BERNARD, RICHARD
London, Felix Kyngston, 1617. (engraved titlepage, 58) 351 p. Contemporary Leather, 4° (with a new spine underneath the old one. John Bernard 1568-1641 was a Puritan pastor and writer who produced mostly practical works. His most influential work was The Faithfull Shepheard and his practice (1607 and 1621), a handbook for ministers. He also produced several catechisms and a commentary on Revelation. His most popular work The Isle of Man (1627) reached its sixteenth edition in 1683 and was reprinted in the 19th Century. His Faithfull Shepheard rivalled Baxter’s Reformed Pastor and his Isle of Man may have inspired Bunyan’s Holy War. Bernard also wrote against separatism on one hand and prelatic imposition of ceremonies and popery on the other.) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Bossche, Johannes Baptista van den.
[No place], 1617. 8vo. Dutch manuscript on paper. 87 ff., last blank pasted to back cover (collation: A-L8). Interesting devotional manuscript in Dutch containing extensive instructions and rules for behaving, praying and meditating, and living a good religious life in a monastery from hour to hour. The booklet also gives the texts prayers and meditations to perform during the day. It is a sort of "Diurnale" (a shortened Breviary), written by the prior of a monastery ("het Syon"), for his brothers. - Strangely enough the text seems to have been written by a Dutchman from the northern Netherlands where all the monasteries were demolished during the beginning of the Eighty Year's War, and where the Roman-Catholic faith was tolerated at best. "Het Syon" is an often used name for a monastery, for example one near Beverwijck, or near Delft, but, again, these cloisters were no longer in existence. Possibly, Johannes Baptista van den Bossche was a refugee from the north and active in the Southers Netherlands. The manuscript is written in a clear, sophisticated, and almost calligraphical handwriting (by Johannes van den Bossche himself?) in two scripts: italic and a script reminding the civilité type. - Very well preserved.

[Click Below for Full Description]

Rossi, Logic and the Art of Memory, p.92: «Between 1617 and 1619 (at the same time as the young Descartes began to express his interest in Lullism and the arts of memory) the works by Johannes Paepp were published in Lyons. One of these works, the Schenkelius detectus seu memoria artificialis hactenus occultata was a detailed commentary on Schenckel?s Ars memoriae, a work which Descartes knew well. In the Artificiosae memoriae fundamenta and the Introductio facilis in praxim artificiosae memoriae, Paepp set out to expound the Aristotelian, Ciceronian and Thomist doctrines on memory, but he had also patently been influenced by the Lullist tradition, and was familiar with its most significant exponents, from Bruno to Alsted. Following in the footsteps of Alsted, he fiercely criticized the denigrators of the art, and defended the idea of the interdependence of logic and mnemotechnics: while logic was necessary for some of the arts and disciplin … [Click Below for Full Description]

SNELLIUS, WILLEBRORD (SNELL; SNELL van ROYEN). - [MEASURING THE EARTH - FOUNDING THE MODERN ART OF MAPMAKING]
Leiden, Iodocus à Colster, 1617. 4to. Completely uncut, in the original interim boards, rebacked in matching paper and with leather cords. A bit of soiling to especially front board. Internally a nice, clean, fresh, and unrestored copy. (12), 263, (1) pp. Illustrated. ¶ Very rare first edition of Snell's seminal magnum opus, in which he founded the modern systematic use of triangulation, thus also founding the modern art of map-making. It is due to his development of triangulation presented in the present work - a method that was used for accurate large-scale land surveying until the rise of global navigation satellite systems in the 1980'ies - that Snell "may rightfully be called the father of triangulation". (D.S.B.). "Despite Cassini's tables for accurately predicting the motions of Jupiter's moons, which allowed very accurate time measurements to be made, the riddle of longitude still needed another vital piece of information. The size and form of the earth were still uncertain: only one scientific experiment had been conducted to measure its circumference, by Willebrord Snell (1580-1626), in the early years of the seventeenth century.Snellius, as he is better known, was the son of a wealthy professor of mathematics at the University of Leiden in Holland, where young Snell himself studied law. But it was mathematics that intrigued him, and through his studies, he made considerable contributions to science. He is probably best remembered for the optical law of incidence and refraction named for him [which remained unpublished]. However, the most important of his works p … [Click Below for Full Description]

RICCI, Matteo (1552-1610); and Nicolas TRIGAULT (1577-1628)
Lille: Pierre de Rache, 1617. Small 4to. (7 5/8 x 5 3/4 inches). Title printed in red and black. [12], 559, [5]pp. Contemporary vellum, spine titled in manuscript, expertly recased (small repair at head of spine) Provenance: Franciscan Monastery at Weert (small inked stamp on title) Second edition in French of the most important work on China published in the first half of the 17th century. "In 1615, the French Jesuit missionary Nicolas Trigault published De Christiana Expeditione apud Sinas Suscepta ab Societae Jesu ... based on the reports and papers of Mateo Ricci, the Italian who carried the Jesuit mission in China beyond the Portuguese trading colony at Macau to the mainland. Ricci lived and worked in Canton and Nanjing, among other places, and died in Beijing in 1610. This chronicle about the Western mission in China from 1583-1611 also provided a systematic portrait of contemporary Chinese society as perceived by Ricci, who was fluent in Chinese and exhibited both a sympathetic interest in Chinese culture and an erudite perspective on the Jesuits' accomplishments. De Christiana Expeditione was among the most important and widely read books on China published during the seventeenth century. French, German, Spanish and Italian translations quickly appeared, but not English" ( China on Paper , p. 10). The first French edition was published in Lyon in 1616, translated by D. F. de Riquebourg-Trigault (a nephew of Nicholas Trigault) with the present second edition following. All early editions are rare. The work "became the most influential description of C … [Click Below for Full Description]

Venice, Nicolo Misserini, 1617.. 4to. (10) leaves, 1055 p., (4) leaves, 4 full-page engravings (206, 240, 588, 658). Title-page with two very old stamps and one from the 20th century. Light marginal waterstaining to the first quarter of the book. 18th century Italian half calf, spine richly gilt.Rare like all early editions of Jacopone. This is the the third type of early Jacopone editions; the first beeing the Bonaccorsi edition published Florence 1490 - from which the 1588 and 1615 are derived-, the second the 1495 Brescia edition - from which the editions of 1514 and 1556 are derived. The editor of our edition, Francesco Tresatti, has added his own copiously commentaries to each poem, and has enlarged the corpus of the Laude to 211, thus publishing more then 120 poems not of Jacopone's origin but belonging to what is called the Jacoponian school - most of these poems printed here for the first time. His Faithfull Shepheard rivalled Baxter's Reformed Pastor and his Isle of Man may have inspired Bunyan's Holy War. Bernard also wrote against separatism on one hand and prelatic imposition of ceremonies and popery on the other.).
