Flacius Illyricus, Matthias
Basileae: Per Sebastianum Henripetri, 1617. Folio. Editio ultima. Latin text. 2 volumes in 1. with two title pages, the second title page is from the printer Sebastian Henric Petri 1546-1627. Both volumes have extensive indexes including separate Scripture references. Matthias Flacius Illyricus (1520-1573) was born in Bosnia and after his studies in Venice transferred to Wittenberg where he studied both Greek and Hebrew where Luther made him Professor of Hebrew. It was his deep understanding of the Old Testament where he developed a system of hermeneutics that anticipated Lutheran scholarship in the 16th through the 18th Century. In short, he felt the knowledge of the text was essential and prior to dogmatics. He was one of the great intellects of the German Reformation and while unifying serious Lutheran scholarship he paved the way toward the Formula of Concord (1577). Although he emphasized the attention to scholarship, he felt the ultimate principle was to facilitate a clear understanding of Scripture to the layman. Bound in original vellum fully decorated in blind, raised bands, title to one compartment in brown ink, small tear to vellum near head corners quite worn, two spots of chipping to board edges, first few leaves with edges chipped., some toning or foxing to leaves. A very good copy.

Artist: Ptolemy/Giovanni Magini Claudius ca ; date: ca1617 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 13 x 16,5; - description: Map shows total Arabia, partly the red sea and the Persian Gulf.; - vita of the artist: Giovanni Antonio Magini was an italian Astronomer and Mathematician. In 1592 he issued "De Planis Triangulis" by describing the Quadrant. Magini also maufactured an atlas of Italy which has been issued by his son in 1620. The moon craterMagnius was named after Magini. Claudius Ptolemy ( arround 100- 160 a.C.) Geographia, gives a list of geographic coordinates of spherical longitude and latitude of almost ten thousand point locations on the earth surface, as they were known at his times. The list is organized in Tabulae which cor- respond to specific regions of the three known continents at that time, Africa, Asia and Europe. Research on Ptolemy?s Geographia has started at the University of Thessaloniki, Greece, in the eighties, focused mainly, but not exclusively, on data re- lated to territories which are now under the sovereignty of the modern Greek state. The World of Ptolemy is classified in Regions, since each Chapter is referred to one of them, giving by this way the concept of Atlas as it is understood today.

; 58pp. (4) 307pp., 3 parties reliées en un volume. - First edition of the publication of Johannes Van Meurs, printed in Greek and Latin. It contains in particular the De administrando imperio which despite a general title at the date of 1617, wears the colophon date of printing of 1611. This text, known thanks to manuscripts, had never been printed before. Contemporary binding in full vellum red speckled lapel, smooth back with a title pen, all slices flecked with red. Several red underlines and marginal handwritten annotations of the time. In line with the great works of princely education, Constantine dedicated this book to his son Roman II. Constantin also evokes in this work the famous Greek fire, enjoining Romain II to never reveal the secrets carefully guarded of its manufacture. This universal history "concentrated on such non-political, non-chronological topics as finance, population, Roman architecture, and statuary." (Tournoy p.236). "Based primarily on the writings of classical Greek and Roman authors, it surveyed the libraries of antiquity by describing their locations, buildings, storage methods, and, to a small extent, their contents. SANCHEZ (Thomas)
Anvers, Martini Nutii & Ioannem Meursium, MDCXVII, 1617. [Click Below for Full Description]

KEPLER, Johannes.
Linz: Johannes Plank, [1617-1619]. First edition. Hardcover.
First edition, very rare and with an exceptional royal provenance, of Kepler's Ephemerides for the years 1617-1620. These were the first tables of astronomical data calculated by Kepler on the basis of the new celestial mechanics he had published in Astronomia nova (1609), and also the first calculated using logarithms, preceding by a decade the Tabulae Rudolphinae (1627). The accuracy and reliability of Kepler's ephemerides greatly surpassed those of other ephemerides of the time; as a result, the Copernican doctrine gained in esteem, and it was more and more accepted that it was not just a new and useful mathematical hypothesis, but a reflection of reality. In his important introductions to the tables, Kepler discusses sunspots (including his claim to have been the first of the century to observe them), his lunar theory, the application of logarithms (the ephemeris of 1620 is dedicated to their inventor, Napier), the camera obscura (which for Kepler was of great importance to astronomy), the final chapter in Kepler's relations with the friend-turned-critic David Fabricius, and many other topics of the greatest interest in the history of science. "Already in 1609, at the time his Astronomia nova appeared, Kepler had formulated the plan of publishing ephemerides giving daily positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets for eighty years, beginning in 1582 with Tycho's first systematic observations of the planets; the calculated positions would be derived from Tycho's obse … [Click Below for Full Description]
