Corona imperiale dell' architettura militare divisa in due trattati.

All' inizio lunga dedica dell' autore a B. Lomellino. *Riccardi II 423; * Autori del 600 1462; *Marini 66; *Manzi 158 n°114; *Cockle 810; *Pollak 52 *Michel Michel Viii 87; *Bm.Stc. italian XVII cent 823.[f61] [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Arnheim: Jan Jansen, 1618.. [38]pp. plus nine folding plates. Small quarto. New vellum. One plate with an older tissue repair on verso. Minor toning. Very good. First German edition, and second overall, of the chronicle of this major voyage, an important step in the rise of the Dutch seaborne empire. Undertaken in 1615 and lasting until 1617, this important expedition was the fourth complete circumnavigation, after Magellan in 1519, Drake in 1577, and Cavendish shortly thereafter. The expedition was the first to go visit Cape Horn, naming Cape after the Dutch town of Hoorn, whose aggressive traders sponsored the voyage. In addition, the expedition explored the Pacific coast of South America, pursued the search for Terra Australis, and proved that Tierra del Fuego was not an island. The plates show maps of the route, as well as a view of Cocos Island, Tierra del Fuego, an Indian sailing canoe, a meeting of the Indian kings, and a plate of Porto Desire which shows several species of animal. Translated from Schouten's JOURNAL OFTE BESCHREYVINGHE... published the same year in Amsterdam, this edition used the same plates to print the map and illustrations.

        Lugdonum (Lyon, France)

Cologne: 1572-1618 - Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590) “Lugdonum” (Lyon, France) From Civitates orbis terrarum Cologne: 1572-1618 Hand-colored copperplate engraving with beautiful original color Paper size: 16 ½” x 20 1/2" Condition: 4 inch repaired tear in bottom left quadrant with repaired one inch area of paper loss at the bottom of repaired tear at bottom left paper edge; center binding crease has been repaired; discoloration along paper edges, overall in good condition. The views from George Braun and Frans Hogenberg’s landmark Civitates orbis terrarum, completed in Cologne between 1572 and 1618, are among the most beautiful and important images of Renaissance cities. The Civitates was the first extensive series of town views that treated its subject matter in an accurate and meaningful way. Earlier collections of town views were far more limited in scope, and often made no real attempt to render the subject city with any degree of realism being simply a record of the existence of a town. Certainly the striking beauty and accuracy of Braun and Hogenberg’s production was entirely unprecedented. Earlier collections contained no more than a handful of views, usually only of the more important cities, while the Civitates contained literally hundreds of views, including many of smaller towns for which no earlier views are known. Even for the larger, important cities, the Civitates is of the utmost importance to the history of their topography.

Uniformly browned due to stock quality, else a very good copy. ~ Goltzius (Venlo 1526 - Bruges 1583) sketched the contents of over a thousand collections of coins, developing his drawings into a series of thematic and biographical studies in ancient history. His work laid the groundwork for the systematic study of numismatics. His publishing career began in 1557, with the publication of Vivae Imagines, and ended in 1579, when he published the first edition of the "Thesaurus rei antiquariae Huberrimus". Much of his work, however, was left unpublished, and it was Jacob de Bie of Antwerp who gathered and published it, including the present edition of the "Thesaurus." Lipsius 152. Brunet II, p. 1653.         Cosmologie du Monde, tant celeste que Terrestre.

      - Paris, Michel Daniel 1618 FIRST EDITION. pp. [viii], 236, [xii]. Roman letter. small woodcut printer's device on t-p repeated in a larger format on recto of last, charming historiated woodcut initials, woodcut and typographical headpieces, fldg. engraved plate of a globe, eighteenth century printed bookseller's label from Rouen on pastedown. Light age yellowing, minor waterstain to lower blank margin in places. A very good, clean copy, in slightly later French speckled calf, large crowned monogram gilt at centers of covers, spine with raised bands richly gilt in compartments, expertly remounted, corners restored, all edges speckled red. Rare first and only edition of this curious astrological work which Saulnier describes in his prefatory epistle, his dedication to Mademoiselle Louise d'Anssienville, as an epitome in imitation of Livy and Valerius Maximus. The work is a description of the globe and heavens so as to better understand divination, in other words a description for the purposes of astrology in the guise of a cosmology. "Nous commencerons par le traictŽ de la Sphere, comme estant la plus necessaire, pour en apres entendre mieux le peu que nous dirons de ce qu'avons promis" The work is divided into three chapters, the first and longest, entitled 'Traicte de L'Astrologie Naturelle' starts with a description of the size of the heavens and then describes the major constellations and the origins of their denomination. He then describes the "Cercles de la shpere" concentrating on the Zodiac and follows with a "Theorie des Planettes" and a description of the nature of the zodiac and planets. The second chapter is a description of the earth (including a list of the principal provinces of the New World) and its four elements fire, water, air and the earth. There is an interesting section on tides and the effects the moon has on the earth and a description of each of the parts of the world and its oceans. He also includes a section on the rising and falling of astrological signs. The last and most curious chapter is a description of 'Time and the Calendar', and the division of time into days months and years. He finishes with a series of predictions for the weather for each year from 1619 to 1643 based on his description of the solar cycle, and gives a table of the calendar from which he makes these predictions. We have been unable to discover the owner of the monogram on both covers. A very good copy of this most interesting and rare work. BM STC Fr. C17 S307. Caillet 9916.         Nova Illustrissimi Principatus Pomeraniae Descripto

Amsterdam: Philipp II, Duke of Pomarania, 1618. Large engraved wall-map in 12 engraved mapsheets, each sheet approx. 420 x 540mm., in original outline colour. THE RAREST AND MOST IMPORTANT EARLY MAP OF POMERANIA is this majestic twelve sheet wall map published in 1618. It was the work of Professor Eilhard Lubben of Rostock University who had been ordered in 1610 to create the map by Phillipp II, Duke of Pomerania, who wanted a large-scale map that would be a comprehensive geopgraphy and history of the duchy. Professor Lubben spent 1611 and 1612 traveling throughout the country measuring hundreds of angles and distances, but had little geographical information to guide him. The only earlier map of Pomerania was a small work by Peter Artopaus (later used by Munster and Ortelius), though Lubben himself had also mapped the island of Rugen on the Pomaranian coast in 1609. After the map had been completed, the copperplates were decorated with noble arms, a genealogical tree, portraits (including a prominent engraving of Philip II), and forty-six town views (many of these towns are shown here for the first time). It was at last completed in 1618 in the Netherlands by Nicolaes Van Geelkercken, but very few copies were actually printed. Some were presented to the Pomeranian court, but the shortage of paper and the thirty years war prevented the printing of additional copies. Hence, no example from that 1618 printing has survived. Geelkerken's copperplates were discovered in the eighteenth century in Straisund (a town featured in a vignette on the map), and in 1757 the map was reissued, but, as Scharfe notes "again only a small number of copies were printed and so this edition is a very rare object today". Lubben's success won him accolades from the great Dutch mapmakers who used his map as a source. It was the model for virtually all atlas maps of Pomerania of the seventeenth century, including those of Blaeu and Janssonius, and Hondius (who probably printed this map) dedicated his famous wall map of Asia to Lubben: see Schilder, Monumenta Cartographica Neerlandica VI,pp. 150-151. Lubben's Pomerania remained the only map of consequence of the region from its inception in 1618 until the Prussian topographical survey of the eighteenth century. It is a landmark of cartography in the great Dutch tradition and known in only a handful of copies. This may be the finest exampe to have survived.

Amsterdam: Guillaume Janson Blaeu, 1618. Small quarto, with nine engraved folding maps and plates, some light staining and a blemish in a few upper margins but a very good copy in period style crushed morocco, spine gilt in compartments between raised bands. The last seventeenth-century expedition to search for Terra Australis from the east. The first edition in French of this rare and important book, preceded only by the original Dutch versions of the same year (Amsterdam and Arnhem issues). Very many editions were to follow. This is the celebrated account of the Le Maire and Schouten expedition westward across the Pacific to the Indies, during which they discovered a new navigable passage south of Cape Horn. The maps, and particularly the well-known folding chart of a largely empty Pacific Ocean, demonstrate the magnitude of the achievement of Schouten and Le Maire in crossing the ocean from east to west, in order to reach the Spice islands without straying into the territories controlled by the monopolistic Dutch East India Company. Schouten and Le Maire named Cape Horn when they rounded it in 1616, visited several of the Tuamotus, and were the first westerners to visit the Tonga islands. They then coasted New Ireland and New Guinea on their way to the Spice Islands and eventually Batavia. The importance of the book to contemporary geographical understanding cannot be overstated; it was 'the last seventeenth-century expedition to search for Terra Australis from the east' (Schilder). The voyage was made under the auspices of the newly formed group of Dutch traders known as the Australian Company, set up to compete with the Dutch East India Company and to search for the elusive Terra Australis. It was of great importance for the future history of discovery in that it proved the existence of a passage from the southern Atlantic into the Pacific, south of the Straits of Magellan round Cape Horn, and therefore finally demonstrated that the supposed Southern Continent, contrary to the maps of Ortelius and Mercator, did not extend to the Straits of Magellan. This edition, produced in Amsterdam by the publisher and cartographer Willem Blaeu, is one of two variant French-language issues of 1618 noted by the bibliographer Tiele (no priority has been assigned). Within a few years the account was frequently reprinted, indeed Tiele identifies as many as 38 early editions of the Schouten narrative printed in the Netherlands alone (Latin, Spanish and English editions appeared soon afterwards). Another French-language edition was printed in Paris later in the same year.
