonym of the Cordelier Alexis Trousset. Brunet (IV-182) notes that all of the early editions are equally valued. OCLC locates 5 copies, 2 in the United States.

Machiavelli, Niccolò] Machiauellj (Machiauelli), Nicolaj; [Hans Conrad Wieland von Basel]
Bey Jacob Foillet / In verlegung Ludwig Königs, Gedruckt zu Mümpelgardt [Montbéliard; Mömpelgard], 1619. First German edition. In 18th century leather. Spine with five raised bands, gilt compartments, and gilt lettered title vignette. Marbled endpapers. Red-tinted edges. Title printed in red and black. 4º: (:)4, (*)4, (.)2, A-Z4, Aa-Zz4, Aaa-Ccc4. (20), 419, (1) [263-292 omitted; complete]. The excessively rare first edition of the German translation of Arte della guerra, the first influential modern treatise on military art. Machiavelli's first book ever translated into German. Only one other copy known, in Montbéliard. Kriegskunst is the first work of Machiavelli translated into German, and it remained the only book by him in this language until the 18th century. It was translated from French by the Basler Hans Conrad Wieland (1563-1629), and printed by Jacob Foillet (1554-1619), the prominent printer of Montbéliard (or Mömpelgard, then part of Württemberg) who had strong connections to the members of the Machiavellian movement of Basel. Although Foillet was commissioned by Ludwig König, the influential publisher and Machiavellist from Basel, it is supposed that the actual man behind this publication was Johann Nikolaus Stupanus (1542-1621), the Italian-Swiss physician, who also lived in Basel at the time. (Kaegi; pp. 49-50.) Stupanus was the author of the infamous foreword of the second Latin edition of The Prince (Princeps. Basel: Perna, 1580), wherein he committed the provocation to dedicate the book to the Bishop of Basel, a powerful force in the Counterreformation. H … [Click Below for Full Description]

OLIVIER, Jacques

Amsterdam, 1619. Mapa que pertence al Atlas Mercator-Hondius. Edición francesa. Iluminado de época. 54 x 45,5 cm. Oscurecimiento del papel en la parte central por haber estado guardado con doblez largo tiempo. Pequeña rotura con falta de papel en el vértice inferior derecho. Nice old colored example of Hondius' map of Catalonia, from an early edition of the Mercator-Hondius Atlas. The map reflects a fine dark impression, from an early edition of the atlas. The map is highly detailed, identifying cities, rivers, mountains, castles, ports and other features. Two sea monsters are shown in the upper right corner, along with a sailing ship, compass rose and decorative cartouche. Jodocus Hondius the Elder (1563-1612), or Joost de Hondt, was one of the most prominent geographers and engravers of his time. London: This printer controversial edition has a General Title dated 1619, NT title and colophon dated 1620. Both titles omit the words Appointed. The original binding remains tight with Holy Bible Black Letter and 1619 found in gold prominently displayed on the spine. The leaves are sharp and collates 100% complete and perfect and in museum condition with only some very minor foxing. 100% complete with all 5 titles and NO leaves in facsimile. This edition provides the complete Genealogies and Map as well as Concordances and 1621 Whole Book of Psalms. The printer controversy bears the name of Norton and Bill on the General Title, The NT title has Barker and Bill and the colophon Barker only. This is significant as these printers were embarked on numerous legal battles over the right to print the King James Bible. A museum quality fine copy remaining on Black Letter.
