Otto MELANDER
New edition, rare, after the original was published in 1603 by Dionysius Melander and increased significantly by his son Otto Melander. Brand of printer in the title page. Half black chagrin XIX ca 1850. spine tooled raised wheels on the nerves and nets. Date tail. Yellowed title page. Collection of anecdotes and pleasant stories with 1,749 entries; you will meet many famous people. This type of collection, from causing serious compilations on maxims and sentences from the ancients, had a great vogue in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century, and some are downright raunchy Gallic, and other more serious history such as Melander, but always oriented fun and entertainment of the reader. ISOCRATES
Rome: Iacobus Mascardus, 1617. This small volume contains three of the great rhetorician's orations in parallel Greek and Latin text, in a lavishly decorated binding that has connections to the papacy or to an important Italian family that enjoyed papal favor. The symbol at the center of the boards here, showing the crossed keys and umbraculum, suggests that this might be a "sede vacante" binding: such an insignia was used by the Holy See when there was no sitting pope ("sede vacante" meaning "the seat being empty"). This symbol could also indicate possession by a family that had received a special grant from the pope to use the crossed keys and umbraculum. Among those so honored would have been the great lords who were invested with papal fiefs (for example, the Este, Farnese, and Montefeltro families). The absence of a coat of arms here might suggest that the present binding was not done for one of the great ducal houses, but rather for some other distinguished family. Whoever owned it--and the "S R" initials on the covers are probably those of the original owner--the decoration of our volume is certainly ornate enough to qualify it for distinguished shelves. The celebrated Attic orator and rhetorician Isocrates (436-338 B.C.) presided over a school of rhetoric in Athens for many decades. A shy man, he seldom spoke in public, but aired his political views in published speeches. He deplored the quarrelsomeness of the Greeks, and appealed to Philip of Macedon to lead them in a conquest of the Persian Empire, an undertaking realized by Philip's son Alexander. The first orat … [Click Below for Full Description]

An early history of the castle, following its destruction in 1831, this work traces the history to before its original construction by William the Conqueror in 1068, and explains its significance in social and military history. A full chapter is devoted to an architectural description, and an appendix of over 100 pages covers the entirety of the trial of the rioters, known as the Duke of Newcastle v. the Hundred of Broxtowe. (Judges 16:30) The motto reads: Nostra Fortitudo Nomen Domini. This convolute lacks, according to VD17, the 7 page Q. Aurelii Symmachi Vita of Jacques Godefroy. Ebert remarks that this short vita is usually lacking. The titlepage of the last volume bears erroneously the year 1517) (Condition: Binding scuffed, and worn at the extremities. Corners bumped. Both pastdowns are detached: the binder used a manuscript music sheet for the endpapers. The music and the accompanying text, in English, seem liturgic) (Note: The Roman nobleman Quintus Aurelius Symmachus, ca. 340 - ca. 402 AD, was a prominent civil servant, and became the most famous and admired orator of his day. Ptolemy/Giovanni Magini Claudius
Artist: Ptolemy/Giovanni Magini Claudius ; date: 1617 - - technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; condition: Very good; size (in cm): 13 x 16,5 - description: Map shows Tartarie, Tibet and partly India - vita of the artist: Giovanni Antonio Magini was an italian Astronomer and Mathematician. In 1592 he issued "De Planis Triangulis" by describing the Quadrant. Magini also maufactured an atlas of Italy which has been issued by his son in 1620. The moon craterMagnius was named after Magini. Claudius Ptolemy ( arround 100- 160 a.C.) Geographia, gives a list of geographic coordinates of spherical longitude and latitude of almost ten thousand point locations on the earth surface, as they were known at his times. The list is organized in Tabulae which cor- respond to specific regions of the three known continents at that time, Africa, Asia and Europe. Research on Ptolemy?s Geographia has started at the University of Thessaloniki, Greece, in the eighties, focused mainly, but not exclusively, on data re- lated to territories which are now under the sovereignty of the modern Greek state. The World of Ptolemy is classified in Regions, since each Chapter is referred to one of them, giving by this way the concept of Atlas as it is understood today.

Prijs: ?1.650,-.
