Paris, 1619. 12mo. Early 20th-century crushed red morocco by Riviere & Son, with a double-rule border on front and rear boards, spine gilt with raised bands, gilt inner dentelles, a.e.g. Minute tears in edges of titlepages and dedication leaves. Very small, unobtrusive wormhole in upper outer margin of final thirty-four leaves (not affecting text). Folding plates trimmed close along outer edge (one with a short closed split along the fold). A very good copy. First edition of Samuel de Champlain's third work, with the first reports of his explorations of 1615 to 1618. Written primarily to encourage the continued patronage of New France by Louis XIII, this volume gives much information on Native Americans of the St. Lawrence Valley and their customs, and the topography of upstate New York. "It describes his introduction to the Recollet Fathers as missionaries to the Indians, his exploration of the Ottawa River, Lake Huron, and Lake Ontario; the attack on the Iroquois fort in New York state; and his winter among the Hurons. The work also contains Champlain's incomparable essay on the Hurons and other neighboring tribes. It includes Brule's narrative of his experiences among the savages on the southern borders of New York, near the Pennsylvania line, and an account of the events which occurred in the settlements at Quebec" - Winsor. The engravings show Champlain's attack on an Iroquois fort, male and female Indian costumes, a deer hunt, an Indian dance, and a burial. "The plates, illustrative of scenes in Indian life, are beautiful specimens of the engraving of the period" - Field. This is one of the most difficult of Champlain's works to find. We note only three copies appearing at auction in the past thirty years. The Siebert copy sold for $51,750 in 1999 (to this firm), and then brought $74,400 when it reappeared at auction in 2009.

Amsterdam: J. Noschen, 1664.

Gebonden in 18de-eeuwse halfleren band, (8)+398+(24) p., ill.

Huc accessit Christophori Rhotmanni Ill. Princ. Wilhelmi Hassiae Lantgravii mathematici descriptio accurata cometa anni 1585. Nunc primum à Will. Sn. R.F. in lucem edita.

Leiden, Elzevir, 1619 - 4to (203 x 155 mm), pp [viii] 156, with woodcut printer's device on title and several woodcut diagrams in text; a fine, unpressed copy in contemporary Dutch vellum, remains of green silk ties. £9500First edition of Snel's account of the 1618 comets, accompanied by the first publication of Christoph Rothmann's account of the 1585 comet. 'His descriptions of the comets of 1585 and 16118, published in 1619, show Snel to be a follower of the Ptolemaic system. Although he demonstrated from the parallax that the comet was beyond the moon and therefore could not consist of terrestrial vapors, he still believed in the character of comets as omnia' (DSB).'Rothmann's importance derives mainly from his correspondence with Tycho Brahe. Tycho had visited William IV in Kassel in 1575; but they did not communicate again until the comet of 1585, which let to an exchange of letters between Tycho in Hven and William IV and Rothmann in Kassel that lasted for six years. A last letter was written by Rothmann from Bernburg in 1594. This correspondence covered all aspects of contemporary astronomy: instruments and methods of observing, the Copernican system (which Rothmann supported against Tycho's system), comets, and auroras' (DSB).Christoph Rothmann (ca 1560 - ca 1600) 'constructed the first modern star catalog based entirely on his own observations. He was one of the most outstanding astronomers of the 16th century, but we have scant information on Rothmann's life .'In November 1584 he started to work with Landgrave Wilhelm IV of Hessen-Kassel as an astronomer at the local observatory . Rothmann stayed in Kassel until mid 1590. In the summer of that year he went on a journey to Brahe, studied his instruments, and left Brahe's island on September 1 .'After observing the comet of 1585, Rothmann was one of the first astronomers to conclude that comets are cosmic objects. Rothmann had observed the comet from 8 October to 8 November, did not find a parallax, and determined the distance between the comet and the Earth to be 500,000 German miles; therefore it must have been far beyond the sphere of the Moon' (Jürgen Hamel and Eckehard Rothenberg, in Biographical Encyclopedia of Astronomers I p 987).Bierens de Haan 4393; Willems 165

- Vgl.         Speculum Orientalis Occidentalisque Indiae navigationum; quarum una Georgii a Spilbergen classis cum potestate Præfecti, altera Iacobi le Maire auspiciis imperioque directa, Annis 1614, 15, 16, 17, 18. Exhibens Novi in mare Australe transitus

Leiden: Nicolaus a Geelkercken, 1619. Oblong quarto, engraving on title-page and 25 engraved plates, including a folding world map, a folding map of South East Asia, a map of the Pacific and South America, and views of islands and ports (five double-page); a few scattered early ink notations, expert paper repairs to the margin corner of the title page (engraving unaffected) and further minor marginal repairs to three leaves, a few pages browned; overall a very good copy in contemporary limp vellum with manuscript lettering. One of the classic illustrated travel books of the early seventeenth century. The East and West Indian Mirror narrates two highly important expeditions to the Spice Islands via South America and the Pacific. The first was the voyage by Admiral Spilbergen, essentially military in nature, in which he came into conflict with the Spanish and Portuguese fleets in several parts of the Pacific. The second was the momentous Pacific crossing by Le Maire and Schouten, the 'last expedition of the seventeenth century to search for Terra Australis from the east' (Schilder). The Australische Compagnie was formed to develop a new passage to the Pacific south of the Strait of Magellan, in order to circumvent the VOC's exclusive rights, and to develop trade in whatever land they discovered in the South Pacific. Le Maire and Schouten were sent out by the company, and sailed south to the Le Maire Strait, which separates Tierra del Fuego from Staten Island, and into the Pacific past Cape Horn, naming the cape for the expedition's home-base, Hoorn. Although they failed to locate a southern continent, they made an impressive series of discoveries in the Pacific, notably in the Tuamotu Archipelago; and although its ends were strictly commercial, theirs was 'the one genuine voyage of Oceanic exploration between Quiros and Tasman' (Spate II, p. 23).On their arrival in the Dutch East Indies, they were immediately seized by the VOC. After being tried for infringing the VOC monopoly, they were sent home aboard Spilbergen's ship. Le Maire died at sea on the way home. Only after several years did his father finally receive his son's journal, which was ultimately published in Herrera's book of 1622. By this time, Spilbergen had made use of the journal himself, publishing his version of the expedition in this book.'Jacob Le Maire's voyage was an important prelude to Tasman's voyage of 1642/3 who sailed, on the last lap of his voyage, partly through seas first crossed by Le Maire. Le Maire's expedition opened up an entirely new route across the southern Pacific, quite different from those that Magellan, Drake and others had explored. From the journals, it is clear how much de Quiros had influenced Le Maire who confidently believed in the existence of a southern continent. If Le Maire's train of thought had not been disturbed by the sober considerations of Schouten, who was more of a practical-minded sailor than he was an explorer, and if the westerly course had been kept, the Dutch would have had the chance of discovering the important east coast of Australia 150 years before James Cook...' (Schilder). This is the best edition, being the first Latin edition identical in format and illustration to the publisher's Dutch language version issued in the same year. The splendid series of engraved plates includes the very important map of Le Maire's and Schouten's route across the Pacific as well as maps of the Strait of Magellan and Manila, the Moluccas, battle-scenes, and various ports on the Pacific coast of Spanish America as far north as Acapulco.

        The government of the tongue.

With engraved allegorical frontispiece, woodcut head - pieces and initials. Full green morocco, label and gilt lettering on spine, extremities rubbed. With ownership inscription of Mary Ollyffe on frontispiece. The rare first edition of Allestree's guide to ethical speech, a lesson in morality with a severe regard to the faults and follies of others, and therefore, an improvement upon our own disposition. "Hold your tongue when nothing good can come from the words of criticism and condemnation of them." It is full of moral advice and instruction about correct judgement. Among the many subjects he treats are: the manifold abuse of speech, lying, uncharitable truth, of flattery and boasting and obscene talk. He closes with ten specific "lessons" on how to proceed through one's life while being able to commit to the positive utilization of the general rules of morality as well as their specific (and numerous) exceptions. Allestree (1619 - 1681), a noted tutor, was later professor of Divinity at Oxford and provost of Eton College. As an ardent royalist, he took up arms for the king, and performed all duties of a common soldier. He was frequently seen holding a musket in one hand and a book in the other. He is noted "as a man of extensive learning, of moderate views, generous and charitable, of a solid and masculine kindness, and of a temper hot, but completely under control" (Encyclopedia Britannica, I, p. 694).

Young, Bibliogr. of Memory, pp.265 - 266. Yates, Art of Memory, pp.300 - 301. Rossi, Logic and the Art of Memory, p.92: «Between 1617 and 1619 (at the same time as the young Descartes began to express his interest in Lullism and the arts of memory) the works by Johannes Paepp were published in Lyons. One of these works, the Schenkelius detectus seu memoria artificialis hactenus occultata was a detailed commentary on Schenckel?s Ars memoriae, a work which Descartes knew well. In the Artificiosae memoriae fundamenta and the Introductio facilis in praxim artificiosae memoriae, Paepp set out to expound the Aristotelian, Ciceronian and Thomist doctrines on memory, but he had also patently been influenced by the Lullist tradition, and was familiar with its most significant exponents, from Bruno to Alsted. Following in the footsteps of Alsted, he fiercely criticized the denigrators of the art, and defended the idea of the interdependence of logic and mnemotechnics: while logic was necessary for some of the arts and disciplines, he argued, memory was indispensable for all forms of knowledge... A substantial part of his work is devoted to a discussion of the doctrines of Bruno...» An interesting collection of four rare works on artificial memory, all in first edition (second issue of the first one). Four titles printed in red and black, 3 finely engr. full - page coat of arms, nine full page text illustrations, and numerous tables and diagrams in the text. Small old stamp and owner's name on title, some mild toning of the paper, but generally a good copy in contemp. vellum, neatly recased.

Libra astronomica ac philosophica qua Galilaei Galilaei opiniones de cometis a Mario Guicucio in Florentina Academia expositae, atque in lucem nuper editae, examinantur a Lothario Sarsio Sigensano ONE OF THE GREATEST ARGUMENTS IN SCIENCE:THE CONTROVERSY OF THE COMETS

Engraved title vignette of one of the 1618 comets in the constellation of Libra, with large historiated initials and text diagrams. Antique calf in a contemporary style with gilt borders and gilt- ornamented spine; overall in superb condition. First edition of Grassi?'s extraordinarily important and bitter attack on Galileo?'s theory of the nature of comets, later inspiring Il Saggiatore. The scientists?' famous dispute started the prior year with Grassi?'s De tribus cometis, which Galileo (using the alias of his assistant Guiducci) followed up with his provocative Discorso della comete (1619). Grassi responded (under the pseudonym Lothario Sarsi) with this publication of Libra astronomica, in which he strongly defends the ideas of Tycho Brahe and the Jesuits. Galileo went on to publish his polemic and rhetorical masterpiece, Il Saggiatore, as a direct reply to this work. Grassi (1583-1654) was a Jesuit mathematician who taught at the Collegio Romano. This controversy ruined his relationship with Galileo, and earned his adversary the ire of the entire Collegio Romano — a major factor in his later difficulties with the Inquisition.
