Usque, Abraham ben Salomon (ed. & translation by)
Amsterdam: Dauid Abenatar Mello / David Abenatar Melo (Fernão Alvares Melo), 5377. Hardcover. von- to fine. 16mo. 327pp. [1]. Handsomely rebound in modern dark brown leather boards with blind stamped tooling on the covers and spine. Gilt lettering over tan leather labels on the spine. Title page with decorative woodblock borders and motifs. This is the 1617 Spanish-language edition of the complete Jewish High Holiday prayer book (Machzor) based on the original Spanish translation by Abraham Usque, (originally printed in Ferarra, Italy in 1553). This publication contains the Selichot prayers (daily penitential prayers leading up to the high holidays) added to the content of the original edition. This following two Amsterdam printings of the Machzor from 1584, and an edition from 1604, this extremely scarce edition is known to be both the first Jewish prayer book to bare the name of "Amsterdam" on the title page, and the first to contain any Hebrew lettering at all.* Published "A. Primero de siuan, de 5377" (1st of Sivan 5377/ June 4th 1617). This edition of the Machzor was printed by David Abenatar Melo (Fernão Alvares Melo, 1569 - 1632) for the Bet Jakob synagogue*, part of the then sizable Sephardic Jewish community in Amsterdam. A significant portion of the community would have been ex-Marranos (Jews, who had outwardly converted to Catholicism during the inquisition in Spain, who then immigrated and were able to reestablished their Jewish identity), and thus were unable to read Hebrew, hence the text's publication in Spanish. The text starts with … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hoefnagel worked on the Civitates his whole life and may have acted as an agent for the project, by commissioning views from other artists. He also completed more than 60 illustrations himself. He enlivened the finished engravings with a Mannerist sense of fantasy and wit by using dramatic perspectives and ornamental cartouches. Due to the topographical accuracy he heralded the realist trend in 17th-century Netherlandish landscape art. Hooper," and later from the library of Lord Malmesbury with his note of acquisition on the front free endpaper dated 1796, and likely bound for him; he may have been the one to decide to remove the Spanish dictionary which was issued at the end of this work (old STC 17949; and subsequently deleted from the new STC as a separate work). Twentieth-century bookplate of the Johnsonian, Lindsay Fleming. The preferred first edition, which included two languages, Welsh and Portuguese, dropped from all later editions. SCHENCKEL, Lambert [and Johannes PAEPP].
VD17 14:631160D (2 copies); Yates, Art of memory, p. 301. Very rare third edition of Johannes Paepp's detailed commentary on Schenkel's Ars memoria, first published in 1617 as Schenckelius detectus, seu memoria artificialis hactenus occultata. The Dutch humanist Lambert Schenkel (1547-1625) was a great master of the art of memory and his teachings were so efficient that he was once accused of heresy by the Catholic Church. "Schenkel had a disciple and imitator, one Johannes Paepp. The works on memory of this Paepp are deserving of rather careful attention because he plays a role which may be vulgarly described as letting the cat out of the bag. He, as he describes it, 'detects Schenkel' or reveals the secret of the occult memory hidden in Schenkel's books. This purpose is stated in the title of his first book .... And he continued the good work of 'detecting Schenkel' in two subsequent publications" (Yates). While the present third edition names "Arnoldi Backhusy" on the title-page, he appears to have done nothing except add the dedication to the physician Johannes Meiboom: the main text largely matches the second edition. With a 1659 owner's inscription and a library stamp. A very good copy, with the fore-edge margin of the title-page folded inward and a minor water stain throughout in the lower margin. Binding very good as well.

Nuremberg: Abr. Wagenman, 1617. First edition thus. Engraved title printed in red and black, and 159 engraved plates of medallic devices by Johannes Sibmacher inset to text throughout, engraved head and tail pieces. [8], 540, [44] pp. 8vo. Hoe copy. Described as "Editio II," this is actually an enlarged edition of a work original published in 1597, documenting prize medals made for students of the Altdorf academy in Nuremberg. "The most remarkable example of [emblems and numismatics coming together] is the collection of prize medals from the Altdorf academy .... These medals were not only given to talented pupils as a reward for their study achievements, but also served as an instrument in teaching rhetorical skills. Each year several pupils were selected to deliver an oration interpreting the image depicted on the obverse of the medal. The images of the medals and the texts of the orations were published ... in two books as Emblemata anniversaria (Nuremberg, 1597 and 1617). The illustrations were made by Johannes Sibmacher ..." (Visser, Joannes Sambucus and the Learned Image, p. 45). Provenance: Robert Hoe (morocco bookplate). Tan calf, spine elaborately gilt, a.e.g., marbled endpapers. Minor rubbing to binding, fine.

Numerosi diagrammi incisi lungo il volume. PRIMA RARA EDIZIONE. Cfr. DSB, "In 1617 Baranzano published his most important work, Uranoscopia seu De coelo, in which he defended the Copernican system. This book was not well received by the Church, however, and Baranzano was called to Milan by the archbishop to make corrections. It is of some interest that he took with him on this occasion a letter written by his good friend Francis de Sales, testifying to his merits. Baranzano was indeed capable of progressive thought but was nevert … [Click Below for Full Description]

CHANLER, GEORGIUS
Amsterdam, Nicolaes Biestkens, 1617. Old vellum, rebacked using the old spine. (10), 324 p. Richly illustrated with depictions of coins. 1st edition. Binding soiled and a bit creased. Large engraved 17th century bookplate. Free endpapers renewed. Title remargined. Many corners and one inner margin restored with Japanese paper. Some soiling and a little waterstaining. "New Emperor Chronicle or History Book of All Roman Emperors, Eastern and Western". In 17th century Dutch, this is the longest book title we have! The main attraction of this book is the depiction of numerous ancient coins and medals, although the descriptions of the emperors in prose and poetry is nice, too, if you can read the language. With a large attractive 17th century bookplate: two leopards holding a coat of arms with a winged dragon. Under this, a dragon with heads on both ends, each devouring a leopard. Unfortunately we don't know the name of the owner. [Attributes: First Edition]

SPENSER, Edmund
1617 Edmund Spenser Shepheards Calendar Elizabethan Poetry Queen Elizabeth “He that strives to touch the stars oft stumbles at the straw.” Edmund Spenser, The Shepherd’s Calendar Edmund Spenser is one of the most well-known 16th-century English poets. While he is most known for ‘The Faerie Queene,’ his first major poetic work was ‘The Shepheardes Calendar.’ Enamored by the works of Virgil, Spenser began working a series of pastoral poems modeling Virgil’s ‘Eclogues’. He discusses abuses in the church, praises for Queen Elizabeth, and descriptions of the rustic life of shepherds. However, the most important aspect of this work is that it was played a critical role in the naturalization of the English language and literary techniques. (Gay, Bibl. SNEL [SNELLIUS or SNEL VAN ROYEN], Willebrord.
George Abrahamsz van Maarssen for Jodocus Colster, Leiden, 1617. First edition of Snel?s most important work. This was ?the foundation of modern geodesy? (Galileo Project) and of great significance in the history of navigation. ?With the development of their oceanic commerce, the Dutch became very interested in the most accurate possible determination of the length of a degree of longitude. A professor of mathematics at the University of Leiden, Snel undertook the task using the method of triangulation first proposed by Gemma Frisius in 1533 but developed by Snel to such an extent that he may rightfully be called one of its founders. He measured the distance between Alkmaar and Bergen-op-Zoom, which lay approximately on the same meridian, and also the distance between the parallels of Alkmaar and Leiden, and from the mean of these two measurements calculated the length of a degree to be 352,347 feet, a more accurate reckoning than any previous attempt. Snel also solved the so-called recession problem for three points, a problem often named after him. The title of his book pays tribute to the Greek mathematician Eratosthenes, who was famous for his measurement of the circumference of the earth? (Norman). ?His figure [for the length of a degree] showed the great error in the popular figure of 300,000 feet, which up to then was used by navigators. One navigator, at all events, was quick to see the advantage of using the lately calculated and more accurate figure, and used it upon his voyage to discover the North West Passage, in 1633. This was Captain Thomas James, after whom … [Click Below for Full Description]

In 1614, the Tokugawa Shogun, Ieyasu expelled Christian missionaries from Japan, in an attempt to stop Christian evangelist efforts started in 1549. Foreigners were banished and Kirishitans (Japanese Christians) were persecuted from religious practice or made to flee to Macau or the Philippines. Before the start of the persecution and martyrdom of Christians by Hideyoshi (Ieyasu's predecessor), Japan had the largest Christian population not ruled by a European country. Pineyro was believed to be in Japan during this period and wrote first-hand about the deterioration of Japanese relations and ultimate destruction of most of the Christian community.
