NAPIER, John.
Second (first obtainable) edition of his 'Contructio' (Horblit 77b, 1619), with the first Continental edition of the 'Descriptio' (Horblit 77a, 1614) - "The work which in the history of British science can be placed as second only to Newton's Principia" (Evans 4).

"His 'Description of the Wonderful Table of Logarithms' is unique in the history of science in that a great discovery was the result of the unaided original speculation of one individual without precursors and almost without contemporaries in his field." (PMM 116).

"Logarithms provided a most important advance in the art of calculation because they reduced multiplication and division to a process of addition and subtraction, and extraction of roots to division." (Dibner 106).

"Napier's invention of logarithms was immediately adopted by mathematicians both in England and on the continent, including Briggs and Ursinus, who introduced logarithms to Kepler." (Norman). Kepler "expressed his enthusiasm in a letter to Napier dated 28 July 1619, printed in the dedication of his 'Ephemerides', 1620." (DSB).

The 'Descriptio' "contains fifty-seven pages of text explaining the uses of logarithms in both plane and spherical trigonometry and ninety pages of tables. The method of producing the table was not described, but Napier indicated that should this work be suitably received, he would publish another (the Constructio) on how they were calculated. ... GRASSI, Orazio]
Perugia: Marci Naccarini, 1619. FIRST EDITION. Engraved title vignette of one of the 1618 comets in the constellation of Libra, with large historiated initials and text diagrams. Antique calf in a contemporary style with gilt borders and gilt- ornamented spine; overall in superb condition. First edition of Grassi's extraordinarily important and bitter attack on Galileo's theory of the nature of comets, later inspiring Il Saggiatore. The scientists' famous dispute started the prior year with Grassi's De tribus cometis, which Galileo (using the alias of his assistant Guiducci) followed up with his provocative Discorso della comete (1619). Grassi responded (under the pseudonym Lothario Sarsi) with this publication of Libra astronomica, in which he strongly defends the ideas of Tycho Brahe and the Jesuits. Galileo went on to publish his polemic and rhetorical masterpiece, Il Saggiatore, as a direct reply to this work. Grassi (1583-1654) was a Jesuit mathematician who taught at the Collegio Romano. This controversy ruined his relationship with Galileo, and earned his adversary the ire of the entire Collegio Romano - a major factor in his later difficulties with the Inquisition.

SCHEINER, Christoph
Finely engraved allegorical frontis. & numerous woodcut diagrams in the text. 7 p.l. (incl. frontis.), 254 pp. 4to, cont. limp vellum over boards (first & last few leaves with faint dampstaining), ties gone. Innsbruck: D. Agricola, 1619. First edition, and a fine copy, of one of the most famous and important works in the history of optics. In this book, Scheiner demonstrated for the first time that the retina is the actual organ of sight and explained the pupil changes known as "accommodation." He also devised the pin-hole test ("Scheiner's test") to illustrate accommodation and refraction. "The intricate frontispiece depicts a 'camera obscura' and a system of inverting lenses, as well as the newly-invented telescope. The peacock in the foreground carries a double meaning, representing not only the science of optics, but the overly prideful Galileo."-Linda Hall Library, Jesuit Science in the Age of Galileo, 9. A fresh copy. Early signature on title of "P.D. Huet." This is most certainly the famous French scholar and scientist Pierre Daniel Huet (1630-1721), who, being short-sighted, devoted his anatomical studies to the question of vision and the formation of the eye. He made more than 800 dissections (see Encycl. Brit.). ❧ D.S.B., XII, pp. 151-52. Garrison-Morton 1480. .

Greco, Giaccino (1600-1634)
343 pages. Duodecimo (5 ½? x 3 ¼?). Bound in vellum with black lettering to spine. Originally written in 1619 in Italian. [Biblioteca van Der Niemeijeriana: 402]Gioachino Greco, also known as Il Calabrese, was born around 1600 in Celico, which near Cosenza in Calabria. Calabria had already produced such players as Leonardo di Bono and Michele di Mauro. From his writing it's apparent the he wasn't educated and likely came from a lower class family. Already in 1619, Greco started keeping a notebook of tactics and particularly clever games and he took up the custom of giving copies of his manuscripts to his wealthy patrons. In Rome Monsignor Corsino della casa Minutoli Tegrini, Cardinal Savelli and Monsignor Francisco Buoncompagni all received copies (of which there are extant copies, dated 1620 in the Corsiniana library in Rome, under the title, Trattato del nobilissimo gioco de scacchi). Despite his popularity in Rome, in 1621 Greco took off to test himself against the rest of Europe leaving this paper trail as he went. In 1621 he left a fine copy of his manuscripts with Duke Enrico of Lorraine in Nancy. He traveled to Paris where he played Arnauld (Isaac) de Corbeville, Enrico di Savoia (the Marquis of St. Sorlin and the Duke of Nemours and Geneva) and others. He had apparently been quite successful because in traveling from Paris to England he was waylaid by robbers who divested him of 5,000 scudi, a princely sum. Finally making it to London, he beat all the best players. Sir Francis Godolphin and Nicholas Mountstephen were given copies of his manuscripts. While in London, … [Click Below for Full Description]

BEAUVAU, Henri de
Nancy: Iacob Garnich, 1619. An attractive copy of Beauvau’s 1605 expedition through Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Palestine and Egypt, one of the most substantially illustrated French travelogues of the first half of the 17th century relating to the Near East. Of special note is Beauvau’s use of cartographic illustration suggestive of the Italian isolarios of the period: the 49 maps and views of Aegean islands, etc., engraved in the manner of Bertelli and Camocio, remind us that at this early date France did not as yet have a very well developed cartographic style, forcing publishers to look for models elsewhere—namely Italy, where the Italians had been publishing isolarios for more than a century. The plates, however, were engraved by a Frenchman, Jean Appier Hanzelet, of Lorraine, a very good engraver who is best known for his book on pyrotechnics with memorable illustrations in a kindred style.Beauvau describes many religious landmarks and holy sites (this edition includes floor plans of the more important churches in Jerusalem) as well as providing details on peoples of various faiths he encountered during his travels. Mentioned in the Relation are a number of legendary boulders and stones in Palestine which bear curious markings, allegedly the imprints of the bodies of three apostles on stones in the Garden of Gethsemane and of St. Jerome’s body in the desert (p. 148).Henri de Beauvau, a soldier and diplomat, fought the Turks in Hungary first in the service of Emperor Rudolph III, and then under the elector of Bavaria. Imp. Pedro Patricio Mey a costa de Filipo Pincinali. Valencia, 1619 - . 15,5 cm. Palau 298186. ALLESTREE, Richard
At the Theater in Oxford, With engraved allegorical frontispiece, woodcut head-pieces and initials. Full green morocco, label and gilt lettering on spine, extremities rubbed. With ownership inscription of Mary Ollyffe on frontispiece. The rare first edition of Allestree's guide to ethical speech, a lesson in morality with a severe regard to the faults and follies of others, and therefore, an improvement upon our own disposition. "Hold your tongue when nothing good can come from the words of criticism and condemnation of them." It is full of moral advice and instruction about correct judgement. Among the many subjects he treats are: the manifold abuse of speech, lying, uncharitable truth, of flattery and boasting and obscene talk. He closes with ten specific "lessons" on how to proceed through one's life while being able to commit to the positive utilization of the general rules of morality as well as their specific (and numerous) exceptions.& Allestree (1619-1681), a noted tutor, was later professor of Divinity at Oxford and provost of Eton College. As an ardent royalist, he took up arms for the king, and performed all duties of a common soldier. He was frequently seen holding a musket in one hand and a book in the other. He is noted "as a man of extensive learning, of moderate views, generous and charitable, of a solid and masculine kindness, and of a temper hot, but completely under control" (Encyclopedia Britannica, I, p. 694).&

Scaccia, Sigismund
Rome: Jacob Mascardi, 1619. First Edition.. Contemporary limp vellum.. Good with browning and spotting throughout; hip notes of 6 pages are partially trimmed; paper flaw at the corner of p. 283 just touching the numeral.. Small folio. [8], 755, [1], [123] pp. One of the earliest Italian treatises codifying the radical economic changes taking place in what has now been seen as the formative period of modern banking and economic theory. The overthrow of scholastic ideas in relation to money, credit and value are due to classic (Cossa) books like Scaccia's offered here. Scaccia provides a clear picture of the commerical world of the period; the text also provides an explanation as to prevailing concepts of value and price. Scaccia's book supported the new liberal ideas of the period and provided justification for innovative credit and commercial operations of economic utility. Old Palgrave III, p. 360; see Cossa; absent from Einaudi; Kress, Italian, only later ed.

La Guardia, Fiorello [1882 - 1947]
, 1916 - 1941. 1916 - 1941.. SIGNED (5 pcs).. Overall VG - VG+.. LaGuardia, or "Little Flower," is widely regarded as one of the best mayors in New York City history, whose tenure redefined the office. He was the 99th mayor of the "Big Apple", serving his populace from 1934 - 1945. For those twelve years, the 5 foot 2, sometimes belligerent, chief executive dominated life in New York City as if he was 7 foot 2. Unlike many politicians today, he fulfilled many of his pledges, especially the ferreting out of corruption in the city's government. Such earned him a reputation for placing the city's interests ahead of political considerations, and in the same vein, although technically a Republican, he worked closely with the New Deal administration of President Franklin Roosevelt to secure funding for large public works projects. These federal subsidies enabled New York City to create a transportation network the envy of the world, and to build parks, low-income housing, bridges, schools, & hospitals. Furthermore, he achieved the unification of the city's rapid transit system, a goal that had long eluded his predecessors, and he reformed the structure of city government by pushing for a new City Charter. He presided over construction of New York City's first municipal airport on Flushing Bay, later to become his namesake. As a result of all his efforts, LaGuardia's psychological effect on New York City was nothing short of profound, restoring faith in city government by demanding excellence from civil servants. Many politicans today could learn from his example, and we, … [Click Below for Full Description]
